Sorry - ignore those spaces in between the three answers.

darin, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 07:42 (eighteen years ago)

wtf with these choices. over $50.00.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 07:55 (eighteen years ago)

$50 is about £26, right? I spend that pretty much every week, at least.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 08:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think a new poll with more choices would be better.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I could spend £26 on music in a week, easily. Also, is this just buying albums, or going to gigs, etc.?

Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

ok i thought the options were a little low but £26 a WEEK?!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

quite apart from anything else that's, what, easily three and probably more albums...on top of what i d/l, get sent and already have i would never have the time to listen to it all.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

You've heard of "Fifty Quid Man"?

HI DERE!

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think it's a stretch to say that I spend £100 a month on music on average; on CDs, on gig tickets (although I blag most gigs these days, not that I go to many), on equipment. I earn about £17k a year, which isn't much, but music's my main hobby/passion/interest. I know people who earn less than me and spend more than I do on music on getting drunk every month.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

I don't download anything apart from promos loaded onto the Stylus staff page - so this week I downloaded the Wilco, for instance. Even from that stuff I only download about 10% of what gets uploaded. I am very much no longer interested in hearing as much as possible.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still very interested in hearing as much new music as possible but not necessarily in spending money on it. Others have said that 2007 is a boom year for albums thus far but from my perspective if it carries on like this my CoM EOY list is going to struggle to get to a top ten, never mind a top 50.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

marcello it's only march. nothing has ever happened by march. no albums have totally blown me away yet - though five or six Very Good ones have emerged, and plenty of amazing singles.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

Who the fuck is darin?

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

No bcos Bobby Darin was good.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

I am possibly a little too organized and track all my expenses in some detail, so I can report with some confidence that I've spent £1483.97 on music in the last three months. I think I may have a problem.

Kaliova, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder who has spent the most on downloads. I'm on between £40 and £50 so far this year I think.

blueski, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

I spend, what, £8.99 a month on downloads? (emusic) I pretty much only use it to test / sample stuff though. If I really like it, I'll buy the CD. I've just queued up two old Boredoms albums (Pop Tatari and Chocolate Synthesizer) that I can't easily get in physical format.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

do you keep the mp3s you pay for nick?

blueski, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

Um, I have no idea. I deleted something I downloaded on spec a bit ago cos it was rubbish, but most things if I think they're OK, yeah, I'll leave them on the iPod (which I pretty much use just as a repository for new music and key favourites). If I like something enough to buy it, I might keep the MP3s on the iPod rather than delete only to re-rip later on from the CD if I get a hankering for, I dunno, Strange Geometry on the train. I'm pretty fucking brutal and unsentimental when it comes to file management and back-up on my computers though - I figure if something is worth keeping for ever I'd have it physically (this includes photographs, documents, etcteera) - and deleting MP3s, even bought ones from emusic, causes me no pain whatsoever.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Last month I spent around $150 (I wonder why I'm broke now?), on average it's around $75/month.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah £26 a week isn't so much, especially if you buy 12"s (worst habit to pick up)

resolved, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

last year's total purchases was 144 things (a 'thing' ranges from single mp3 to a 3cd box set but the mean is probably somewhere between a 12" and a album*) (plus 10+ cover mounted cds plus a bunch of free downloads (vvm365 anyone?)).

*1292 tracks according to a quick query. is probably more than that because i deleted a couple of mixes for space reasons

this year, so far, i am up to 15.

koogs, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

3 months? I dunno ... $1,000 or so.

Pye Poudre, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry guys - I was kind of drunk when I started this last night and didn't really think things through beforehand. Fifty dollars was kind of an arbitrary amount. The recent threads on the music industry sales made me curious if the purchase patterns of the more hardcore music fans has really changed.

darin, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, I bittorrent maybe 10 new albums a month, buy 6-8 used. Very very rarely do I buy new stuff these days.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and Noodle Vague - don't worry I'm not a narc or anything, just another jackass who's been posting on ILM for the last three years.
