I'm trying to remember the name of the genre of music that is chinese communist classical music. like the orchestrated (heavy on the strings) classical stuff always accompanying the red-army uniform clothed ballet. "red army symphonies" maybe?

Also does anyone know of any famous pieces in this genre or something to look for?

that kind of sentimental-sounding mix of lite-classical and traditional chinese? I think it's called guoyue, 'national music'. My mum has a few flexis of it but I've no idea whether they're well-known songs or just whatever she picked up when she was in the PRC.

I'm thinking of the sort of bombastic classical music that is heavy on energy (and timpani). I studied the stuff briefly in a course of chinese musics (we focused mainly on opera and funeral music) and remembered really liking it. was just reminded of it all by this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1616595115808312907&hl=en
I'm talking about that sort of music.

Chinese Opera, but still haven't got a record of anything. My last brush with Chinese opera ws footage of it inserted in a documentary about table tennis!

Revolutionary Opera was the term. There were like eight of them plus two ballets and one piece of concert music - I think it was called "Yellow River Concerto." Those were the only artworks allowed during the Cultural Revolution.

Cool. Thanks for the help. It seems there were more than just the 8, but they are the most famous. Once I was able to pinpoint the stuff, a coworker from China told me he has some of it on CD. sweet.
