8 CD? 2 DVDS? shut yo mouth neil! step the fuck back, man, headz ain't ready for the shit you got...headz ain't ready man i swear they're not!

awesome.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

I'll believe it when I see it on the shelves. But yeah, it does look pretty awesome. And this one just goes up to 1972? Ha ha. Anyone have any idea how much this will cost me?

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've been working at the studio where they've been preparing this. I practically jumped out of my skin when I saw the room with all the original tape reels. this is gonna be great.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

i think there are blurbs about it in the new archives Massey Hall CD (which is *sublime)

stevie, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

wow really? any tidbits of info you'd like to share? I'm really hoping for "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" and "After The Gold Rush" outtakes...

xpost

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

oh shit! footage from journey through the past! might he actually release the HDCD or the actual film on this? I've been kinda obsessed with that album for the past month.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

These things are going to be so awesome, although I'm still pretty skeptical considering how long they've been in the works. I remember when he first set up a website to hype these, I think I first saw it in, what, '98? But yeah, I am so thrilled to think these may actually see release soon. I just hope they aren't insanely expensive.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

they're kinda understandably paranoid about the material and people stealing stuff so I didn't really pry. The studio's done the last few DVDs for Neil so there's some funny stories (band calling studio to see if anybody has any weed, etc.). This is all second-hand though, I've yet to meet the actual engineers involved with the archives project.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

So yeah, I think it has literally been 20 years since Shakey started talking about this project. Am I right in thinking that the audio portion of the box set will be all studio recordings (since the Performance Series single discs are covering the live shows)? An actual release of "Journey Through the Past" would be cool. I don't care how bad it is--it's got to be better than "Human Highway", right?

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

they're kinda understandably paranoid about the material and people stealing stuff so I didn't really pry.

understandable. but your first name *is* shakey after all, that should earn you some pull over there.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

An actual release of "Journey Through the Past" would be cool. I don't care how bad it is

it's actually really really good! totally corrosive version of "ohio", and the last half is like some messed-up audio collage that includes field recordings and a hypnotic 16 minute version of "words". I loves it. it smells like history.

but neil's such a heartbreaker, he'll probably put everything out *except* that.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

i have journey through the past on vinyl, it's good.

the real tragedy of neil's back catalog though is "time fades away" being out of print.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

yeah Time Fades Away is one of my favorites. "Yonder Stands the Sinner"!

but then I also like "Human Highway".

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I've got Journey Through the Past on record as well--I was talking about the movie...will that ever see the light of day again? And yes, it is fairly ridiculous that Neil has never gotten around to issuing Time Fades Away on CD---it's one of his best albums! For serious.

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

since this is actually on the label's website I would be surprised if it doesn't come out now. It would be nice if he'd reissue the early cds as well, since the packaging on them is kind of rubbish and they could do with a remaster treatment (I've held off buying anymore expecting this to happen for two years)

akm, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, the only early one I have on CD is Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and its kinda too bright and crisp.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

(almost all my Neil stuff is on vinyl and I prefer it that way.)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

Neil sounds better on vinyl anyway. Just get the original records.

sexyDancer, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

the hdcd remaster of time fades away leaked a while ago. it is awesome.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

avoid at all costs the "Everybody Knows..." CD. It is pretty crappy sounding compared to the LP. I think the remastered stuff on that recent greatest hits CD sounds a lot better, too.

And regarding the Times Fades Away HDCD leak--where can i find this?

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

sent you a message tylerw

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Can you send me a message as well? :)

J, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

when is the Time Fades Away HDCD set to be released?

Also, Shakey, I'm assuming that 2 of the 8 discs on this will be the Massey Hall and Fillmore ones that were just released? Is that correct?

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

God, I hope not! That would be kind of lame, since I've already bought those two. The way I understood it was that the Live Performance Series was something different from the box set. But maybe I'm wrong?

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Shakey, I'm assuming that 2 of the 8 discs on this will be the Massey Hall and Fillmore ones that were just released? Is that correct?

