Does anyone else here screw/chop/mash/whatever MP3's together?

Probably out of my depth here, but I've been using Sony Acid to do this. The fruits of three months are here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/i6azq6
and I listed all the songs used when I put this on an IMM thread a few days ago: http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=45&threadid=510#unread (near the bottom presently).

Any feedback would be appreciated, but I'd like to hear anyone else's no doubt more capable stuff. Sorry if there's already a thread for this. Also sorry if this is spam or illegal.

cool, blueski. that's awesome. How/with what do you make it?

Acid, but I want to switch to Ableton as apparently it timestretches tracks better and Acid often sucks at this (I don't really use the Beatmapper, just enter an alternative bpm just by listening).

here's an edit i did of 9" Nails - Survivalism

made in a few hours in ableton

is there a way to do like a gradual pitch shift on acid, so, for example, you could make a bass note turn into a squeal, a la "O-O-O-OOOOOOooooeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEE!" <the sound I'm looking for.
I know there must be, but don't know how.

That NIN kicks ass. I still haven't heard the original, though.

Currently working on a mashup of Mary J Blige's "Real Love" with Mike Doughty's folk-rock cover of same. I've actually had the idea to do this for a few years, but I only recently got my hands on a Blige acapella. I'll upload it when it's done.

you could split the note into many segments and increase the pitch up on each one in turn, all the way up to +16 (but retaining the original length of the note). this could easily come out sounding terrible tho, Acid not really geared for actual sound editing (i'd use Sound Forge or something like Audacity instead).

Anyone used Mixmeister for re-editing? I've not tried in any great depth yet, but it looks like a good easy-to-use program for that, esp when using plugins.

I always wondered why Acid never had a pitch/tempo slide. It seems so obvious. Instead I just end up putting tons of tiny tempo changes in a row, but this can sound horrible and if you change your mind or make a mistake you have to delete each one singlehandedly.

I'm having a mini-epiphany about Ableton Live these days, not just for remixes or mashups, but for original productions as well.

thanks. I'll check those out when I get a chance. would you just make your sound and then drag it over to acid? I tried the incrimental pitch-shifting idea, and yeah, it sounded like a robot taking a shit, iirc.

in a wav editor like soundforge you can do an extended/multiple pitch-bend to make it sound like a record being sloooowed riiiiight dooooown. it's cheesy but fun. maybe you can do that kind of thing in ableton i'm not sure (realtime-applicable effects like that would be great).

blueski, Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

right on... i'll probably look at that. acid and soundforge are both sony, right? so presumably they can work in step. "slowed right down" is played out, maybe, but i'm still at some sub-dj shadow b-side stage, so to make things that even vaguely resemble tired convention is still an achievement. and i suppose there'd be all sorts of other tricks. also on wishlist: some good software synths.

the comments here are starting to make me feel like i picked a dud with acid. so ableton's better, but maybe i can plug-in my way out of obsolescence? way too often, it seems, a sure sign that something is on its way out is that i just paid dollars for it.

anybody know where to look for good, maybe free software synths?
