The "search" function" may not always work that well (via either a direct "ilx" search or a google search) but you should at least try it before posting a new question. Here is one of several threads already posted about DC bands:

Dischord c/d

curmudgeon, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

oh alright im just not used to this kind of board yet. Im usted to the standard phpbb or invision.

anthony, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Dischord wasn't the whole story, though.

Soukesian, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

Some of these are probably from places outside DC, e.g. Arlington etc, but to a Britishes it's all the same: all the early Dischord bands like S.O.A., Government Issue, Youth Brigade, VOID + Double O, Bad Brains (circa Black Dots demos), Black Market Baby. Then you've got stuff like No Trend which isn't hardcore as such but still fucking awesome. And Iron Cross who are about the only American Oi band from the early 80's that I know of that's any good.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

Bad Brains really changed everything. Key band. You cannot understate their contribution.

Soukesian, Friday, 23 March 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

There was a much longer thread on DC rock bands a little while back but the search engine is not bringing it up because it can't handle searches for short terms like "DC"

curmudgeon, Saturday, 24 March 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Was it ILX: Capital Swamp: The DC Resource Thread?

Mike Dixn, Saturday, 24 March 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, that one cover current DC bands and events...I'm talking a nostalgic one with the Faith, Bad Brains, Rites of Spring, and non-hardcore DC rock and pop

curmudgeon, Saturday, 24 March 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

I remember that damn thread also and I even tried searching for it a bit as well....

sleeve, Saturday, 24 March 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Ned suggested that I post on the Moderator Board about it, and I did so but no response there yet.

The thread included mentions of the Warmers and various others (Unrest) plus I made a reference to historical DC stuff, Mark Opsasnick's Capitol Rock book.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 24 March 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

could it have been a sandbox thread? I remember the Unrest love also.

sleeve, Saturday, 24 March 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Seems like so many good bands come out of DC. One that doesn't get enough love is Faraquet.

professor ganson, Saturday, 24 March 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

United Mutation was the only DC hardcore band that counted.

libcrypt, Saturday, 24 March 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

Void FTW

am0n, Sunday, 25 March 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

artdamages, Sunday, 25 March 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

I am pretty sure it was a big sandbox thread, and it went pretty deep... are those lost to the ether now?

Ben Boyerrr, Sunday, 25 March 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

void weren't from dc doooooooofuses! </pedant> they're the fuckin jam tho.

and yes i remember that thread. looked around the sandbox but couldn't find it there either.

pretzel walrus, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

maybe this isn't the right place to mention this, but i was thinking nation of ulysess sounds like they borrowed a good deal from the dicks. the whole garage soul thing, songs that, lyrically, seem like they were written by 13 years olds (in a good way).

artdamages, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, Void were from Columbia, Maryland, which is not that far from DC (I have fond memories of seeing them--especially that guitarist Bubba. I think he's out in LA now).

curmudgeon, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

9353 weren't strictly hardcore in the least but... wow were they great.

NYCNative, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

This just showed up in google today. Yea!

The finest products of the DC rock scene: What will be remembered/treasured?

curmudgeon, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know if I should start a new thread for this but what's up in the hardcore scene right *now*? Anything favorable?
There's some benefit show happening which prompted me to check Danke, and they seem okay, but I'm pretty clued out about the current local scene. I'm sort of fed up with the the one dimentional funpop of independent bands around here and radical or not, there was some vibe about this hardcore band member telling us about the benefit show that seemed a little more progressive in terms of attitude and moving music/using it as a tool.
I don't know, maybe not, but it prompted me to wonder if there's anything happening with the scene nowadays or if it's just tiny pockets of people doing the basement rendezvous.

and I want to hear 9353..there's a lot of yes-votes for them. I lesser of age and thus late for them and I'm kind of curious about the enthusiasm
but I can't seem to find anything anywhere.

There's a DC hardcore/indie gig e-mail list via a yahoo group: dc-baltimore-shows@yahoogroups.com; on behalf of; Pete Duvall [peted301 at yahoo.com]

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

void weren't from dc doooooooofuses! </pedant> they're the fuckin jam tho.

fuuuuuckoff XD they were part of the dc "scene", not a columbia, md one which didn't exist. nor did a rockville one for g.i. or an ashton one for no trend

am0n, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

I really should scan in my old Thrillseeker fanzines (82 to 84) (from Bowie, MD not D.C. itself!)

