Well, there kinda needs to be one now because...
JAPANCAKES - Loveless CD (Darla: DRL188: 708527018828) $12.00EXCLUSIVE. Athens, GA's experimental, instrumental, Americana group, Japancakes cover My Bloody Valentine's classic Loveless record from start to finish with pedal steel and cello in place of vocal and lead melodies -- and without any distortion. MBV’s Loveless (Creation: 1991) remains the defining record of the genre and completely unparalleled by any artist since. This is super fun! Japancakes don't record together like other bands. They do play together but when they record in studio they do so one at a time. Each player writes their own part and adds it to the part(s) recorded previously by fellow band members. The result of this practice is that the personality of each individual player is often better captured. Each player's individual performance is strengthened by the technique. Japancakes is Eric Berg, rhythm guitar, Nick Belli, bass, Brant Rackey, drums, John Neff, pedal steel, Heather McIntosh, cello, Andy Barker, production.

And turns out there's a brief mp3 clip up for "Only Shallow," so there ya go.

you know, cello and steel guitar could work, and i guess they kinda do in the clip, but... it just sounds so pointless? and the drums are sloppy. i'm also annoyed that a band called 'japancakes' is doing this. ugh abort

Hah! I'm actually really liking this clip.

Japancakes shows up on the pedal steel thread, as I recall. As limited as they are, I like them. They are sort of conducive to a meditative state. Or pointless I guess. I think I saw a Ned review of Belmondo Blissout that got me to check them in the first place.

All part of the plot. And yeah, I did review that one some time back for the AMG.

I discovered them through a thread on music to study to. Served me well

I still listen to Belmondo; it was one of the better releases from the old Darla "Bliss Out" series. Very calming and richly verigated - their subsequent releases sound just as good.
This "Loveless"-business might not be all too rewarding, but maybe a few more folks will stumble onto what's turning out to be a nice little back catalog. Their cover of To Here Knows When makes me long for muzak (onus on "ack") -- something about the percussion, as in, they should stay far away from anything with a semmplance of a steady beat.

Am I the only one who's never realized until now that Japancakes is an anagram for "jackanapes"?
