TS: Meaty Beaty Big and Boucy vs. Singles Going Steady

Singles that weren't all huge hits, or even hits at all, but sound like they should have been. A little rough and unformed and neurotic compared to the competition (Beatles, Stones...Pistols, Clash) but that's what makes them such cohesive albums. Orgasm Addict vs. Pictures of Lily, I Can See for Mile vs. Autonomy, Can't Explain vs. What Do I Get? I haven't pulled out either for a while, but I think I'd take Singles Going Steady

Singles. I acknowledge the Who but I just don't love them.

That Cheap Trick thread reminds me that they really deserved a 14-tracks-from-the-peak comp like these. So did Husker Du.

Tie!

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

Oh wait, I thought you were talking about Singles, 45s and Under!

In this case, I vote for the Who.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

gaw, boucy.

Man, who can choose?! Those are both among my Top 5 single-disc comps of the vinyl era. I think they're both practically flawless and bookend the '70s quite nicely. I'll take the 'cocks because I love the logic and symmetry of eight single A & B sides arranged chronologically, as compared to MBB&B's jumble of singles and album tracks sequenced in no particular order. (But that's today;: tomorrow I may decide I need a respite from incessant loudfast guitars and would welcome a silly ditty about spiders and magic buses.)

Um, the Who singles were hits.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

They weren't all singles were they? Were "Boris the Spider" and "Legal Matter" singles?

Tom D., Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, unofficial ones.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

The difference is that The Who LP misses out quite a few singles

Tom D., Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Several are also re-recordings.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

The difference is that the Who LP has "Can't Explain." Perfect power-chord power pop ftw.
