The Affectionate Punch

Its a gloomy cold day. I'm browsing I love Music and listening to the lovely sound of Billy McKenzie. He (and ILM!) raises my spirits immensely! I really think "Deeply Concerned" is the most rommantic sound ever, a lovely baritone voice, beautiful fugue piano. I used to love "Sulk" but now this is my favourite. Fourth Drawer down is a very different sound, verry like Bowie I think, but still fascinating. Its a real grower. Does anyone have any stories of the Associates, have seen them in concert, has loved their music? It would be very interesting for me to hear this as I think they are perhaps neglected when people mention classic groups...

Associates mentions and threads have cropped up here quite a bit, so you're not alone there, Liliya! Count me in as one of the converted -- never got to see them live or anything, too young and too far away, and only saw them there Legendary Top of The Pops Performances in snippets thanks to the BBC program that ran on Mackenzie back in 2000. But I stumbled across the Popera compilation in 1993 used, gave it a whirl, and have slowly but surely tried to track down everything else since then, including obscurer stuff like the Paul Haig/BM collaboration album. Lovedrunk, dramatic, tender and close, it's all there in his music, beautifully so. Alas, right now I don't have Affectionate -- but has it been finally rereleased?

No it hasn't, I've got a vinyl copy but not heard it yet.
A double CD of 'Perhaps' and 'The Glamour Chase' is out on Monday (15th), last I heard.

I've got both and haven't heard either. Which is really stupid.

''and only saw them there Legendary Top of The Pops Performances in snippets thanks to the BBC program that ran on Mackenzie back in 2000.''

I taped a performance of 'Country Club' on top of the pops 2. It'excellent. I usually don't believe in all that stuff abt 'charisma' and 'personality' (they are usually media creations) but there was something to that. And sulk is a brilliant pop album (I don't have that many pop records at home but that performance made mecheck it out).

three weeks pass...
the original affectionate punch (black/white cover) is awesome! why it has never been reissued on CD is a mystery..The second version (colour sleeve) has been reissued but is not a good as the band remoxed and re-recorded the tracks adding an awful funk bass and various effects..the songs still stand up but the originals production was much better..seek out the original of hassle fiction to reissue the first version with extra tracks!!

To put it mildly. If only, if only.

also, i realised today i've been listening to the 82 re-recording of this LP and not realising it. It's always sounded great to me, but need to track down the original LP now...

You do indeed, it's been reissued a couple of times.

The original version is where it’s at.

i lost my tape of the re-recording but it was the first way I heard the album and I enjoyed it more than the original

I had the remixed version first but once I got the original I don't think I ever went back to the remix. They butchered some of those songs.
