scott seward, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

2 Black 2 Strong!

Display Name, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Can You Party = 13 year old me's favourite song.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

classic - tech nine, cls, royal house, static, the raid, masters at work ('dum dum cry' and 'alright alright'), black riot, dms, younbloods, sound design, gypsymen. the list goes on and on. the man kicked off the uk rave / hardcore explosion and single handedly invented the slamming house beat. has been coasting on past glories for over a decade though.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

'Jumpin' (Unreleased Edit #3) would be my favourite.

I didn't know Terry was initially a Master At Work with Louie Vega but then passed it on to Kenny Dope.

if you like Todd's early 90s stuff also check out Wildchild's 'Wild Trax' series (esp. 'Jump To My Beat').

blueski, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

also - dupree's 'brass disk' and english friday's 'riots in brixton'. like i said, the list goes on and on.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

masters at work was originally kenny dope's name but he gave it to todd terry to use. todd terry then introduced kenny dope to louie vega and they took the name back when they started working together.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

altho surely when just one of them was using it they didn't pluralise the 'Master'?

blueski, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

they did. both the todd tery releases under the maw name are masterS at work. 'alright alright' even starts with a female voice saying 'masters at work...'

stirmonster, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

missing!

Classic you poxy fule

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

i downloaded a lot of the Past/Present/Future thing on eMusic

Todd did a dnb track called 'Blackout' around '96 that seemed to be relatively well received at the time. never heard it anywhere tho.

blueski, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

okay, the search function didn't pick up that thread. still, i'm glad this thread generated some discussion.

lfam, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

well, the google search function didn't pick it up

lfam, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

This thread has prompted me to add the Past, Present & Future box set to my Slsk wishlist, so it's definitely served some purpose!

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Orange Lemon Dreams of Santa Anna...electro/freestyle/cutting records style version of the Mexican.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Fingertrips Vol. 1! one of my most treasured.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

search out todd's "The Dream" and then search out frankie bones' lake eerie 12 inch called "the nightmare" which is an awesome freestyle answer record.

scott seward, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Indubitaly classic - does anyone know Tees Freeze Mix of Moloko "Sing it Back"? Even his foray into drum'n'bass was good.

Iain Macdonald, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

in the uppermost regions of classicness. i need to hear EVERYTHING eventually.

artdamages, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

i found this store with oodles of todd terry today, i'm going back tomorrow

You mean you walked into practically any used record store in NYC? I think I tripped over a crate of Lake Eerie records once.

Anyway, pretty classic. The Past/Present/Future thing is very good, even if CDs two and three repeating tracks from CD1 is a bit annoying. I'm curious why the liner notes were bereft of any info on the songs - did he run into problems with all of his sampling?

His PM Dawn remix is slamming.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 15 March 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

But have you seen my records?
This Heat, Pere Ubu, Outsiders, Nation of Ulysses, Mars, The Trojans, The Black Dice, Todd Terry, the Germs, Section 25, Althea and Donna

You mean you walked into practically any used record store in NYC?

no, i walked into a used record store in miami that was spun off of one in NYC. but if you wanna get territorial, i once got my car totalled by a u-haul full of TK records!

lfam, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

they stopped the bleeding with a crate of freestyle singles

lfam, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Miami was my second guess.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

alright! alright!

elan, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

How could he be anything other than classic? Without him there's no Armand, no Masters At Work, hell, arguably no Todd Edwards...

Tantrum The Cat, Friday, 19 October 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

no masters at work? but kenny dope and louie vega were already together before todd made his own maw songs.

elan, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

forget that, i know very little about the dope/louie maw

elan, Friday, 19 October 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

From Woebot: "People have mistakenly claimed that Todd gave the MAW moniker to Kenny Dope and Louie Vega, however according to Optimo's Twitch: "Masters at Work was originally Kenny Dope's name but he gave it to Todd Terry to use. Todd Terry then introduced Kenny Dope to Louie Vega and they took the name back when they started working together." So now you know."

I stand corrected!

Tantrum The Cat, Friday, 19 October 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

lol, thread comes full circle

masters at work was originally kenny dope's name but he gave it to todd terry to use. todd terry then introduced kenny dope to louie vega and they took the name back when they started working together.

such good friday evening jamssss

deej, Friday, 11 January 2008 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Kenny Dope > Todd Terry.

Terry has never sampled Chicago to make a slamming house track.

jim, Saturday, 12 January 2008 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

awesome song, awesome sleeve

one time, Saturday, 12 January 2008 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm maybe Kenny Dope is better than Todd Terry, but deej you should definitely pick up the Strictly MAW set in that series - the first twenty minutes of the Dope disc is seriously like woah.

Tim F, Saturday, 12 January 2008 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

mmmm, Sunday, 13 January 2008 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

Todd Terry is CLASSIC because his weird ass classic late 80's stuff sounds completely unlike anything before/then/since. Stuff still sounds amazing.
