That article is way more fun than the song.

blueski, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

no it's not

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

but that's not really a failing of the article as nothing is better than mims

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

damning!

blueski, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

it's like the 2001 monolith

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

we can merely swat at it with a thighbone

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

That's strange. I'd never noticed that before:

Nothing is better than Mims = There is no thing that is better than Mims
Nothing is better than Mims = Mims can only aspire to his own absence

Spooky!

Pye Poudre, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

yet both are somehow true

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

I like the Skee-Lo reference. That's what hip-hop is missing right now. Think back to the early '90s, when there was avibe that anyone could strike with a goofball, smart fun-ass rap. Between Hammer, Digital Undergroudd Vanilla Ice, Positive K, Fu-Schnikens, Sir Mix-a-Lot and others, thems was just fun times.

Jiminy Krokus, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

haha that's awesome.

what is a guap btw?

I like diagrams but this smacks of the "let's translate biggie lyrics into ultra-correct grammar" chiz, ha ha, it is hilarious that WE, even ME, are writing about this stuff! Let us hyperextend our seriousness as a defense against feeling like we are wasting our lives writing about material that our fathers would consider beneath us! This review is fun but it's also (not-so-) slightly mocking about its subject. Which seems like a strange position for a music editor to take about a song he professes to like. The sarky half-serious tone just makes the whole thing weird - is "reclaiming" the word "hot" really an invaluable gift to us? I would bet RH doesn't actually think so. So why is he saying so?

I like diagrams but this smacks of the "let's translate biggie lyrics into ultra-correct grammar"

Except somehow it's sort of demeaning to Biggie's talents to do so, whereas here it feels perfectly appropriate.

There probably is some degree of mocking involved, but at least it's good natured. Harvilla's most famous stunt was the one in 2003 where he had a class of fifth graders draw pictures inspired (or distorted) by Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief."

Jiminy Krokus, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

"This Is Why I'm Hot" is a lens that reflects something differently for everyone who looks into it. For some, it's the song that taught them about the phrase "guap." For me, it's the song that revealed how many people have never heard the phrase "guap."

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

My favorite recent occurence of "guap" is in Fiend's "What is U Saying" from his album last year...its not even in his verse, just the intro

deej, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

to be fair, i thought he was saying "guac" the first dozen or so times

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

He shouts it in his sedated-Mystikal voice. good times

deej, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

and i doubt i'm the only one.

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

maybe if he re-records it for a chilis ad, he can get in on some of that outback steakhouse/of montreal money

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

If rappers talked about guacamole as much as they talked about money I'd probably identify with way more hip hop these days.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 15 March 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe someone (haikunym?) can reccomend some Chingo Bling songs about guac.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

more songs need to be about food period

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

al you racist

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

"Holy guacamole homie"
-T.I.

deej, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna assume that's a Harvilla racism joke and that you're not actually offended by the insinuation that a guy who calls himself "the Tamale Kingpin" would know something about Mexican food.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

somebody photoshop mims in here:

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

i take message board racism very seriously

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

you really didn't reproduce David Byrne's skin tone very accurately there, dude.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

while he may not be what you're used to seeing in "scratch," i can assure that david byrne is in fact a white man

strongohulkington, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

somebody photoshop David Byrne running over Mims with a tractor

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

this is why i'm scared of music

xxpost

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)
