Are you guys into The Residents?

They're my favorite band ever. I only got into them pretty recently, around the time Animal Lover was released. But I think I know basically all their is to know, besides their actual identities. I've got some ultra-rare mp3's, including a track from the unreleased Mole trilogy album, if anyone's interested.

From a recent update on their website, it seems that they might be going on their last tour soon :(. Can't really blame them, they must be in their 60's by now.

We had an old Residents thread but it looks like Google ate it. I like Duck Stab/Buster & Glen and Commercial Album. Haven't heard the rest.

Hi, I'm into the Residents. Eskimo is the name of my favourite record by them.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite's always gonna be The Big Bubble. Demons Dance Alone probably comes in second, that album REALLY grew on me over time...probably the only recording that's ever made me so emotional that I cried.

theoreo, Friday, 30 March 2007 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

woah...that's...weird.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Big Bubble is the closest they got to the Birthday Party

sexyDancer, Friday, 30 March 2007 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

i really like ROADWORMS the live version of the WORMWOOD stuff with live drums and guitar. but i cant find it anywhere :(

chaki, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

I got a crude version of "Rest Aria" from Meet the Residents on my myspace if you dudes wanna hear it.

Big Bubble is the closest they got to the Birthday Party

haha otm

your grand piano sounds just like theirs, tim

god bless internet for spreading 'wb album' and 'baby sex' & even all the pre-72 one mic-in-the-room hootenanny stuff

Milton Parker, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

Milton, did you know Rather Ripped Records on Euclid in Berkeley? Isn't there some Residents connection?

xpost they played there I think? closed the year before I moved to bay area.

good to hear people are getting into them through recent albums. everything from 1971-1980 is 100% gold, and many moments worth searching out on the laters.

Milton Parker, Friday, 30 March 2007 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Have found it difficult to properly appreciate these Residents. I genuinely enjoy some of the early records (Meet the Residents, Eskimo, Duck Stab, Commercial Alb.), but have a very hard time with stuff like the Mole Trilogy and the covers albums. After they went all 80s synth-y & theatrical w/ God In Three Persons, I lost track. Have friends who swear by and obsessively collect EVERYTHING to this very day, but I can't muster more than polite bafflement. Agree that Demons Dance Alone is a standout in the recent catalog, and surprisingly moving to boot (esp. with the full visual presentation).

i feel like I should like them, but don't have the time to investigate. recommend something. whatever I heard in the past didn't stick with me

akm, Friday, 30 March 2007 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

listen to "somethin' devilish"

that should stick with ya ;)

theoreo, Friday, 30 March 2007 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

they recently did this weird radio-show kinda thing my Residents-obsessed friend burned for me. I the early stuff gives me a chuckle, in a way, and I appreciate Eskimo and some of their Elvis record, I mean that guy intoning "Viva Las Vegas" should've made it onto the Casino soundtrack. but I just find it all not very good, try as I might I perceive no musicality and no point to most of it, and their visuals are embarrassingly awful. I could hear that guy's voice in front of something played by people who actually seemed to care about music, but they don't, so it's a joke, and their cult remains happy.

Never managed to get hold of Eskimo, but I love Meet the Residents, and random bits of other stuff I've heard.

A friend of mine apparently knows the daughter of one of them, and has served him whilst working in a restaurant. I imagine they're just quite ordinary really.

ILX: Are you guys IN the Residents?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 31 March 2007 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Aw c'mon Edd, who doesn't "care about music"? The Residents themselves or their cult? (Or lukewarm destroy-everything-after-1980 fans like myself?)

xpost (Nice to have the "Other messages have been posted since..." warning back!)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Saturday, 31 March 2007 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Satisfaction = best cover ever.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 31 March 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

i once was hanging with kramer ('80s producer) and a few people visiting from s.f. and we went to chinatown and talked fancy books, it was fun. afterwards, kramer turned to me and said "those people were the residents!" it was awesome.

ESKIMO has always been my favorite record by them...

Mike McGooney-gal, Saturday, 31 March 2007 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

I saw them on the Cube-E tour; amazing show.

unperson, Saturday, 31 March 2007 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

I saw that tour too. "Intermission" is my favourite of the approx 6 albums I've got. I relaly like "Eskimo" too. I don't like their recent stuff AT ALL. All that stuff that some people are saying on the Arcade Fire thread about the new album being too "knowing" applies to the late period Residents X 25.

Will never forget the Cube:E show & never liked the later (90's & 00's) material either. Snakefinger is also mesmerizng. Have been downloading a lot of Dick Vaughn etc. tapes, turns out I had some of the classics. Eeeleven. Can be plain boring too. Never heard "The Big Bubble" so off to s1sk I go...

blunt, Sunday, 1 April 2007 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

I love their vision, their taste, their concept. Original, top-notch. They're artists as well as craftsmen.

Having said that, I have to say that they often can't come up with musical ideas. Which is frustrating since they often CAN. It seems like there is a lot of filler.

Rich Smörgasbord, Sunday, 1 April 2007 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

i catch them everytime i can and actually travel to other cities to see them. im like a fucking deadhead with them. anyway the best album is NOT AVAILABLE.

chaki, Sunday, 1 April 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

the residents to play Berkeley in June (for $5!)
http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/about/late

i don't love 'em, but enjoy some of their stuff a fair bit. no way can i resist seeing them for such a nice price

If you can believe your eyes and ears (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

that music programming at Berkeley Art Museum has been one of the best series to happen to bay area music in a long time

so far, the Terry Riley / Ellen Fullman / Caroliner / Willie Winant / Carl Stone shows have all been amazing, and I'm definitely going to Laetitia Sonami & Eats Tapes
