playing it now. first impression: not as good as A Sun That Never Sets, but better than The Eye Of Every Storm. And it's very much in the same vein as those two. Warrior poetry spoken word interludes are a plus, if you ask me. Need more time to digest. Possible Albini-weariness setting in. But then something will tear my head off and all is forgiven. But still...
anyway, love them and love hearing new stuff. and love that it isn't actually a band that sounds like them and is in fact them!
according to the ever speedy wikipedia, this leaked on the internet today! so root around if that's your thing. i wouldn't know where to send you.

I like it.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Sunday, 18 March 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

I like it more every time I play it.

scott seward, Sunday, 18 March 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

It is doubtless of the rock.

I just can't imagine caring about Neurosis at this point. But enjoy it if it's still your thing.

unperson, Sunday, 18 March 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

okay.

two weeks pass...
seriously growing on me. it's just so long that it's hard to take it all in. needs lots of listens. very heavy and very deep. even if i am getting tired of alibini-drums :(

Someone tied horns to that horse.

four months pass...

my younger brother just bought this, i'm seriously impressed with him

Just got offed, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

how did he find out about Neurosis?

djmartian, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Through me, when I lent him/ordered him to listen to my copy of 'A Sun The Never Sets'. He's gotten into Isis, Katatonia, Opeth and other alternative metal acts through his friends. But yeah, he loved ASTNS, and so went out this lunchtime and bought the new one! :D

*That Never Sets, obv.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

i'm currently listening to this, actually, and it's brilliant.

Warrior poetry spoken word interludes are a plus, if you ask me.

OTM

seven months pass...

i quite like this album, and enjoy it more overall than the two that came before it

however, sometime about 7 years ago i became infatuated with a record called 'through silver in blood', and have been holding every neurosis record up against it since. only 'times of grace' really came close.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

i should clarify that i know 'tsib' was released in '96, but i got into the band well after the event, and subsequently had a lot of backtracking to do.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

I think this is their 2nd best record actually.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

whoa big call!
but one that i'm sure is well founded.
the title track that opens the record is magnificent

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

I play this album all the time and havent got tired of it. Same with TSIB when it came out.
2007 was excellent as long standing bands like Neurosis, Electric Wizard, High On Fire, Ulver released some of the/or at least close to the best stuff they ever made (IMO)

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

i agree with your observation about high on fire
and think that 'shadows of the sun' is ulver's greatest acheivement since nattens madrigal (which seems like an eternity ago)
so yeah.
the latest electric wizard is still yet to floor me. but i need to listen to it more.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

You do, I think it's the equal of Dopethrone

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

listening now. 'dunwich' is an awesome track

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

The album is chock-full of awesome tracks.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

more spacy and less immediate than the likes of 'dopethrone'. not as thick or layered or heavy. but still pretty good, definitely.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 20 March 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

I revived the EW thread yesterday too :)

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 20 March 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

haha i noticed

to keep (loosely) on the topic of neurosis, does anyone think that scott kelly's vocal contribution on mastodon's track 'crystal skull' is one of the best things about that album? i do.

am listening to 'times of grace' now. this band really is a powerhouse. very controlled, but very, very heavy

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 20 March 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

the last minute of 'locust star' on through silver in blood threatens to take your head off

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

actually the best way of describing 'locust star' is that it's like being sucked into a massive pit.

and another thing about this band is that the vocals are absolutely fantastic.
