So tell me about Crawling Chaos' The Gas Chair LP

Is the rest of it anything like "Arabesque"? Because I have become totally obsessed with that song over the last few days.

Crawling Chaos = very underrated band. Both Gas Chair & Hommunculus Equinox are good, almost Fausty psyche-punk-pop

Dominique, Friday, 23 March 2007 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

Yes to all that.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 March 2007 06:17 (nineteen years ago)

Homunculus Equinox pwns The Gas Chair, which I didn't really care for that much - Arabesque notwithstanding.

I found the Sex Machine 7" for a couple of quid a few years ago :)

Colonel Poo, Friday, 23 March 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

Was their stuff ever issued on CD? Remember it getting good write-ups in ZigZag at the time, but never investigated.

Soukesian, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i think it was on some sub-label of LTM? ned? anyone?

Sure was -- I direct you to LTM.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder if anyone's heard these:

In addition to the Factory recordings, Crawling Chaos released later albums on their own Foetus Productions imprint:

C (1984)
Waqqaz (1985)

Definitely the odd men out at Factory who seemed to have no clue what to do with them. Not that anyone else would have known either. Musically they are the jokers in Factory’s black raincoat brigade. In Homunculus Equinox you get screaming synths, guitar wankery, faux-folk, and Status Quo sub-metal stupidity to great effect. Get the re-issues on LTM if your so inclined but be fore-warned they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. I like them a lot if that means anything.

"In Homunculus Equinox you get screaming synths, guitar wankery, faux-folk, and Status Quo sub-metal stupidity to great effect. "

I'm there, dude!

Soukesian, Saturday, 24 March 2007 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

All right, ordered the remastered Gas Chair, probably will end up picking up Homunculus Equinox as well soon enough. In the meantime, what exactly are the words to "Arabesque"? Sitting pretty in my ___?

Telephone thing, Saturday, 24 March 2007 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

My friend just bought a copy of "C". I told him he better fuckin' rip that shit to his computer quick.

Bimble, Saturday, 24 March 2007 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm willing to believe Homunculus is better than Gas Chair. Gas Chair would make almost anyone puke with its awfulness. I enjoyed reading a review of it which said that "anyone who could possibly interested in that shit is probably dead" or some such sentence. I mean they can't possibly be worse than that on their other records, that's my attitude.

Bimble, Saturday, 24 March 2007 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

I enjoyed reading a review of it which said that "anyone who could possibly interested in that shit is probably dead"

That's from the infamous NME review, isn't it?

Telephone thing, Saturday, 24 March 2007 06:26 (nineteen years ago)

Their version of "Taste of Honey" really gets me. I mean I guess I recognize this is like an old jazz standard or whatever, but I've downloaded the Quincy Jones version and just don't dig it as much as the CC version.

And yes, by the liner notes for Homunculus, I did mean the NME review after all.

My friend and I have gotten into a bit of a fight over the "C" LP he's got. I got all excited and wrote him an email begging him to burn it for me then he got all upset because I didn't ask him how he was doing first. I told him I'm not going to apologize just because he got suddenly insecure that I was using him. Besides I was drunk at the time and I told him that. But still...I don't understand people who don't get excited about music or who can't relate to people who get excited about music. He doesn't know jack shit about Factory or Manchester bands or even LTM or anything like that. I don't even know why he of all people ended up with this damn thing. Hell, it's probably crap anyway. What the hell. To be continued...

Bimble, Saturday, 31 March 2007 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

Eh anyone unable to understand a bit of drunken enthusiasm isn't a friend worth having! Still, good luck getting it ripped...

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 31 March 2007 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks Colonel Poo! That means a lot, especially since from what I know of your tastes and his, you'd probably have a lot in common! :)

Bimble, Saturday, 31 March 2007 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

Wow...I just listened to track #12 on this Homunculus thing (god that is so hard to spell!) it's supposed to be called "The Mongolian Steak Bar" - I listened to that in the dark just now and it scared the living bejesus out of me. I thought all the blood in my veins had turned to ice. Now that's some good music.

Bimble, Saturday, 31 March 2007 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

Bimble, it's too bad LTM didn't use the original cassette cover of Homunculus. Now that's disturbing. It's a picture of a nude masked man cutting his penis with some type of ritual knife. It looks like a voodoo or satanic ceremony. I don't know if it's real, a performance art piece, or some movie still. Who knows with these guys since one thing they never are is serious. Wish I had a way to post it.

"almost Fausty psyche-punk-pop"
or is it just an amateurish piece of trash?
a matter of pov.

Zeno, Sunday, 1 April 2007 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, can't you scan it, leavethecapitol?

I ordered my own copies of "C" & "Waqqaz". It cost me a pretty penny, but I will not be stopped! I really enjoyed Homunculus last night...just really weird music, more so than the weirdest Cabaret Voltaire, I think.

Bimble, Sunday, 1 April 2007 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

No scanner sadly.

leavethecapital, Sunday, 1 April 2007 03:47 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, but is there a copy shop nearby? I'm lucky that there's one within walking distance, though I haven't yet brought my rare LP's in there to scan.

Bimble, Sunday, 1 April 2007 03:50 (nineteen years ago)

Actually I don't know if you can scan LP's in copy shops or not. I assume you can. I would think cassette sleeves would be easy, though.

Anyway, never mind. It sounds like I'm being demanding again. Sigh.

Bimble, Sunday, 1 April 2007 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...

Check out www.crawlingchaos.co.uk for clarification of details and a full(ish) breakdown and history of the band. I've described the HE cover and the people involved in some detail. It's something that I will extend as time passes and more history is revealed, that I'm putting together.

Strangely Perfect, Sunday, 20 May 2007 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

A guy in Belgium is sending me the artwork for the HE sleeve, along with some very rare cassette releases by the band.

Bimble, Sunday, 20 May 2007 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

Stangely, thanks for posting that web address. Now I know who you guys are. The website looks good and your band history sounds like a mad cross between a Python skit and Spinal Tap.

leavethecapital, Sunday, 20 May 2007 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, loving this website as well, very informative! Post updates as you see fit!
