I'd say better than Picaresque. and Picaresque is decent.

one of the tracks is very reminiscent of B&S's Boy with the Arab Strap tho! Think it's Crane Wife 2.

I like this record. I keep hearing it in coffee shops (or, well, one coffee shop, really, but still). I mean, it may well be one of those records that I always will hear in coffee shops and think marvelous but somehow feel no need to own. Then again, the prog heaviness here and there is super nice. All dark and creamy like Deep Purple. Unexpected.

It's much better than Picaresque. Picaresque was lame.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

Picaresque had better songs and punchier arrangements - even if "Mariner's Revenge Song" incites killing rage. "Summersong", "Shankhill Butchers" and "Crane Wife pt 2" (yes, specifically that part) are by far their worst songs ever.

Simon H., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Picaresque had two (2) good songs - the excellent "On the Bus Mall" and "The Bagman's Gambit." The rest was a weak mishmash that demonstrates well that more doesn't always equal better. Crane Wife is much more streamlined and effective in general. But Shankill Butchers is lame, and so is When the War Came. Summersong is rather bland, too. I think The Island is rather excellent.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

And I'm not sure what was "punchy" about Picaresque. Mostly it seemed to me like excessive layering for layering's sake topped with too much compression.

way better than the last one, not as good as the first one, maybe on par with the second; maybe they'll get better, but I feel like maybe they should break up now
