It just occurred to me today that I don't own ANY Elvis albums. I was in an Elvis mood too. I guess I coulda just watched him on Youtube. I don't know how this happened. I've owned various things over the years. greatest hits comps. sun comps. live radio stuff. what did i do with them??? maybe a hillbilly robbed me. it's a mystery. 20 gazillion records and no king! it ain't right. i'll get on it.

the Million Dollar Quartet

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

I had quite a few one time. Then I realized I never listened to them more than once. So I ripped them all to mp3. My favorite stuff remains the early seventies arrangements that essentially predicts later Nick Cave.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

early 70s Elvis is easily my favorite too. Get one "That's the Way it Was". totally amazing.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

(er that is That's The Way It Is)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

i've got the "Sunrise" comp of the Sun material and some other odds and sods. And while I think it's great and all, wow, it sure does sound tame next to, say, Howlin' Wolf, who was also on Sun at the time. Maybe that goes without saying...

tylerw, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

elvis at sun
from elvis in memphis
elv1s
2nd to none

abanana, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

A comp of early Sun hits on my ipod, from a copy-thefted CDR belonging to my GF. Can't see the need for anything else, 'cuz in the two years I've "owned" it, I've never listened to anything off it.

Pye Poudre, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

separate ways is pretty cool.
obv sun sessions and memphis

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

The two '56 albums, Sunrise, various live shows from this time, Elvis is Back!, the gospel albums, Memphis Anthology, Elvis country, Promised Land, Moody Blue, On Stage, various outtakes collections, the Million Dollar Quartet, Tomorrow Is a Long Time, Memories, the 50s/60s/70s boxes, Artist of the century. The post 2002 reissues (after 30 #1 Hits) can kiss my balls.

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

I've got that one album w/the Elvis-in-Vegas-style cover where he does gospel tunes with strings, just says "Elvis Presley" in lights on the cover.

Def need That's the Way It Is in my life.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

Never owned an Elvis album.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I've got the Artist of the Century on my (piece of shit) ipod.

m coleman, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

I've always been kinda surprised at how well-received That's the Way It Is is by old school Elvis fans. As a portrait of Elvis-in-decline it seems pretty brutal to me - he's clearly out of it most of the time, gives rambling speeches from the stage about how "totally insane" he is, lots of weird mimed guitar playing, karaoke dance moves, falling off his chair during rehearsals, cruelly slagging off the backup singers, grotesque audience-kissing sequence, etc. And that final shot, of him singing "I Can't Help Falling in Love" while bored dinner patrons mill around aimlessly and pick at their food is pure 100% grade A pathos. Yet this is all commonly described in reverent tones as Elvis in peak form! Kinda startling.

That being said I do genuinely love a lot of the music cuz I'm a sucker for overdone Spector-ized orchestral rock. Also "Polk Salad Annie" smokes.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

you're thinking of the tv special THAT'S THE WAY IT IS the LP of the same name is tasty Memphis stuff

m coleman, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

right, I'm referring to the film, sorry for any confusion.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

BUT HE KISSES EVERY WOMAN IN THE AUDITORIUM DURING "LOVE ME TENDER"!

I own Aloha From Hawaii and I have Moody Blue on vinyl somewhere (sadly, it's the blue vinyl, not the rare black vinyl.)

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

I only own one, actually no make that two.

Both on the HMV label, both fairly trashed examples. But iconic, nevertheless...

I still have yet to hear Having Fun With Elvis on Stage, and I would kill for a YSI.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

I got "Rock and Roll" the famous front sleeve, in a jumble sale for 50p, way back in the day.

But it had "Rock and roll vol 2" inside!

Anyway, five years later, I find a copy of "Rock and Roll No 2" on the RCA label, and guess what was inside? Yep, the missing first album.

Now, if anyone has the HMV sleeve for No 2, with the RCA album inside.....

I've got tons.

