I have to DJ next week, I'm headlining and I'm utterly uninspired - recommendations please, all styles!

Just so long as they'll get people up and dancing (I'm one of those false-ass MP3 DJs with semi-clever mixing trickery) I need to know!

Cheers!

Crying by Instant Funk.

jim, Sunday, 1 April 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

Listening to Depeche Mode - Violater now (after a LONG time of listening all the way through) and all I can think of, is how, for me, since it came out, it has been a consistent crowd pleaser. I remember being somewhere when just about any faster track came on when people MOVED and GROOVED - it came out when I was finishing college and I've heard it during a party or bbq or dance club, etc. every year since - and I've always seen smiles.

i'm dj'ing tonight too! i'm only playing gospel and '60s garage rock. people do dance to both of those you know. just play all of "black monk time" and head down to the dance floor yourself and dance along!

Ungena Za Ulimwengu (Unite The World) by the Temptations

Every time I DJ (which is not very often), it is the Chills' Pink Frost that always gets people asking what it is.

Keith, Sunday, 1 April 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

what is the point of DJing at all if you have others pick out what you play? what fun!!

babedad, Sunday, 1 April 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ummmm... Surely the point of this board is to discuss music and to find out about new stuff? I've heard half these songs already but they're good choices that I wouldn't have normally have thought about and the point is my music collection is exhausted and I've played all the stuff I normally play umpteen times and I'm looking for new ideas. Nothing wrong with that is there?

the next grozart, Sunday, 1 April 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

there are so many "dance recommendations" threads for you to dig through

not to mention there are a fair amount of "last minute i'm djing tonight help" threads.

i still don't get it.

babedad, Sunday, 1 April 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

then go away and stop trolling this thread.

he's probably not like a real dj though. he's probably just doing it for fun.

well either way... here's another dance music recommenation

True.

the next grozart, Sunday, 1 April 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously?

If you can't figure out for yourself, you shouldn't be playing.

Display Name, Sunday, 1 April 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

Why?

Charlie, Sunday, 1 April 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

Why?

-- Charlie, Monday, 2 April 2007 09:29 (6 minutes ago)

Yeah, why?

Drooone, Sunday, 1 April 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Exactly. I don't see the problem with asking for new music recommendations. ILX is one of my major sources of where to find out about new music. But no, if I say I'm DJ-ing I have to be playing "my own tunes" - which I am supposed to have got from where? The sky? I could buy a music mag, but no that would be too easy and besides I'd only be playing what the magazine told me. Or I could go out clubbing, but that would mean playing other people's choices - ooh nasty!

So other than going out and buying 10 randomly selected CDs in the hope there might be something danceable on them, where am I supposed to retrieve this innate knowledge of new music?

the next grozart, Sunday, 1 April 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

If you can't figure out for yourself, you shouldn't be playing.

Actually, yeh I'm really fucking pissed off about this cloying, geeky little remark. It's people like you who take the fun out of a night out, too busy cross-sectioning the DJ's choice of music to have fun. What bollocks.

the next grozart, Sunday, 1 April 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

Quite right. But even if you were actually asking for everyone here to just provide you with what you want to play (which you're not), I don't see what the problem with that would be... I'd love to be able to do that to the guys that DJ at some of the places I go to.

Anyway: The Cars: Let's Go; Prince Geno and the Tailor Mades: Brand new man with the master plan.

Keith, Sunday, 1 April 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

every dj has to start somewhere and if you're not exclusively playing your own productions then you'll be playing someone else's picks at some point. just play some of your faves! half the thrill of djing is playing records you like really loud.

FREEEEBIRDDDDDDddd

wesley useche, Monday, 2 April 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

if you're tired of it, why not let somebody else take the reins for a week? There are a million people out there who would appreciate the chance, and seeing it from a different perspective (i.e. the other side of the dj booth) might give you some inspiration

sous les paves, Monday, 2 April 2007 08:00 (eighteen years ago)

I think people have got the wrong end of the stick here. I love DJ-ing but I rarely get the chance. I'm organising a small night and letting some friends (who aren't dj's either) come along and have a go, and I'll be finishing the night because I enjoy it. However being the local music geek, I'm constantly making mixes for people of music I enjoy and these people are the ones coming to the night so I don't want to bore them with the same old stuff I've put on mixtapes for them, especially when I've got young blood preceding me, hehe.

And of course DJing isn't just what songs you play, but the segues and beatmatches too of course, whcih makes things harder but more interesting.

the next grozart, Monday, 2 April 2007 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

anyway... still nothing's working. this is very strange. i guess it's because i've not really been listening to enough music and been a bit down lately so I'm only listening to stuff that reflects that and wouldn't work on the dancefloor. I do have lots of songs I want to play - Dream Warriors, The Fall, B52s, TEPR - but none of it is sitting too well.

the next grozart, Monday, 2 April 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

I just spent like 6 hours last night getting into electro. You should do that if you haven't.

Stevie D, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

What program are you using to mix the songs, Grozart?

NI, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

For indie-dance: "That You Might" by Home Video. It sounds like Thom Yorke singing over a house remix of a Fad Gadget song, or something. (That's really a terrible description haha)

What program are you using to mix the songs, Grozart?

Acid Pro 4 (I know, I know - don't tell anyone).

the next grozart, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 08:11 (eighteen years ago)

I even went to Asda after work yesterday and bought
- one old school rave compilation
- one hard house compilation
- one northern soul compilation
still not doing it for me. I blame my new MP3 player for this!

the next grozart, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

what kind of do are you playing at?

blueski, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

Just a little thing really, in a function room. Like Poptimism but maybe a little more Leftfield.
