Christina Aguilera - "Candyman"

Touched on a bit over on the teenpop thread and possibly elsewhere, but those swamps be difficult to penetrate and I think this is good enough to merit a thread of its own. The short version is, as [Removed Illegal Link] puts it, "It's Christina Aguilera doing the Andrews Sisters, for heavens sake." Speaking as somebody who enjoys both, I'm a little disappointed that the imitation isn't a little bit better - there's little of the rhythmic quick-stepping that makes the best Andrews Sisters cuts so hooky, but on the other hand, the thing is convincingly naughty, and on that level seems to embody the pinup, soldier's tour thing way better than the Sisters ever could. Thoughts?

it's a pretty good pop song but you're right, there's...something a tiny bit disappointing about it, something missing. possibly a big chord change. i'm not keen on the sample either.

on the other hand it's enjoyable enough and the video is fabulous - xtina looks like she's having so much fun these days.

It's good, but it's a bit cheesy. The thing about Christina is that she has no concept of the word "subtlety." I see what she was trying to do, but instead of homage it sort of comes off as parody. There are so many songs from b2b I would've liked to be singles insteas... "Still Dirrty," "Makes Me Wanna Pray,"etc.

'mercy on me'! and yeah, 'makes me wanna pray'. they make me wonder about xtina's religious background, which as far as i know she's never mentioned as having a profound/traumatic impact on her.

This is one of those songs that makes me hope aliens come and destroy Earth to stop the contagion from possibly spreading to other planets.

otm. It's the one thing that's keeping me from totally loving Christina. It's sad cause there are moments when she can be truly affecting, but it's totally ruined from being just too much over-the-top. It's ok though, I think she's slowly learning. I really like how happy she seems now and still find it kinda sweet that she married that dorky record exec.

I hate 'Candyman' though. 'Makes Me Wanna Pray' would make a far better single.

I 've heard "Boogie woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" in the Andrews Sisters version and the '70s version(s), and this adds nothing to the genre.

"Save Me From Myself" is probably xtina's subtlest moment and is quite lovely. But who are we kidding here, she's great because she's the very opposite of subtlety - that grammy james brown tribute was unbelievably awesome.

As for "Candyman" - I love the aesthetic but the song is quite horribly gimmicky. Much prefer "Still Dirrty" and "Slow Down Baby" to be singles.

Yeah, that James Brown tribute was incredible. Even that sour note in the middle (I'm still not sure if that was intentional or if her voice went out...)

This is lame. She may be a better singer than Madonna, but it's not half as smutty or witty as "Hanky Panky."
