Too strapped for cash to buy it now, but it's at the top of my list.

Agreement with all. Last broadacst is a great album. 'Sulphur man' best track, closely followed by 'Fridays Dust' and 'M62 Song'.

Am I the only person who finds a lot of the songs could have done with some cutting down? I like the intro track, but opening and closing almost every song with the same type of thing started to grate on me by the 4th time through. Some of it's ok, but I was reduced to wishing for a fast forward button a few times.

Ignoring that, it is a really nice album. I've been listening to it on my morning commute, and it's great for my usual pre-coffee stupor bus ride. It will be interesting to see how it sounds when I'm a little more awake.

four years pass...
too much fidgeting with noises and sounds that aren't instruments.

a wholly unsatisfying follow-up to a wonderful debut. i'll only return to exactly three tracks on this, and i'll be skipping tracks like crazy in spite of the fact that it was obviously designed to be played all the way through.

mind you, they played a dreadful, wooden, goofy show in support of this record, and perhaps that's why i resent it so.

Just been listening to "Black & White Town", which they were playing in the place where I have lunch. It still sounds great.

So ILM never gave any love to "There Goes the Fear"? WHY NOT?!??!!?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

i turned up a couple of months too late to do that. i loved them at that point - this has faded somewhat since and i prefer 'Lost Souls' (and 'Lost Sides') to subsequent stuff but never mind.

if you like Doves check out The Isles (esp. 'Flying Under Cheap Kites' and 'Summer Loans') - very pleasant jangly business in a similar style.

- xpost- Maybe because it goes on for a while -
but this album meant so much to me when it was released - I'd stay in all day and have "Pounding" and "Sulphur Man" on loop. Maybe it was the period I was going through but this is so much better than its predecessor and its dull followup.

danzig (danzig), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

I tried to make a banging euphoric house track using the 'Sulphur Man' intro but it never came together alas.

The production could have done with less feedback and generally less exaggerated amps. That being said, Doves tend to make great albums.

the isles album is decent. better than most of this record (and much more so than the desperately dull third doves record).

there goes the fear is sweet, listened to it on the weekend for the first time in years. can't really see the house of love comparisons i sometimes hear about it