Anyone looking for NBC special soundtrack and outtakes might as well go for DVD.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

I had a tape of "Mess o' Blues", which was a compilation of blues-influenced stuff, and just great. Fell apart - really must replace it.

Apart from that, just Sun Sessions and a really crudely packaged Russian comp on Melodia.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

Mark, I'm surprised you didn't also have A Date With Elvis which back in the day was one of the only ways (along with For LP Fans Only) to get a hold of tracks from The Sun Sessions, as well as having "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care."

I still have yet to hear Having Fun With Elvis on Stage
The CD version of the similarly titled On Stage was recorded at the height of the late sixties comeback (in early 1970!) and features live versions of "Suspicious Minds," "In The Ghetto" and "Kentucky Rain" which were left off the LP version, as well as a killer version of "Polk Salad Annie."

The Sun Sessions
The Top Ten Hits

(both vinyl)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Elvis was a hero to some... But I personally never owned a single Elvis Presley album, CD, cassette or 8-track.

NYCNative, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

Also, where is the love for Elvis' Golden Records, Vol. 3 and "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame"?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

I have a twofer of Speedway and Clambake. Really fucking great, plus it has "Guitar Man" and "How Do You Lose What You Never Had" on it, the latter being one of Elvis' greatest moments. Then I have like 9 CDs of the Complete '50s/'60s masters. And then two LPs, Our Memories of Elvis from '79, some good later shit like "It's Midnight." And That's the Way It Is, '70, MGM live, "Director of Photography: Lucien Ballard" (who also worked with Peckinpah), EP in his sincerity phase and he's shown on back cover inside these little frames of film.

whisperineddhurt, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

I have:

Elvis' 50 Worldwide Gold Award Hits 4LP box on RCA (LPM-6401). It's in mono!

Then I also have Elvis' Golden Records on LP.

sleeve, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

Lucien Ballard worked on lots of good Westerns, was part Cherokee and was married to Merle Oberon. But on this last point- who wasn't?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

James, I have Golden Records Volume 3 on vinyl. "His Latest Flame" = ex-gf's fave Elvis tune. We're still friends, fortunately, so the song hasn't been ruined.

I did have "the sun sessions" double but sold it.

I do have the "Elvis Golden Greats" arcade double, pretty damn good condition, sides 1 and 2 are OK.

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)

If anyone could locate the Elvis POX thread -- I can't -- that would be cool.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

Mark, I'm surprised you didn't also have A Date With Elvis which back in the day was one of the only ways (along with For LP Fans Only) to get a hold of tracks from The Sun Sessions, as well as having "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care."

I got a vinyl reissue of The Sun Sessions around 1978 when I worked in record store, probably have the expanded version from ten years later too.

most played of my Elvis albums would be the double-record expanded From Elvis In Memphis retitled The Memphis Album IIRC part of a big death-anniversary reissue program in 1987 or the 70s Original Masters box set, esp the first two discs covering all his 70s singles. controversially I think the 1968 comeback thru "Burning Love" period is Elvis' peak >>>>>>>>>> over the Sun Sessions or anything else, really.

my favorite regular-issue Elvis album is Elvis Country. his definition of country music ranges from Willie Nelson to Jerry Lee Lewis and Anne Murray's "Snowbird" !! It's also a concept album if you please, songs interspersed with snippets of a weird old gospel tune "I was born about 10,000 years ago..."

Elvis Greatest Shit is an infamous boot collecting his "worst" performances. a must-hear for true fans.

Girl Happy is my favorite of the movie albums, if only for the immortal "Do The Clam."

m coleman, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

"1" and "2".

And that is sufficient.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

Would have thought he would have been right up your street, what with his remarks about coloured folks only being good for shining his shoes and writing his records.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

Curiously I own copies of both the Elvis' Greatest Shit double bootleg and Having Fun With Elvis On Stage.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

That "shit" album is actually pretty alright!

Search- "Poison Ivy League" - Class war in action!

