Forget "I thought Kraftwerk were black!!" - who has the most unexpected vocals? Doesn't necessarily have to be fat/skinny of course.

My stock answer to this is Rick Astley.

Tiny Green from Ultrasound had a tiny, whiny voice, very similar to Ozzy Osbourne...

Alice Russell, on the other hand, has a huge voice...(not that she's a skinny minnie, but she's not big)...

and what, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not really sure what he looks like, but does Bloke Out Of Canned Heat count?

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Both singers in Canned Heat looked exactly like how they sounded

Tom D., Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Who sang "Goin' Up the Country" and "On The Road Again", was that Alan Wilson or "Bear" Hite? And were they both fat,or just Bear? 'Cause those hits DEFINITELY were skinny-sounding, absolutely.

Also vocally undernourished: Tiny Tim, Baby Huey. (Note ironic monikers!)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Alan Wilson sang those - skinny(ish) record-collecting geek with glasses
Bob Hite sang "Let's Work Together" et al - fat biker-type with beard, apparently the inspiration for Capt. Beefheart's "Gimme Dat Harp Boy":

"Gimme dat harp boy,
Ain't no fat man's toy"

CLASSIC moment in "Woodstock" when some freak in the audience crashes the stage during Canned Heat's set, apparently just to bum a smoke off Hite! The Bear is visibly startled but doesn't miss a beat, just puts his arm around the guy, buddy-buddy and finishes the verse. The guy grabs a cig from Hite's shirt pocket and returns to the appreciative crowd.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Bob "The Bear" Hyte had the high voice!

Mark G, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

Daniel Johnston since he got fat.
Ben Gibbard.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 15 March 2007 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Mike Gerald from Killdozer is a small, thin man - but sounds like a lumberjack

UncleTomfly, Thursday, 15 March 2007 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

David Thomas - wondrously whine-y-voiced considering his not unremarkable rotundity :)

t**t, Thursday, 15 March 2007 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

not that they/he is fat....more pleasantly plump more cushion for the pushin' etc, but i was really surprised when i saw what grandaddy looked like...i thought they would be more fashion plate indie dudes, not weirdo neil young-ish ex-skateboarder lumberjacks gone to seed.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 15 March 2007 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Edith Frost. She sounds skinny.

Drooone, Thursday, 15 March 2007 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Jeremy "Junior Boys" Greenspan...(again, not fat, but certainly a bit frumpier than I would have expected)...

henry s, Thursday, 15 March 2007 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Is there any truth to the story that Bob Hite (or maybe Al Wilson) was once given access to the Sun Records loft to grap some rare 78's and after he had chosen his stash, he purposely SMASHED all the remaining existing copies of the sides he chose, so that nobody else could have them!!!!????!!!!

Rikard Fortworth, Thursday, 15 March 2007 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

edith frost isn't fat.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 15 March 2007 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

whoever said that Baby Huey had a skinny voice: you are wrong. sorry-- dude's version of 'Change is Gonna Come' has much powerful vocal display, and i'm not just talking about the echo effects.

Before I knew what she looked like I had a mad crush on Mama Cass. I based this solely on Dream a Little Dream Of Me, where she sounded like the dreamiest person ever. Then i grew up and learned things.

haha Shyne. i've always thought that right after Biggie died Shyne must have really scared some people on the phone by accident.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

ok this thread.

Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav.

Nobody said it wasn't powerful, and 'skinny' isn't meant to be a pejorative (and isn't.)

But nonetheless, I confess: I was actually thinking of Billy Stewart. (Embarrassing mixup)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

Neil Young?
