Gwen Stefani "The Sweet Escape"

I had an urge to buy a mainstream pop CD so I bought this. I'm really not sure what to think about it, but without being sure, I think it's a fat pile of crap.

Is this going to grow on me or is it as annoying as it sounds?

Surmounter, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

I like the title track.

marmotwolof, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

it is really annoying and awful, except 'early winter', which is great.

lex pretend, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

fergie's album on the other hand sounds like the second album everyone expected gwen to make (ie awesome in a batshit kind of way).

lex pretend, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

like i really almost feel sick in a way.

Surmounter, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

The title track is phenomenal, otherwise...

The Brainwasher, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

As much as I liked her first one, I haven't brought myself to touch this one.

And the title track suxxorz, Akon is more annoying than Akon's ever been.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

yeah totally, and i actually never find akon particularly annoying! but this song kind of yo-yos really insistently and gratingly on the same two notes.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 07:47 (nineteen years ago)

How are you people surprised the record is annoying. Her records have always been annoying!

Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

are you implying that you found B-A-N-A-N-A-S slightly irritating matt?!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:38 (nineteen years ago)

I like the "WOOOOHOOOO, YEEEEHOOOO" part, it's really just the verses that irritate the shit out of me. Strangely enough, though, "Wind It Up" actually kinda grew on me.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

Both of the first 2 singles are kinda mixed bags. That yodeling on "Wind It Up" was annoying, and "The Sweet Escape" similarly has catchy and bothersome aspects.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but all of us 20 or 30 something white guys aren't really her target market. It's admirable for what it is: a sickly sweet pop confection. I think both of her albums may well stand up in the future as great pop records, because I don't think they'll be dated. You may grow sick of hearing them, but I think it will have the same positives/negatives in 10-20 years. Particularly if the current collapse of the full length-album and move to digital single sales (i.e. pop hits) keeps happening in the record biz.

MC, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

yeah you 30-something white guys like the lex, matt dc and rodney need to step off

and what, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

never never never could i think of this as a great pop record. the songs just aren't good enough, and the production makes my stomach turn.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Particularly if the current collapse of the full length-album and move to digital single sales (i.e. pop hits) keeps happening in the record biz.

...

l.a.m.b. is already a great pop record. the sweet escape is half-assed & very annoying stuff gwen scrounged off the first album's cutting-room floor. (apart from 'early winter'!)

even my coming round to the yodelling on 'wind it up' didn't help matters as it only revealed how BORING the verses are.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Kind of looking forward to her mentoring on American Idol tonight.

darin, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

You're right: way too crazy to imagine Sweet Escape a great pop record. It is a step down from lamb, but quite frankly I think the Gwen backlash has been a bit harsh.

MC, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

There was this rumour earlier from ILX about tonight's Idol:

And someone posted this on the Idol board (from some actual blog) - I doubt it's true, but it would be awesome if it were:
"Sanjaya Malakar - He wanted to sing "Spoiler". She tried to get him to sing some 80's song. He said he was a big fan and he really wanted to do one of her songs. Gwen was upfront with him and told him she didn't think he could pull it off but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Today after seeing how rehearsals were going, she didnt' see any progress. She went to Nigel immediately and told him she does not want Sanjaya singing one of her songs whatsoever. Sanjaya didn't have many options at that point. He kind of got stuck with "Spoiler". This caused a big scene at the studio and was the talk all afternoon."

MC, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

It's sweet revenge for what she did to "It's My Life".

Nicole, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

yeah you 30-something white guys like the lex, matt dc and rodney need to step off

WTF? I am most definitely not a 30-something white guy! I hit the big 4-oh last November. Get with it.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
It's really disappointing how this album kinda slid in unannounced, the last one felt like such an event, and even though I haven't actually heard the thing the title track is really the only thing I'm happy to hear on the radio these last few days, and I have hated anything Akon-related until now. What's this shit about the Fergie thing being good? The singles so far have made me ill.

I know, right?, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but all of us 20 or 30 something white guys aren't really her target market

I'd guess her target market is all of us who loved the first solo album. And compared to that, this one doesn't hold a candle.

the Dirt, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the first two Fergie singles quite a bit, the last two, on the other hand, are incredibly tepid.

The Reverend, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I should add the qualifying statement that "London Bridge" and "Fergalicious", while good, aren't nearly as excellent as "My Humps".

The Reverend, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

but really, what could ever be?

(i love the last two ferg singles far more than the first two, and i loved the first two!)

lex pretend, Sunday, 6 May 2007 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

FERGIE SUCKS. She's like the female Akon (but thankfully I haven't heard her do any guest spots).

And Stefani's album mostly sucks. I liked "Yummy" last year, but it sounds stale to me now. And "Wind It Up" has always been terrible. Didn't Gwen actually say that the album was shit? Or was the local radio personality lying?

Tape Store, Sunday, 6 May 2007 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Fergie's album is far better than this, so long as Will.i.am does not rap.

Rowlando, Sunday, 6 May 2007 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

She's like the female Akon (but thankfully I haven't heard her do any guest spots)

new daddy yankee single :D

lex pretend, Sunday, 6 May 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Nice

But I don't think I can find any common ground on this Fergie thing, they're so smug garish and just ugh. Glamorous and London Bridge in particular piss. me. off. But I love this Sweet Escape single, and I was pretty sold on Wind it Up straight away, but it never became infections or anything. I'm just disapointed that this album isn't really an event like I feel it should be. Does that make sense?

I know, right?, Sunday, 6 May 2007 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

OH NOES

I bet it sounds like every other Daddy Yankee single.

Tape Store, Sunday, 6 May 2007 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Hahaha, Ramzi! I thought this was going to be a thread where you said you loved this and I was like "eeew". Hahahahahah. HI DERE

Bimble, Sunday, 6 May 2007 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

lol ummm no ; )

there are some things that i love, even though they're like, incredibly cheesy. but this, noperooni

Fergalicious>Glamorous>The Sweet Escape>4 In The Morning>London Bridge>Impacto>My Humps>Big Girls Don't Cry>Wind It Up

i really shoulda just bought the beyonce album

Surmounter, Monday, 7 May 2007 01:31 (nineteen years ago)

This is true.

Tape Store, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

Indeed.

The Reverend, Monday, 7 May 2007 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

Most of the 13-year-old girls at my son's Bar Mitzvah party over the weekend liked when the dj played "The Sweet Escape," as did I. The Bar Mitzvah boy played it cool and did not let on his thoughts on that number.

curmudgeon, Monday, 7 May 2007 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

"The Sweet Escape" is one of those songs where the verses are really terrible (especially that bit where she semi-raps argh) but the chorus is lovely! Everytime I hear it on the radio, I always think it sucks, and then find myself singing along.

Roz, Monday, 7 May 2007 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

hahahahahahahaha... well u know, sometimes u have to be reeeallly ugly before you can be beautiful

Surmounter, Monday, 7 May 2007 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

u should still buy the beyonce album, they've just released a deluxed edition of it with some awesome videos and a really good new ballad called 'if' and uh 'beautiful liar'.

lex pretend, Monday, 7 May 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

cool yeah i think i'm gonna get it

I love Gwen so much – I don't even have a sense of smell but I kind of want her perfume.

breaking that little dog's heart chakra (Abbott), Friday, 11 June 2010 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

weirdly enough, i have developed a strong affection for her as well.

i heard that song " i know we're cool " on the radio the other day -- i think it's just called " cool "

it's fuckin great. seems to have been designed to recall something from like 1985
