So I have a handful of Erkin Koray records and all the Turkish ethno-psychedelic comp.s I have heard are fine. But the1971 French-issued album LES MOGOL: Danses et Rythmes de la Turquie by Mogollar is kicking my ass so hard lately -- what the fuck else is like this?

More on them here

***Also if anyone's seen the band, please let me know if they're any good nowadays (slim chance I know, but how great is/ was Trad Gras och Stenar?!) as my housemate is trying to help them with a US tour (their first).***

There was some great Turkish reissue I reviewed recently for the AMG but the name escapes me. I'll double check on it tonight. Bucimlyar or something similar I think.

And Elvis Telecom to thread of course.

bunalim (aka bunalimlar aka grup bunalim), i'm guessing. heavier acid stuff on shadoks.

i can't really think of anything like mogollar. devil's anvil, sorta? orient express, kinda? maybe later brain work more.

There are actually a lot of more recent clips of Mogollar on youtube, Mike, but I've only watched a couple little bits.

Wow, that was quick -- thanks for the Youtube and comparison tips! I see the Devil's Anvil album around quite a bit but was always put off by the cover somehow...

Exactly it, thanks. My review here and I love the cover:

Mogollar - not the early freakbeat stuff, but when they started using the traditional instruments - actually might have been kind of unique for their time, yeah?

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

good review, ned.

hey, can we turn this into a general anadolu rock thread? 'cos then we could talk about the super-funky mustafa ozkent cd, the reissued selda album which i haven't heard, and the edip akbayram 2cd. edip, man, he was a melancholy cat. hairy, too.

really curious about this now... anywhere to hear samples?

modestmickey, Thursday, 15 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

hey rickey -- the one time i made a MOG post i put up an early pop-psych mogollar tune.

this album i'm referring is way closer to trad gras or sun city girls, even, but this is certainly nice: http://mog.com/Mike_McGonigal/blog_post/42667

I DEMAND to know why the ATP royalty haven't invited Erkin Koray to anything. Go directly to the Elektronik Türküler album.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 15 March 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

Also, the recent Selda reissues are U & K - mostly using trad-folk as a jumping off point to all sorts of weird directions. I wish I knew some Turkish so I could pick up on the politics.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 15 March 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

What label handled those?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 March 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

Finder Keepers.
