OK, I know all about NTM, MC Solaar and IAM. What of the more recent wave of Gallic rap, though? I just randomly came across 'Pole Nord' by Sefyu, and it's one of the freshest things I've heard for a while...

LIM "C Pour Mes Frères" is a 12 minute freestyle featuring a lineup of hash dealers. Practically a field recording!

blunt, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, IAM, when i was in France in 97, that's all i heard.

I am dangerous!

Drooone, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

Radio Skyrock.com on Fridays at about this hour is 100% hip hop français.

blunt, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

We're going to France this summer so I'll be looking to pick up some new CDs.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

The best hip-hop I heard when I was there a year ago was some solo work by Cuizinier from the group TTC. [Removed Illegal Link] his myspace page, although my comp audio is broken right now, so i don't know if those tracks suck. if they do, there are others that don't..

Argh - I have to say that I find Cuizinier one of the most irritating rappers I've heard in a while. The beats are usually pretty good, but that whiny voice really gets on my nerve. Also, if you understand French, the lyrics are pretty abysmal.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 15 March 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone else heard 'Nique La Police' by NTM/Cut Killer? Sampling KRS-ONE and Edith Piaf for the same track is a major triumph.

baboon2007, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

I thought that was by Saian Supa Crew, non? They are incidentally an excellent band. I bought that Micro Ecole album by IAM on my last visit to France. It's ten years old but it still sounds pretty fresh.

Yea, he's not quite Joanna Newsom, but I see what you mean. One track I remember liking starts off with him saying, in English, "KICK YOU BACK INTO TIME LIKE MARTY MACFLY." It's accented and a little too loud, though, so he sounds deaf.. which is how a lot of French rappers sound when they "holler" something in English, I guess.

I asked these thuggish, [i]petites racailles[/] types on a night bus who the best rapper in the world was and they all agreed it was 50-Cent.

one year passes...

Anything new this year worth checking out?

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure about this year, but for the past, Luceien, Luceien, Luceien, Luceien, you should know...

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Lucien

Moved to NYC in the late eighties where he became a cult figure of the hip hop movement, A Tribe Called Quest paying tribute to his hardship with the track Luck of Lucien.
Moves back to France in 1995 where he works on the hip hop soundtrack of hit tv series Les Lascars.
In 2001, in a confused argument with his manager he sets his manager's threshold on fire, the blaze eventually killing two inhabitants of the building.
Although police investigations fail to track any suspect down, he turns himself in.
He is sentenced to 8 years in late September 2006.

He produced this track for Suprême NTM (who you may also want to check out):

Adek Dark's is good. You can download his newish EP at the link. I have an mp3 of an incredible older song of his if anyone's interested. Different sound than the new stuff, more like an outtake from the Blueprint, only, y'know, in French.

From Crammed records:

"BLACK" is a neo-Blaxploitation film set in Dakar (Senegal), directed by Pierre Laffargue and starring famous, provocative French rapper MC Jean Gab'1. The film was warmly welcomed on its world premiere at SXSW ("From a modern update of Shaft in Africa to a lunatic, witchy, bastard offspring of Cat People and Ssssss. Gloriously lunatic" - Cinematical.com).

The exciting original theme song - a driving Afrobeat track written & recorded by Tony Allen and featuring the inimitable vocal stylings of MC Jean Gab'1 - will be coming out in July as a digital single and promo CD, to coincide with the theatrical release of the film in France. As for the soundtrack album, it will also feature a wealth of gems from the '70s as well as great contemporary tracks (complete track list to be announced soon).

The film will be shown this Summer at various film festivals in the UK (including London's Film 4 Frightfest on Aug 28 & 30), Canada and the Czech Republic.

I need to hear this!

Tracer what'd you think of the tracks?

Dan Majerle and the Wailers (Whitey on the Moon), Friday, 17 July 2009 04:16 (sixteen years ago)

i haven't had time to listen to them yet :(

Tracer Hand, Friday, 17 July 2009 09:57 (sixteen years ago)

the last ttc album is good (the old stuff of theirs sounds a bit less interesting) but theyre apparently regarded as a bit too jokey by some french hip hop fans.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 17 July 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, as I've said elsewhere, when you understand their lyrics, the whole thing becomes unbearable.

Reclusive French rap duo PNL shun record deal, shoot to top of iTunes chart

Dunno if their music's particularly special, but the whole mysterious-identity thing is pretty interesting. And the Guardian reader comments of "this is not music" made me decide I should like it.

^ They claim to avoid self-publicity, but advertising your album in the middle of a police raid? Hmm that's bogus

Haha, I know him as one of my very favorite DJs (and he ran the fantastic label Sound Pellegrino), but apparently also was part of a rap group called TTC in the '00s, and this is his first time rapping in a decade.