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

The Christmas Album is one of the best xmas albums I've heard. His blubbing is so over-the-top on White Christmas and Silent Night, you really gotta hear it. Happy festive blubbing. I play it all year round.

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

Sun Sessions CD
Two-disc Top Ten Hits collection, issued in the 80s sometime.
A random comp called "Rocker"
A rather lame Christmas LP

Mark Rich@rdson, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

controversially I think the 1968 comeback thru "Burning Love" period is Elvis' peak
I don't know how controversial this opinion is these days, I think I know a few people who subscribe to it.

I've heard good things about that 70s box- it's got a version of "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water," right?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

Can't imagine Muddy Waters was too pleased about that.

The best single Elvis album is Tiger Man which is the R&R section of the '68 comeback special in full and unedited.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

I knew somebody was going to make that Muddy Waters joke, thank god it was a master wit like Marcello.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

most-played of my elvis albums, i think:

the memphis record (or is it the memphis album) -- 2-LP set
reconsider baby

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Reconsider Baby RULES.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

The Sun Sessions CD
Elvis Presley (first RCA album)
Elvis (second RCA album)
From Elvis In Memphis
Tiger Man
and a 2CD bootleg set from the Memphis sessions called Finding My Way Home

Only the first four are actually in my iPod, though.

unperson, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I ordered the 70s box set on Wednesday and it came yesterday. Looks like half of the tracks on the live 5th disc are from On Stage: February 1970, I mentioned upthread.

The old From Elvis In Memphis didn't have the singles, did it? I have yet another packaging of that material called Suspicious Minds.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

Well, it looks like it did have "In The Ghetto."

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, Timi Yuro, looks like Elvis did a pretty good version of "Hurt" too.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 18 March 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

Sure did.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 18 March 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

The Sun Sessions (vinyl)
The Complete 50s Masters
The Comeback Special DVD
A handful of singles and EPs from the fifties, most in pretty bad shape but playable.
Keep meaning to pick up From Elvis In Memphis and Elvis is Back, but always seem to have higher priorities.

a bunch of stuff that he never heard that began with a letter.

Mark G, Monday, 23 June 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

i'm fond of elvis is back!, his awesome back-from-the-army, pre-soundtrack-era album that no one much talks about. the closing track, "reconsider baby," is possibly one of his 5 or 6 best tracks ever.

marcello's comeback to geir here is priceless but elvis never said that or anything like it.

Elvis Presley
Elvis
Elvis' Christmas Album
From Elvis In Memphis
'68 Comeback Special DVD
Aloha From Hawaii DVD
Burning Love (comp.)
HitStory (3CD edition: 30 #1 Hits + 2nd To None + The Story Continues)
At least a dozen of his movies on DVD

It's timely for me that this thread is back on the New Answers page, since I just bought my first Elvis album this weekend: a used copy of Elvis' Golden Records. I also have some tracks off of something called Elvis Presley Portrait on River Records that I downloaded on eMusic - sounds like maybe a vinyl transfer of some Sun tracks, not sure about how that works with copyright law and such.

o. nate, Monday, 23 June 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

(I also got a copy of Ricky Nelson's Legendary Masters Series Vol. 1, which is also good in that '50s rockabilly style.)

o. nate, Monday, 23 June 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

Currently:

- Scratched-to-hell vinyl copy of Elvis' Golden Records that I've owned since I was 7, fifteen years after my aunt bought it brand-new for herself.

- Nice copy of The Sun Collection - same content as "Sun Sessions" with a way-superior LP cover painting.

- Two CDs covering the same material

I could probably use more but don't feel a great need to.

Finally, I had the 45 of "Too Much" when I was about five, which I liked a lot until it became the first record that I ever broke (don't recall how.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

I just ripped the fifties and sixties box sets from the Library. That's pretty much all the Elvis a reasonable person needs, right?

Oilyrags, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Only a CD single of "That's All Right" I picked up at Graceland when I was there a couple years ago. Always wondered if I ever needed to bother with more.