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

haha bad brains lived in p.g. county, so they're eliminated

am0n, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

kinda bums me out that all of these Maryland bands get the DC tag. no respect.

though i suppose 'banned in pg county' doesn't quite sound as potent.

oh no totally yr right, they were part of the dc scene and all that but since they're the only fucking thing of musical worth to ever come from my town it makes me cry when they get tagged as a dc band

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

The Scream (pre- Dave Grohl) were originally from Bailey's Crossroads (part of Falls Church near Alexandria and Arlington). I remember they used to write B X R on stuff.

kinda bums me out that all of these Maryland bands get the DC tag. no respect.

Straight up though, the Columbia, Maryland hardcore scene was like playing in a basement with Christmas lights and if the drummer had a nice mom, she'd bake cookies for you.

kkvgz, Monday, 18 April 2011 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

looks like that other thread curmudgeon found up above is a 404 now, any ideas on how to get to it?

"While organizing the Dischord archive, we came across the 4-track of Void's first recording session. This was done with Steve Carr at Hit and Run Studios in November '81 and never released (though there has been at least one bootleg made from a cassette of the original mix). The master tape was nowhere to be found, so the tape was remixed by Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara at Inner Ear earlier this year. It was like digging through a treasure chest! Hearing embryonic versions of what would become Void classics as well as songs that didn't make the cut made it clear just how driven this band was to capture their own sound. Sessions 1981-1983 features the entire Hit and Run session along with the first Inner Ear Demo (including the Flex Your Head cuts and the songs that ended up on the Condensed Flesh 7"), two out-takes from their second Inner Ear session, and a couple of live recordings including one that I think must be the last song they ever played."

one year passes...

Has a single other poster on ILM ever heard Four Walls Falling? Search results yield nada. But these guys, from Richmond, Virginia (my hometown), active from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s, produced absolutely impeccable shit. Their full-length Food For Worms from '94 is one of, if not THE, finest "post-hardcore" record I've ever heard.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 31 October 2012 01:40 (thirteen years ago)

Stumped me on that one

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 11:25 (thirteen years ago)

bought the CD issue of 'Culture Shock' which I believe is their first album for pennies years ago and found it to be a rly solid example of a kind of HC I don't listen to much. not investigated anything else though

Joanna Motorhead (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 11:44 (thirteen years ago)

Sam McPheeters just linked this story on Facebook http://www.nola.com/treme-hbo/index.ssf/2012/09/chris_coy_joins_treme_cast_to.html and added:

"For those of you familiar with AC Thompson from his nationally recognized investigative journalism, this is a wild turn of events. For those of us who remember him from early-90’s Richmond hardcore band Device, this raises the professional jealousy bar to dangerous new heights."

those dudes on your radar Clarke?

Joanna Motorhead (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

(according to this old msgboard thread) they were actually from DC but tight-ish w/ 4 Walls Falling so there you are I guess?

Joanna Motorhead (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 31 October 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

Ah, don't remember Device actually... I was born in '80, so those guys were just a little before my time. So were 4 Walls, sort of, but a few of my older pals did see their last show in Richmond in (I think) '94. My 4 Walls love was exclusively through slightly older pals in early HS.

I did find one link online with a few tracks from Food For Worms... Culture Shock is a pretty solid record with some really memorable tracks, but Worms was a real change in direction. Here's the link, plus some words from the blog. I'd start with "Fall of Rome"...

http://coregasm.blogspot.com/2006/03/4-walls-falling-food-for-worms.html

"When I first heard the final CD from 4 Walls Falling my first response was not a favorable one. Maybe it was because it was a lot more slowed down, the songs were pushing the 4-7 minute mark, and overall it was a lot more experimental for the band at the time. It wasn't until a few years later did I pop it on and had the thought of "What the hell was I smoking, this shit is amazing!" I guess it just wasn't the right time beforehand for me to get it. That happens sometimes. Maybe it happened with a lot of people because it didn't seem like this record was really talked about much. It might not have helped that I think this only came out on a European label. Distro in the US was pretty abysmal for this release. I had a hard time picking 3 tracks to feature."
