"Can't Fight It" from the NO ALTERNATIVE compilation from the early 90's is a stunner!

MusicQuizKing, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Track two side one of Workbook, whatever that was called.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

see a little light is a nice song.

i like egooverride

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

That's a stunner, yes.

If you're not counting Sugar, I'd list a handful of Workbook tunes like "Brasilia Crossed with Trenton," "See a Little Light," and "Heartbreak Stranger." From the eponymous album I"d include "Anymore Time Between" and "Next T ime That You Leave."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

"That's a stunner, yes" referring to "Can't Fight It."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

"Wishing Well," that's the one I was thinking of. Also "Sinners And Their Repentances" from the same album.

I assume we are not counting Sugar as solo Mould.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

I was quite infatuated with Workbook in the early nineties, even though the well-paid rhythm section dawdles.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I went back to Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain and ugh, that rhythm section production is gawdawful. I hate you Tony Maimone.

the instrumental bit that opens Workbook is really nice.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

"Hoover Dam"

darin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Sugar >> Bob Mould.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

yeah of course, does anyone like solo bob more than sugar?

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

Sugar really was solo Mould anyway, right?

darin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

the instrumental bit that opens Workbook is really nice.

They used to play "Sunspots" during programming alerts on the Twin Cities PBS channel.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Well, no. Mould can't play very good drums or bass.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Was he any good at drum 'n' bass?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

ohohohohohohohohohoho

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

I asked what your favorite SOLO song was. No Sugar allowed. :)

MusicQuizKing, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

When did Jimmy Tarbuck come on this thread?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

I guess "Black Sheets of Rain" then. :(

darin, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

"(Shine Your) Light Love Hope", foolz.

(and then most of Workbook, really, and F it, Sugar = solo Mould for reals, so "Believe What You're Saying")

rogermexico., Wednesday, 14 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna say "Thumbtack," becuase I am A Real Fan.

David R., Wednesday, 14 March 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

I second "Black Sheets of Rain."

mulla atari, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

"Wishing Well."

M.V., Wednesday, 14 March 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

'out of your life' or 'skintrade'. i find that first solo record really hard to listen to.

typpo, Thursday, 15 March 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I went back to Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain and ugh, that rhythm section production is gawdawful. I hate you Tony Maimone.

Actually, it's partly what I like about Black Sheets of Rain. I love you, Tony Maimone.

As for best solo song, what about that track on the Golden Palominos album? Does that count? If not, I'd say "One Good Reason" on BSoR...

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 15 March 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

I hate Sugar! And I hate that Mould angst-as-stock-in-trade "Black Sheets of Rain" (mainly on theory, it is actually a good song). I think we all GOT IT with "Bed of Nails" if not way way sooner.

FWIW, and I have seen him a zillion times between Hüsker and solo, I like "Wishing Well".

I can still see him in the Workbook promo stills, sitting in his lavender and grey.

JACKRABBIT DONE RUN ACROSS THAT ROAD

...heh, not really.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 15 March 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

I hate you Tony Maimone.... I love you, Tony Maimone.

What is this, "Masochism World"? (I know, a Hart song,,,)

Put me down for loving the shit out of Tony! <3

I once would have said that it was "See a Little Light" but now I would say that it is in fact "Wishing Well."

Which makes me feel bad because I have tried to like things not from that record.

two years pass...

Just pulled out the District Line from last year to give it a spin this afternoon and was sort of stunned by how good "Stupid Now" is and trying to figure out why I didn't recognize that fact before now.

I still haven't heard Life and Times, but I just checked out the samples at Amazon and MM 17 sounds really good too.

That said, it's really hard to fuck with "See a Little Light" or "It's Too Late."

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 18 July 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

just reading the words "see a little light" made it jump into my head and stay there, so

bentley cadence (gbx), Saturday, 18 July 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

one year passes...

I love Workbook.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 January 2011 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

cosign. if mould and hart could have overcome their differences, they had at least one more great album in them (between their solo debuts: mould's workbook and hart's intolerance)

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 17 January 2011 13:21 (fifteen years ago)

Great songs on both solo albums, but I think sonically Husker Du: rock band were going downhill - the last album so samey and lacking in dynamics, that one guitar sound (as great as it is),the same drum patterns - a shame as they still wrote some very good songs. Hart complained Mould's songs were becoming too square, and I think another Warehouse would have finished them off anyway. 20 songs a year after Candy Apple Grey was complete madness.

Master of Treacle, Monday, 17 January 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

eight years pass...

I'd really be tempted to put Brasilia Crossed with Trenton at the top of my hypothetical ILM Bob Mould poll.

campreverb, Monday, 28 January 2019 17:11 (seven years ago)

New album has leaked, it's pretty good and lives up to it's "Sunshine Rock" title by adding keys and other sounds to move beyond some of the recent dour LPs (which are all great).
