Madonna notwithstanding.

Will M.I.A. be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
Remember, "innovation and influence" are critical factors.

I can't see any British bands making it for the forseeable future. Maybe Radiohead, but they're a long ways off. The Smiths and New Order have a chance, but probably not.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 18 March 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

They haven't bothered inducting T. Rex yet = abandon all hope etc.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 18 March 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, T.Rex man. I have just started reading the book Lost In Music by Giles Smith and I end up laughing out loud on the bus despite myself. Shit, he was really on to something there.

The Smiths and New Order have a chance, but probably not.

IF ONLY, but no.

Where's Cliff Richard when we need him most?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 18 March 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

Perusing that futurerockhall site, I see the Dave Clark Five, Dire Straits and Peter Gabriel --all afterthought picks-- as the only likely British inductees in the next decade. Who am I forgetting?

hahahah
likely story...big foghat revival 2007...

Bimble, Sunday, 18 March 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

The Smiths should probably be inducted, but with the American bias of the RRHOF, they seem more likely not to. Same about Stone Roses.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 19 March 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but well "Rock and Roll" is an american bias, whereas Rock Music, umm, isnt.

Mark G, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

Btw. given the American bias, Depeche Mode and The Cure may be contenders. They sure are big enough in the States.

Both have been eligible for quite some time by now though.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

King Crimson!

Isn't a Hall of Fame kind of contrary to the spirit of rock & roll to begin with?

souldesqueeze, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Forget about the original spirit of rock'n'roll. Rock deserves a history and a museum. Just because teenageers don't appreciate that doesn't mean they aren't able to appreciate it when they get older.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

It's disingenuous to claim that rock & roll is simply music for teenagers and that "rock music" is more sophisticated and mature. Its considerable artistic potential notwithstanding, rock is supposed to be about subversion and rebellion, two ideas that run counter to the notion of Kurt Cobain's smashed guitar being preserved for posterity. It just seems bloated and self-aggrandizing. I can't honestly see Iggy Pop's silver trousers behind glass. They should be balled up in a Bowery gutter.

souldesqueeze, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 09:38 (eighteen years ago)

Actually rock is supposed to be about sex.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 09:40 (eighteen years ago)

That too. :)

souldesqueeze, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

Rock isn't supposed to be anything at all. It is just a musical genre, and like all other musical genres it has its history and its canon.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

It's understandable that Geir would have trouble with the concept of sex.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

Not many musical genres are imbued with such societal baggage as rock & roll. Upon its birth in the mid-'50s, it was rightly seen as a very real threat to the complacency and institutionalism of Eisenhower America. It has gone through occasional periods of stagnation since then, only to be reborn as a vital force for each new generation that embraces it. Ragtime never carried that much weight. Neither did bluegrass. Rock most certainly has a history and a canon, but sanctifying its artifacts runs counter to its ephemeral nature.

souldesqueeze, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

Well, personally I prefer rock music when it concentrates on musical substance rather than rebellion. The idea of social rebellion is pathetic and nothing but pathetic, and it's about time it is being buried, leaving the rebellion up to politicians.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

Thus, some of the best "rock" music ever was during the symphonic rock of the early 70s. That's when rock was about music and nothing but music rather than some weird social idea.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

Like Richard Strauss, or Wagner.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

So there's no chance of Throbbing Gristle being inducted in the near future?

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

Are Johnny Hates Jazz eligible yet?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

Is Gary Glitter in with a shout?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

Well if John Peel can get in the UK Rock n Roll Hall of Fame...

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

Disproved

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh. We've obviously reached an impasse. That's fine.
