Self defense he says.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

shucks, I was hoping for "just to watch him die" as Shaver's reasoning.

JoshLove, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

such an amazing songwriter!

crazy story though, uff da.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

yet not surprising, considering the legend of him threatening waylon jennings into recording the songs for 'honky tonk heroes'

check this interview for lots of roffles/insight

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I read that interview. This guy's had a hard life. I've always heard the name thrown around, but I'm not familiar with his music. Any recommendations?

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

His first albumOld Five and Dimers Like Me is one of the essential outlaw albums, and the first one he did with his son Eddy, Tramp On Your Street is a must-have as well.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Anybody gonna see him before he goes to jail for this? I guess I'm gonna see him in Iowa?

Or at least I've heard all these things are happening.

four years pass...

Well it's light and lovely Brenda coming cool across the waves
floatin over rows she helped me hoe in yesterdays
and it's me who's thirsty now for all that sweet milk gone to waste
somewhere on the road of no returning yesterdays

He was so great the last time I saw him. Opened his shirt to show off his giant heart surgery scar. Which was the ultimate anti-Bob Marley move.

I would love to see him live

Missed a few chances to see him live, but really want to as well.

Chief Duff (Eazy), Thursday, 10 January 2013 16:53 (twelve years ago)

Looks like he does play outside of TX very often

his Tales from the Tour Bus episode, and the Norm MacDonald show interview were both great. guessing he was probably also featured on Cocaine and Rhinestone or the Ken Burns series, and it's great he got to experience some extra appreciation over the past few years.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:39 (four years ago)

Loved this guy. Got to shake his hand and chat with him when he came through DC a few years ago. He put on a great show. What a life

Heez, Wednesday, 28 October 2020 17:41 (four years ago)

Man, nine lives of the alley cat indeed. Shaver's Jewels (The Best of Shaver), compiling his work w hard rock country band incl. long-gone guitarist son Eddy, should not be overlooked.
From my Nashville Scene ballot comments(this was one of my 2013 Top Five Reissues):
Shaver's Jewels are a family affair, and though blood is still thicker than mud, good thing late son Eddy's electric slide 'n' pick times paw Billy Joe's honky-pop sense can shear and veer through the druggy detour that will claim the younger (they sing about it, with BJ busting the woman who took E. one shot over the line), and the equally inertial tendencies of relatively ex-desperado old dude's righteously flashlit path. Does not preclude or anomalize a zingy, finger-salute to Amarillo, or the immortal "I been to Georgia on a fast train honey, I wasn't born no yesterday/I got a good Christian raisin' and a Eighth Grade eddjycation and I ain't gon'/Be treated thisaway."
