That band from the UK called South - anyone remember "Paint The Silence" from 2000?

I found one thread about them here, but it wasn't descriptive enough, and was about their second album (not that I knew one existed until now). But anyway, what happened was, I awoke to my alarm clock yesterday and the first thing I heard on the radio was South "Paint The Silence" and I had completely forgot about that song, I was amazed. It's a delightful cross of Stone Roses & shoegazing, I think. I assumed I must have sold their first album "From Here On In", upon which this song appears and I didn't have good memories of the album besides that song, but miraculously still found it in my stacks. And the album doesn't sound bad at all now, a damn sight better than all these awful bands that keep coming out of the U.K. now whose names all start with "The".

Seek out their single from last year, "A Place in Displacement." New Order could've jammed it onto Substance and you'd never know the difference.

Boy, Johnny, you sure know how to get me excited about hearing stuff. You better be careful there with the New Order Substance comparisons...:)

From Here On In is a really good album - I loved their first bunch of lo-fi singles as well. great band. i'm not as excited by the newer stuff as some people - all i can assume is that it's all they've heard as the first album is entirely superior.

Oh, I like the first album a lot too... the second one somewhat less so.

But the latest one is the best they've ever sounded, to me at least.

Well I checked out the song, Johnny, and although I wouldn't have put it on Substance (too modern for that) it definitely sounded like a possible Get Ready outtake. I was impressed. It's fun to come across things that allow you to think you're hearing New Order when you're not.

"Paint the Silence" was a wonderful single. Alas, South. Sort of a They Could've Been Bigger Than Embrace thing. I don't know if they knew what they wanted to be when they achieved that first fame, and audiences aren't kind to bands that "evolve" as dramatically as they have. I still listen to "Silence" at least five times a year.

I think they got sidetracked into being James Lavelle's Mo'Wax house band for a while too -- I think if you search out the Sexy Beast soundtrack they did some stuff there as well.

Woah ho! I think you're right, Mr. Fever, this 2006 album is sounding so gorgeously lovely right now but I guess I should wait until I've heard more than two songs...still...this is delicious fun and the Verve never got anywhere near this, I know that much.

Got this song lodged in my head. Remembered discussing it with someone on here, but forgot it was Bimble. ;_;
