POV: Ludacris

Asking largely because I've been getting back into Luda's singles but have no idea where (if anywhere) to begin on his other cuts. My personal list could vary wildly depending on mood, but:

1) Southern Hospitality - especially the video version with the "We drop 'bows on 'em" intro/outro. #1 in any version though. The best kind of "Dirty South" - filthy but friendly, a spooky delivery of charming material. Cadillac grills, cadillac mills, check out the oil my cadillac SPILLS - pure lyrical bliss.
2) Roll Out - Feels a little bit dated now, a little thin and shiny, but still, wow, probably the best brag-track of newly-acquired stardom ever.
3) Hip-Hop Quotables - Discovered thanks to the "hilariously genius rap lyrics" thread and it deserves the nod despite some dud moments. Another great opener: Hi, my name's Ludacris and I'm high as giraffe butts....
4) Stand Up - Heard this recently on an amazing little 2003 time-capsule mix CD I made and it's still pretty much the hottest track I've heard since it came out. Wow.
5) Saturday (Oooh Oooh) - Gotta be one of his most varied and inventive deliveries - really packing in the syllables where it counts, and relaxing to take in the glory of a big ol' aaaaaaaaass. Also, the only hip-hop track I've ever attempted to perform at karaoke besides "The Humpty Dance"!

I go back and forth on "Get Back," which I really hated and found sort of phony at first, but have come to appreciate for its moments of everyman relatability beneath the bluster - Can't you see we in the club man, shut the fuck up! I will never accept "Splash Waterfalls" or "Runaway Love"; the guy is a long way from convincing me with any sort of heavy/serious song.

Honorable Mention ties between his two big Missy guest raps, "One Minute Man" and "Gossip Folks." Would also love to spark discussion about all his really minor, seemingly instantly-forgotten singles e.g. "Diamond In The Front," "Act A Fool," "Number One Spot" - Brush my shoulder and I / Pop my collar / Cause I'm worth a million, gazillion, fulfillion dollars. - dunno the right thread format to really delve into that stuff though.

the lame Redman/Timbo single makes you realize how Ludacris really took his place

deej, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha true.

I miss Redman being the best rapper ever.

Tim F, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

I've always thought of him as more the new version of Busta Rhymes - great for a single or cameo, but about intolerable for a whole lp.

Back when Bus was still tolerable for a single or cameo, anyway.
