So there's this CD-trading web site, and here's some of the stuff I got from it so far...

I posted the following in the lala.com thread, but it has a boring title and no one is paying attention to it, so here goes. I think lala could use a few ILMers, and a few ILmers may find the service up their alley, so chalk this up as my sad attempt at getting folks to check it out.

You have the option of receiving only CDs with art, though they guarantee only the front booklet (but I do receive the tray liner about 70-75% of the time). I love it. It gets pretty addictive, and I'm really surprised that I have yet to see any prominent ILMer on there. I've received rare stuff (Danny Krivit's Grass Roots 2-CD set - cheapest [and only] copy on Amazon: $49.99) and plenty of CDs you wouldn't expect to get through trading - The Fall, Nick Drake, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Chico Science, K.McCarty's Daniel Johnston tribute, the new Joe Bataan best-of, Funkadelic, a Black Sabbath import with full digipak, the Young Gods' debut, the Folk and Pop Sounds of Sumatra on the Sublime Frequencies label, Sonny Sharrock, Paolo Conte, Caetano Veloso, Amon Duul II on Japanese import, a great out-of-print best-of by Gil Scott-Heron, Buddhist monk chants on Nonesuch Records, Gary Stewart's debut, Wide Right, Sun Ra, Les Negresses Vertes, the Rough Guide to the Music of Kenya... Right now I have Clipse's Hell Hath No Fury coming my way, but it's the edited version 'cause I put that on my Want List by accident (but I probably would never have gotten the uncensored version - it's in pretty high demand).

i do not understand.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

like i just see myself sending out cds and waiting for months to get things that never arrive. the internet is a wretched hive of scum & c.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Gott Punch - they guarantee the CDs - if you report something as unreceived or unplayable, you'll be next in line for another copy of the same CD.

Patrick, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

alright, i'm looking at the website. am i correct in assuming you have no choice over what you get first? is an easy way to get around that by having a small wantlist?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, you can't prioritize stuff on your want list. If you choose to have a small want list, you might have to wait for a while to get the stuff you want, esp. with high-demand CDs (most recent releases, esp. by high-profile indie bands, as well as cult classics and seldom-traded rarities). On the other hand, if you get to a point where you have shipped 10 more CDs than you've received, then you head to the top of the queue for high-demand stuff (most requested CD currently: The Shins' Chutes Too Narrow).

Haha, I just caught a request for the Breeders' Last Splash - it's great when you get to unload something that everybody already owns.

Patrick, Friday, 16 March 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

i wish you could trade promos.

kleight, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

My first experience with LaLa was sending out a CD to someone who never got the CD (supposedly) and now when ever I get a CD request, the request is filled by someone else before I get a chance to say yes or no.

Therefore, I do declare the LaLa service as shite.

MaGoGo, Saturday, 17 March 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Don't wait to get those CD requests by e-mail, 'cause you take the risk of someone else fulfilling them before you do, especially if they're stuff that a lot of users are trying to unload. Log on to the web site instead, and click on the bubble next to "Have List" on the upper left side of the screen - it will lead you to a list of your CDs that are requested by other users. You can also download software that will alert you when you get a new ship request.

Trading promos is against lala policy, but many users will accept them if you let them know in advance that it's what you're sending them, and let them know of any difference (artwork, track listing, etc) between the promo and the actual release. I've done it a few times.

I just got Front 242, LFO, His Name Is Alive, and Psychic TV. And I've gotten Loop, 808 State, Lush, Curve, The Boo Radleys and a ton more in the past... who the hell wants to part with that shit? I mean besides arguably the last 3

yeah, that's exactly the kind of shit that makes me hesitant. also having your website setup be so incredibly crap as to require me to click the "lost my password" button, wait for an email and then clicking that to change my password - and then never acknowledging the change, leaving me to go through this over and over - doesn't fill me with confidence.

really, i miss back when you could just trade with other people without having to pay some crummy dicks a dollar for the privilege. or put up with the creepy "we're a great big happy indie rockin family" website vibe.

This looks like a more promising way to unload stuff I don't want anymore than going to a used CD store and getting shit for trade. I might give it a shot...

three weeks pass...
My first experience with LaLa was sending out a CD to someone who never got the CD (supposedly)

This happened to me when I first started sending CDs with lala.com, so I stopped, but recently somehow I lured back into trading CDs. I have about fifty CDs listed, random stuff I never listen to and don't care to listen to, and I get about a CD/day.

Unfortunately, the majority of the stuff I get is pop stuff that I don't really care too much for, but would like it in my collection. Definitely have gotten some good stuff though i.e. Morrissey, Depeche Mode, Cure, Wilco, Bowie, Bjork.

Plus lots more stuff.

I ended up joining, and have gotten some good pop stuff so far. The only thing is their new iPod interface and online player sucks.

MC, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

I wish there was a way to trade CDs for vinyl. I'm currently in the process of liquidating my entire CD collection.
