max, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

no MCR?

nervous, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

as good as MCR is, they're not better than any of the bands on the list

max, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

objectively

max, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't know the spin doctors were from new jersey.

what about southside johnny, rorshach, and garden variety?

QuantumNoise, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Dalek?

Samski, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

only because i'm listening to them right now...

Samski, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

dionne warwick
lesley gore
naughty by nature
my chemical romance
the feelies
monster magnet
thursday
the smithereens
southside johnny
skid row
etc blah blah blah etc

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

feelies was the first band to spring to my mind.

Mike McGooney-gal, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

naughty by nature, the feelies, and skid row deserve to be on my list. i have thursday.

max, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

No Frankie Ruiz?

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

I would have voted for MCR ahead of everyone on this list except maybe Redman.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

mcr is emphatically not better than lifetime, kid dynamite, or thursday

max, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

The Feelies by miles.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Forgot some more:

The Wrens
Pink
Ashley Tisdale
Pete Yorn
Donald Fagen

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

danleson. jk i picked misfits.

chaki, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

Tom Verlaine, too.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

i left off ppl who were born in nj but usually associated with other places (except shaq)--like ice-t and rah digga and wyclef and lauryn hill

max, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

I take back Pink, she's from Pennsylvania

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

The Feelies, by hundreds of miles.

Or George Clinton.

dlp9001, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

i left off ppl who were born in nj but usually associated with other places

Oh that's why you left of Frankie Ruiz then.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 29 March 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

I'd protest the absence of Monster Magnet but their discog is kind of hit-or-miss. the early stuff is manna from heaven.

Edward III, Thursday, 29 March 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

P-Funk wins this thread in tremendous fashion.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 March 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe nobody's repping Count Basie in this bitch.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 29 March 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

I love Basie, but I associate him with KC.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 March 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

True enough, but he is from Jersey.

/pedantry

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 29 March 2007 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

yo la tengo. no contest.

davie, Thursday, 29 March 2007 03:13 (eighteen years ago)

Right, I was responding to both you and "i left off ppl who were born in nj but usually associated with other places"

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 March 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

point taken.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 29 March 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

Mark G, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Parliafunkdelicment should deffo be on there!!!!

Tom D., Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

i considered it--but i believe that only george is actually from new jersey and in any event parliament the band (not the parliaments, who are from NJ) was formed in detroit

max, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

should kramer be included, even though he's a producer?

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Wrong. All of the original band are from Plainfield, NJ - the Parliaments, who ended up as "Parliament", plus the musicians who became Funkadelic: Billy Nelson, Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, Tawl Ross, Garry Shider

Tom D., Thursday, 29 March 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

The Feelies.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 29 March 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Swingin' Neckbreakers

MC, Thursday, 29 March 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

jeez tom ok--i still wouldnt think of parliament-funkadelic as a "nj band," considering that the move from "the parliaments" to "funkadelic" occured in detroit at westbound

max, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

The whole band is from NJ but their record company is in Detroit and so they're disqualified! Harsh!

Tom D., Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

start your own poll

max, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

DISSENSION IS KILLING ILM

Edward III, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

feelies for me. though i do love misfits.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

"like ice-t and rah digga and wyclef and lauryn hill"

ice-t is from summit! i think. that's where my dad grew up. very hoity toity.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

waht about gandalf?

ian, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

I think Ice is from Newark, but now lives in Summit.

max, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

i thought he grew up in summit.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

okay, wiki sez he was born in newark and he now lives in north bergen. i could have sworn i read somewhere that he grew up in summit. i mean, i still remember it, so it stuck out.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

okay, wiki for summit has the info:

Rapper Ice-T resided in Summit as a child, on Park Avenue. He attended the Brayton Elementary School, and moved to Los Angeles to live with family members after the death of his parents.

he probably just tells people it was newark. summit is way snooty white people land.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

what, no feelies or spiral jetty?

theoreticalgirl, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

everyone has been saying feelies even though it's not on the poll.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

i shouldn't say that about summit. i'm sure it's nice. that was just the impression i always got driving thru with my dad.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

yeah Summit's pretty rich; it wouldn't be impossible to be poor there, though. It's certainly not Newark.

max, Thursday, 29 March 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

No love for Wayne Shorter, Larry Young or Bill Evans?

My vote goes to Trixter

Johnny Hotcox, Thursday, 29 March 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

Connie Francis for this album alone.

zaxxon25, Friday, 30 March 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

It's a difficult choice between Frankie, The Four Seasons and Parliament/Funkadelic

Tom D., Friday, 30 March 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Frank, though yeah . . . Bruce, the almighty Feelies and the Four Seasons -- heck.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 31 March 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Count Basie had a pretty good showing.

max, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

New Jersey girls aren't trash!

NYCNative, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

So, apparently lots more love for Spin Doctors than for Bon Jovi on ILM.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

i missed this thread! ;_; ;_;

good thing though ... i would've just bitched about naughty by nature & the fugees not being on the list.

Eisbaer, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

I missed it too. P-Funk got robbed, I've always thought of them as a Plainfield crew, all their main guys were from there. Also, Summit's posh. Billionaire Gov. Corzine lives there.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

haha i forgot that P-Funk are also Jersey boys. so, them too!

also, Gov. Corzine lives in Hoboken nowadays. Eli Manning, Artie Lange & Kanye West are his neighbors.

Eisbaer, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

wtf Bon Jovi playing 10 nights at the Prudential wtf

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

xpost My band got kicked out of the Monroe Center so they could build a cigar bar/restaurant hangout for Corzine and his cronies.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot Corzine got divorced. His wife probably owns the Manse.

Bon Jovi hasn't been able to sell out the Pru, now he and the Devils have egg on their faces for booking him (them) for so many nights.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

Also missing:

Marc Ribot (born in Newark)
PM Dawn (formed in Jersey City)

o. nate, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

blaze

elan, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Ha.

Srsly they're no Springsteen - did they really think people would come multiple nights to sing along again to the same five songs? (xpost)

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

"Thankya. Thankya ver'much!"

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, and fuck Bruce Springsteen!

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

You couldn't pay me to see either act.

Sounds like the height of hubris on Bon Jovi's part.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

bonjovi has ALWAYS been arrogant, though! i remember a funny story from a college acquaintance about when bonjovi moved next door to his uncle in some hoity-toity Monmouth County suburb or other. not even the most blinged-out chart-topping rapper could match bonjovi's ego.

that said, 20 years ago bonjovi probably COULD have sold out 10 nights at the Pru. he WAS that big back then, sadly.

Eisbaer, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, fuck bon jovi for trying to make the big new urban revival project a success

gabbneb, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

they would have made it more of a success if they had booked fewer shows and sold them out

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it's not their intention that matters

i might go to one of the big and rich shows

gabbneb, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Totally not OTM and missing the point. You're assuming this arena's success will line people's pockets other than the Devils and Goldman Sachs. There's been nothing to prove that these new urban arenas alleviate poverty in any way. Plus, I don't think anybody is cutting down Bon Jovi for wanting to play there-it's just hubristic to think he's relevant enough any more to sell out 10 dates at an unproven venue.

xpost

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

all I'm assuming is that boosterism is the reason the dude chose the venue (as opposed to, you know, the meadowlands, where I'll bet the ticket sales would have been stronger)

gabbneb, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

for the last time im sorry i left off the fucking feelies

max, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)
