Tell me more about my thinly veiled racist appreciation of music, o maestro; I'm curious. While you're at it, I'm even more interested in my motivations; feel free to go ahead and fill those in too.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 13 May 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

Or is a visceral and immediately joyful reaction to music somehow threatening to your hyper-jaded u-ain't-real-enough music-crit sensibilities? Cuz I react the same way to any of about a zillion other musicians if you took the time to look around the board.
But hey, if you wanna go play in the briar patch, let's have at it.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 13 May 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

I will cop to a special love for batshit crazy musicians, but really dude, the 'cooning' shit is outta line.

jergïns, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

The record's good, uneven, backloaded with ballads. Real Talk is real wtf, but man does he have an ear for dialogue. Rock Star (the one with Kid Rock) actually isn't that bad until the end. Freaky In The Club, Leave Your Name, and Double Up are the picks after a few listens.

jergïns, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

R Kelly national anthem

daria-g, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

J0hn D., Wednesday, 23 May 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

i love r, i just actually listen to dudes music instead of jizzing myself over convincing myself hes schizophrenic cuz of wacky lyrics & costumes

and what, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

with this album the big r has actually jumped not just a shark, but some sort evil giant squid

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard the new one but I tend to prefer his ballads - "U Saved Me" is his best work of the past few years imo but I think he knows he's gonna sell more records to people who like him better as a clown now and really you can't blame the dude, you gotta either please your audience or do without their $$$

J0hn D., Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

"17 Sex Planet"

surely this kind of represents an aesthetic dead end for the r

uh, sex solar system? sex galaxy? sex universe?

WE LOVE BALLADS

r kelly - you saved me

just debuted on the soul train awards to an astonished crowd - classic inspirational r and his most affecting lyrics in what seems like a long time, a precise, incredible reminisce of every time hes been saved by god (prayin to the lord for a job, almost dying in a car crash, shot four times sellin on the corner and, beautifully, when his moms prayed to put his cancer in remission, crying 'mama...' over the end of each line) sung on a radiant kci & jojo groove : ) : ) : )

and what, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

jump the shark, really, jess? I thought TP-3: Reloaded was a kind of worthless album but my hopes are kinda high for this, much better outside producers than Scott Storch and I love "Same Girl" and "I'm A Flirt."

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

originally this new record was supposed to be 9 slow jams and titled making babies — 9 songs for the 9 months of pregnancy. but when 'go getta' took off, he abruptly shifted course. this is straight from the mouth of r. himself. i kind of wish he had stuck with the original plan.

i also remember a Vibe story from several years ago in which the reporter went to Casa de Kells and came across a stack of CD-Rs labeled "Africa," "India," etc etc. She asked him about these and he played some for her — they were Kells songs written in the styles indigenous to each of those continents.

smash your phonograph in half, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

"i'm a flirt" and "same girl" are kinda red herrings. 3/4ths of the beats are okay-to-great, but most of his lyrics on this one are out-and-out bonkers, like he had decided to take all the little random bonkers bits from old songs (like the three bears/porridge bit from uhhh "a woman's threat"? i can't remember) and just string them together.

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

i also can and can't believe that he makes the "trip to uranus" pun on "sex planet." truly without shame.

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

like, naked in the garden of eden without shame.

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

<i>I am a mountain
I am a tall tree
oh, I am a swift wind
sweeping the country
I am a river
down in the valley
oh, I am a vision
and I can see clearly

if anybody asks you who I am,
stand up tall, look 'em in the face and say:

I'm that mountain peak up high
I'm that star up in the sky
hey, I made it
I'm the world's greatest
and I'm that little bit of hope
when your back's against the ropes
I can feel it
I'm the world's greatest</i>

I think Real Talk might be my favorite thing he's ever done, it's seriously intense.

Jena, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

Ok so I'm exagerrating a bit there, the 2 singles are still the best about this. And I'm surprised that Rise Up made it on the album, that was quick.

Jena, Thursday, 24 May 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

The I'm a Flirt dancehall mix with Lady Saw is fully enjoyable and ribbed.

<i>i love r, i just actually listen to dudes music instead of jizzing myself over convincing myself hes schizophrenic cuz of wacky lyrics & costumes</i>

Lyrics _are_ wacky; can't say I remember ever noticing what R's wearing one way or another.
Based on multiple interviews and his public persona, he's as eccentric as they come; 'schizophrenic' seems pretty unlikely, but 'batshit crazy' strikes me as close to the mark.
Congratulations on 'actually listening' to the music. Remind me again why you felt the need to start shit? Just bored that day?

Album's been my memorial day music (well, it and Yonder Mountain String Band) and it's v v v fun. 'Leave your name' is beautiful. Haven't gotten much farther than the execrable 'Rock Star' though; I just end up restarting the disc at that point... though I've been sneaking ahead to 'Best Friend' and really lovin' that one.
Strongo OTM on bazonker lyric congregation; 'The Zoo' is some next level shit.
