The Kristeen Young in question. Not the Canadian one.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

i'm debating whether i should admit that i know who that is, but i think i'll pretend to be ignorant. hmmm, canadian porn star you say?

scott seward, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently been at it for a while -- some of these reviews are from 1999.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

First things that went through my mind as soon as I saw this thread...

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I heard a couple of the earlier albums, and the "Kate Bush fronting Metallica" description is lazy. She's more from the Toyah/new-wave-thrush camp and like young singer with a wide vocal range, she's determined to use all of it in one song (if not in the same verse). Her stuff gets more focused as you move forward chronologically (look for the stuff she's recorded with Tony Visconti) and I'm vaguely interested in what her new album would sound like.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

I bought "Orphans" after seeing a few songs on youtube. I like it, though I suspect many here are going to loathe her.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

The Guardian had some photo/feature a month or so ago where famous people pimped their "protogees," and the accompanying pic had Morrissey hoisting her over his shoulders. Then her quote in the piece was something like "taking that photo was the first time he's ever touched me."

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

the Visconti connection is the obvious giveaway here.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

did someone say "breasticles?"

zaxxon25, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Huh?

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

She looks like a bizarre hybrid of Nelly Furtado and Peaches.

Tantrum The Cat, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Who's going to what dates?

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 31 March 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to the Boston show on June 26th.

ENBB, Saturday, 31 March 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

Uhm, has anyone read her lyrics?

Fanboy 3, Saturday, 31 March 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Yep: "Forget the Gang of Four - [sneer] it's not hard" Got to love her for that.

Soukesian, Saturday, 31 March 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a problem with anything else she's said?

Been listening to 'Orphans' quite a bit recently. It's great, though perhaps a little overproduced for my tastes. The Kate Bush influence is there, down to some toe-curling 80's synth sounds, but Metallica certainly aren't audible, nor NIN or Killing Joke, who I've also seen mentioned. She reminds me of PJ Harvey and Amanda Palmer in places. I'm keen to hear her earlier stuff.

Soukesian, Saturday, 31 March 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

This quote from Morrissey's Guardian piece appeared in Private Eye's Pseuds Corner this week:

"Do you remember an ancient notion of how good the very best should be? This is Kristeen Young. She uses her keyboard as a highly trained Nazi might use an electronic rod for shocking the parts...The voice is a beautiful bayonet, and the life swills out in song - 'Strangle Bowie with/his neckerchief' she sings in Kill The Father - but with a heart big enough to trot horses on it."
