Matthew Perpetua MP3Js for the likes of New Order and the Fiery Furnaces.

You might think that doesn't count, but you'd be wrong.

I'm thinking more along the line of someone who talks about DJing, not about the actual music, but the order/progression, timing, etc etc

MaGoGo, Thursday, 15 March 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

i'll do it for you right here right now. Start slow...increase speed. Try not to train-wreck to much.

Comments?

My friend Joseph mostly talks about the music but talks a bit about DJing...

i think the best place to get what your looking for is the message board at djhistory.com

...or just buy their book, "How To DJ Properly," since it talks about mixing, progression, timing, etc in heavy detail. I think it has exactly what you are looking for.

I've read both their books, but I think the forum at djhistory.com will help some.

seriously, the only way to learn is by doing it, a lot, to tough and unpredictable crowds, on shitty equipment, while drunk.

dan selzer, Sunday, 18 March 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

Done. Done. And Done.

I just thought it'd fun to read what other people have to say. DJing is changing obviously (see: Birdy Nam Nam, Four Tet, Kid Koala, Diplo, etc etc...) (also see: Serato, Tractor Studio, MP3Jing, CD-Jing, etc etc)

It'd be nice if there was someone out there who talked about new techniques (and technics) as possibly lighter on the music side (there are enough music bloggers out there).

On Friday a guy kept asking me to play current chart pop/r&b tracks while I was playing disco.

"I don't have any records made after 1982."

I repeated that four times before the guy walked off.

rayna's "process" series invites DJs to record mixes and talk about the process (technical, conceptual, whatever) behind it all.

I'm a much better DJ now that I don't drink while playing...I think, but I definitely don't enjoy it as much. So I'd remove the "while drunk" part, except that being drunk makes stuff like shitty equipment less annoying.

Ronan, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

don't remove 'while drunk'...but add '..and sometimes on pills'

grap-fu, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

i've had it the other way round so far, shitty equiptment at home (one direct drive deck with broken tone arm weight and one belt drive with jumpy-ass needle), so when i get to play out it's an absolute delight to mix on decks that don't take half a minute to wind back up to speed, and stay in time with each other etc. my decks at home are so temperamental i'm finding it difficult to come up with interesting transitions and impacts and whatnot and tend to just eq and cut, i'm a sucker for dramatically cutting the bass theo parrish style, i feel like i have discovered the secret of the universe or something.

rio natsume, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

for me the drunk part didn't make it more fun, seriously I think it helped me loosen up and learn how to have fun instead of being super neurotic about the whole thing. I don't drink much at all anymore, but definitely remember the drink helping me have a good time and not beating myself up over a shitty transition or something.

i think that's the thing...when sober you think about mistakes more...or things like people harassing you to play stuff is annoying.

Do people seriously pay to learn how to DJ?

This can't be real.

MaGoGo, Monday, 26 March 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

Price: $695.00

Wow, you could buy a shitload of records with that kind of money.

I've seen a bunch of craigslist posts saying "I'm looking for someone to teach me how to DJ."

Michael F Gill, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

Is there anything more boring than posting setlists?

Jordan, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Playing them?

Depending on the person's age, that is kinda cute. (Read: only cute when you're under ten or over 80 yrs old. Otherwise majorly dud.)

stevienixed, Monday, 26 March 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

I will teach you how to dj the dan selzer style. then you can make no money and have nobody come to your parties or book you either! Remember, we can't call you...
