Futuristic soul

What does this phrase mean to you musically, if anything at all?

My mom worked at home and so I grew up in the mid-to-late 80s along with whatever she was listening to on the radio ... I remember getting really excited when Cameo's "Word Up" came out because it sounded unlike anything I'd heard before. Really enjoyed Timex Social Club's "Rumors" as well, although I've since soured on Club Nouveau's cover of "Lean On Me," which I loved as a kid.

So I guess that was my first taste of a different kind of soul than the Motown my mom listened to -- black dudes who got into synths. I caught occasional snatches of other stuff on Florida radio, like "Planet Rock" or Miami bass ... EU's "Doing Da Butt" was a minor Orlando hit when I was in middle school (this guy Scott would hum that along with the keyboard vamp to Salt 'n' Pepa's "Push It" to make the girls uncomfortable). It was yeeears before I moved to D.C. and made the EU/d.c. go-go connection.

But these days there's this weird futuristic funk/soul thing going on amongst mostly white guys. I'm making, for lack of a better word, a 'cyber-soul' mixtape ... I guess I never entirely worked trip-hop out of my system. So I've for sure got Super_Collider's awesome "Gravity Rearrangin'" w/Matthew Herbert on keyboards (Raw Digits is top 5 of the 2000s for me), along with Esthero's "Indigo Boy," Dani Siciliano, Royksopp, Luke Sutherland's Bows ...

... Goldfrapp, Circlesquare, Junior Boys, Third Eye Foundation's "When I Dance," Post-Industrial Boys w/Tusia Beridze, and some instrumentals: Andrew Pekler, Forss, Colleen. I guess I'm aiming for something in a grey area between soul/noir/jazzy atmosphere.

I love this kind of sound, but I don't like when it gets too 'lite' a la Cafe del Mar compilations or whatever. So if anybody has any suggestions for filling in the edges around this mix ...

How funny, I just noticed the electro r&b/1984-86 thread, and only after making this. Gurr. Sorry if it's a bit of a cross-post, but I guess I'm looking for more modern sounds anyway.

Georgia Anne Muldrow, Sa-Ra and that whole scene. And also a lot of stuff on the label UIQUITY.
