The current Muse single breaks out into some jaw-droppingly old-school 70's metal riffing.

Soukesian, Thursday, 22 March 2007 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

A lot of these just look like metal songs as played by bands that don't typically make metal songs. 21st century schizoid man is totally a metal song. I think ozzy covered it on a recent solo album.

"Song 2" always seemed like a fair-to-middling bit of generic US hardcore, just played by some Brit-po twats twats in a commercial context where a MTV audience could actually get to hear it.

Soukesian, Thursday, 22 March 2007 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

That's Brit-pop, though Brit-po seems like a plausible new genre.

Soukesian, Thursday, 22 March 2007 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

Um, does 'Beat It' count?

Richard Graham, Friday, 23 March 2007 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

Of course it does.

I've always thought that "Glass Museum" by Tortoise was pretty metal, but I'm probably just confusing Pajo's guitar maneuvers with metal.

William Selman, Friday, 23 March 2007 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know about Say it Ain't So. But the first thing that came to my mind was "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"

xp - Pajo played bass with Early Man so he's got some hesher in him.

It occured to me that lotsa industrial bands can be used in this thread - Ministry, KMFDM and the like - but that's almost cheating.

NYCNative, Friday, 23 March 2007 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'm having difficulty working out what's so metal about Cannonball.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 23 March 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

There is nothing metal about the Cannonball riff.

Metal riffs all over that Serena Maneesh record.

"Pajo played bass with Early Man so he's got some hesher in him."

Pajo "metal" album that came out this year is probably the worst album i've heard so far this year. even worse than the new album by the weird looking guitarist dude from limp bizkit.

scott seward, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

I was quite baffled by the inital appearance of Industrial Metal - it seemed like a complete contradiction to begin with.

Osmond Brothers - "Crazy Horses"

henry s, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Does the guitar solo in "Shoplifters of the World" count?

Gendou Ikari, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Samples in hip-hop tracks a la Public Enemy's "She Watch Channel Zero" definitely is cheating however the guitar riff that starts out Paris' "The Devil Made Me Do It" is not a sample, I don't think (but could be wrong).

Radiohead - "Creep". Not exactly "metal up your ass", but that riff sure is nice and chunky.

sleestak, Thursday, 29 March 2007 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

I'm confused as to how the King Crimson song is "Non-Metal"

Bill Magill, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

That riff in "Atlantis to Interzone" by the Klaxons is a total metal riff - it's really close to "Paranoid Andriod"'s metal breakdown.

Ben Boyerrr, Friday, 30 March 2007 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Rush was metal?