I'll ask, but yeh this was my assumption too.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

cool lemme know if you can...i haven't bought massey yet and if it is gonna be in the box i'll probably just hold off. thx

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

As someone mentioned upthread, I think the Performance Series stuff that's been released is separate from the Archives boxes.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

when is the Time Fades Away HDCD set to be released?

there is no release date. it was supposed to be done with on the beach and whatever else was in that first wave of hdcds, but neil didn't like the way it came out and he put the kibosh on it. journey through the past was done in hdcd as well but that never leaked.

problem is both of the original releases were cobbled together from two track tapes, and parts of journey were pulled straight from video so there's only so far you can go in making them super hifi. tfa sounds great anyways. hopefully it will be in archives vol 2. as a ditch trilogy fan that will be wot gets me excited, tho having journey in vol 1 would be pretty reet.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

From I can gather from what Niel's been sayin is that the NYArchvie boxes will contain EVERYTHING he ever recorded.

So you know the difference. Some of it is good, some of it is crap that wasn't released-there's a reason. Take a look, see what it is. That's what a fuckin' archive is about, not "Here's Neil Young in all his wonderfulness-the great, phenomenal fucking wonderfulness." That's not what I want.

I want people to know how fuckin' terrible I was. How scared I was and how great I was. The real picture-that's what I'm looking for. Not a product. And I think that's what the die-hard fans want - the whole fuckin' thing." -Neil Young

sexyDancer, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

Grazia Ed!

J, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

okay, to answer some questions:
- my guy at the studio says yes, Massey Hall and Fillmore are going to be included on the box set. He also sez: "wow yer in for a treat, espesh the ealy 60s guitar inst. serf stuff ya think I kid, but no."
- As for Neil and Rick James in the Mynah Birds

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the updates. I'm kinda pissed now that I just shelled out for Fillmore and Massey tho.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

this will probably be one of the only boxed sets I've ever shelled out money for (the other one being BACK TO MONO)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

this will be the first box set i've ever bought. i'm dreading finding out how much this'll cost.

modestmickey, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

shakey, would you mind inquiring about journey through the past, album or film or both? no worries if you've pressed yr luck, don't want to turn this thread into a flood of q's for you. I'm just way curious about that.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

haha - no worries, he's a close friend/bandmate/neighbor and we will be getting drunk and karaoke'ing later today as a matter of fact. I'll ask

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

scraping together a few amazon.com gift certificates and getting in on the pre-order price will probably take the edge off this one.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

wow, thanks man.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

don't worry I'll hook you up with an illegal download just like you like

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

Back to Mono goes for like $15 these days

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 25 July 2024 21:16 (one year ago)

^^ and does that live "Shots" sound better?

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 25 July 2024 21:19 (one year ago)

it does sound better! the boarding house stuff is all nice soundboard recordings which haven't been booted previously. amazing stuff.
the 76 crazy horse live stuff is awesome.
the "Snapshot in Time" disc is a treat, as is the Give To The Wind Orchestra rehearsal recording — both very informal but totally nice. I love the early version of "lost in space," which has Neil on piano (and Ron Wood on guitar?).
the synth pop "razor love" is fantastic, as is "johnny" from the trans era.

tylerw, Thursday, 25 July 2024 21:25 (one year ago)

it's pretty much the same as the bootlegs that have been around — jagged and angry, not quite gelling.

They probably won't include it, but back in '16, when Fathom Events did a satellite to theatres double-feature of Human Highway and Rust Never Sleeps, they had between the films a special live audience of fans thing with Neil & Cameron Crowe. After a brief interview about the films, they took audience questions, one of the last of which was this older woman who started talking about how much Neil's songs and outspokenness about addiction meant to her because all of her children were addicts (IIRC, one had just died), and she asked about solutions/coping, to which Neil offered very sage advice about to not blame yourself and that, after a point, only the addict themselves can make the decision to stop.

It was so shocking, because up to that point the show had been so fanservicey (Crowe introduced Neil as "The man who got us to buy Ponos so we could own Time Fades Away again!"), and then suddenly everything <GOT REAL>

I read a couple posts on the Hoffman forums which were not entirely pleased with the new mix on Mirror Ball , but more that were thinking it sounded pretty good. Since I’m not nitpicky, I’m not too concerned. Going to try to pick that box up this weekend since I’ve been waiting for these to show up for years. Though apparently harvest moon is the same cut as the RSD release from a few years ago.
