what an obvious selection

*yawn*

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

Noze. Cool. I like that album of theirs.

Drooone, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

I enjoyed the Schwarz one despite obviousness. I don't fancy this much.

jim, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 05:59 (eighteen years ago)

I realize the whole "*yawn* thing on internet message boards is par for the course, but come on, people. Really? That's all you've got?

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

i don't really know a lot of the bands on there tbh. It looks decent but I'm always a bit dubious of these comps for some reason. It just feels a bit... I dunno... self absorbed? Then again what I do recognise is good.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 08:17 (eighteen years ago)

well, i really enjoyed it. and i'm going to have to investigate grovesnor, whoever they may be, some more...

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.myspace.com/grovesnormusic

I forgot all about this compilation. Grovesnor used to play drums in one of my bands, and was in Hot Chip for a bit. He's pretty great..

Bocken Social Scene, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

Kudos for including Wookie's "Far East"!

Tim F, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:21 (eighteen years ago)

this mix proves that the best material turns to shit when put in the wrong order. well done hot chip.

*yawn*

Ben Boyerrr, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

The 'obvious selection/yawn' comments were a joke, surely?

I mean, c'mon... Tom Zé? Etta James? This Heat?

braveclub, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

This looks good. I really like those Subway guys, have people talked about them on here at all?

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

i only know the Positive K, Ananda (what's all the fuss??) and the Joe Jackson tracks. no yawn for me.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

despite having many, many songs on this that i love, for some reason the combined tracklist does nothing for me. of course i'll reserve judgment til i hear, obviously.

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Subway are good yeah. I think I might have mentioned them once or twice

Ronan, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

i mean like

9. New Order "Bizarre Love Triangle (Shep Pettibone Extended Remix)"
10. Young Leek -"Jiggle It"
11. Etta James & Sugar Pie DeSanto "In The Basement, Part One"
12. Black Devil Disco Club "On Just Foot"

i should be more excited by this than i am!!

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

if i knew the tracks i'd probably think 'whatever, i can just make a mix like this myself'

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

that's the thing about mixes?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

anyway on first listen as i got ready to go out last night this sounded pretty dece to me.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

It's fun and certainly worth a listen.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i think you guys are a little jaded! it looks like "omg we like all these difft songs and -- are you sitting down? -- they all GO TOGETHER!!" which is the kind of idea that hasn't lit ilm on fire for about five years at least. it looks like it'd be a nice record to throw on at a party.

gff, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

the problem with these things is that often do not go together

cf. recent four tet dj kicks

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

yeah when i listened to it, it made me think v strongly "mmm, haven't hosted a house party in a while..."

i think hot chip handle the er eclecticism better than most - i approached the transition into minimal with trepidation but lovely pastoral 'der buchdrucker' was pretty much ideal for it

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

it's the erlend oye dj kicks all over again, people

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

haunted by memories of yo mtv raps rather than 120 minutes

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

i liked the erlend oye dj kicks!

s1ocki, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

That Erland Oye DJ kicks introduced me to a fair few things I now love but I've never once wanted to sit down and listen to it all the way through since. The problem with these mixes is that they're all sort of... formless?

Which is fine if you're not at all bothered by things like that I suppose.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

i have no problem with eclecticism if it's seamless and well-paced

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

On the other hand these things are basically designed for whacking on when you bring a load of people back to your place after the pub so I'm not sure I'd judge them by the same criteria as most mix albums.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

i wz kidding u lamerz

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

this kind of thing works best for me when i'm doing stuff like, as above, getting ready to go out and... stuff. ok i can't think of any other comparable activity. cooking?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

trying on new clothes in a "dressing room montage" style?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

i've listened to the Oye mix a lot, love it. what this really means is that i usually just listen to tracks from it separately and randomly tho.

are eclecticism and seamlessness not fundamentally at odds with each other? why try and bring them together really. it's something i do a lot myself, but it's important to ask such questions.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

you must buy a lot of new clothes

omg xpost notification!

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

i wz kidding u lamerz

if people can't tell then the joke must be lame

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

has mc skat cat taught you nothing, steve?

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think they're fundamentally opposed, though i wouldn't want to live in the same house with them most days.

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

my multi-textured dreamcoat is falling apart at the seams.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

this *ECLECTIC MIX!!!* looks disjointed enough that i already don't care before listening.

i'd be more excited if it was like, 10 hyphy tracks + 10 krautrock tracks, instead of trying to connect every dot on the map.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

this just looks like one of those wack podcasts that people keep putting on the "OMG I MAED A MIX!!!" thread

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Altho I love many of the more 'eclectic' DJ Kicks editions I wonder if they should've just concentrated on more genre-focussed DJs? I think this was the original intention when CJ Bolland did the first one...but maybe not - they would've been competing with Journeys By DJ series at the time - now they go up gainst Back To Mine/Late Night Tales and such.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think Hot Chip are trying to make a 'we're so crazy and eclectic' statement with this tho are they? surely everyone is way past that now?

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

i think, judging by most of the nights i've been to in the last six months, this is pretty standard dj operating procedure in america these days if you're not deep in some specific scene or niche

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

WELL ALRIGHT THEN

if i can't criticize them for being too eclectic? can i criticize them for not being eclectic enough?

where the bold sound of the future? where's the DUBSTEP?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait, track 16, right between the postpunk and the ibiza minimal.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

criticise them for being white and nerdy. DO IT.

blueski, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

that's not dubstep!

when the indie kids took clubland over and laughed at our dumb clothes :( :( :(

sous les paves, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

Does it spoil it for you that it's mixed then?

Yes, if it's mixed badly, or if the tunes themselves aren't given the space to breathe. If the artist/band in question are really just trying to show people what they're into, why not just put out a compilation? Why undermine everything with bad mixing and failing to let any song fulfil its potential?

Optimo: How to kill the DJ Part 2 = Best of Both Worlds!

g®▲Ðұ, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

I have never stopped listening to the Positive K song, it is evergreen. That said, I don't think it's a particularly "obvious selection" for a Hot Chip mix-CD.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

ppl talking about that beatsinspace podcast/radio show, you should recommend some good ones youve discovered

deej, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

when is the Tim Sweeny DJ Kicks due? Or was it Tim Sweeny Fabric ?

There was going to be a Tim Sweeney & Tim Goldsworth mix for DJ-Kicks, but as far as I know that's been canceled/postponed indefinitely. There is a James Murphy mix coming up for Fabric though.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

is the 2CD promo thing actually mixed?

Yes.

Well I think this mix is a good thing cos it'll get teh indies listening to big club hits like doppelwhipper.

J@cob, Thursday, 5 April 2007 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

and conversely it's good for people like me, because outside the big club hits i'd basically never heard any of the songs on it before, and now i have discovered grovesnor, remembered i should definitely acquire more etta james, and heard my second joe jackson song (at this point i was going to ask where i should investigate further but i sense no one on this thread will be of any use).

i mean, i can't help that you are all so old, basically.

lex pretend, Thursday, 5 April 2007 08:25 (eighteen years ago)

i like the idea of you listening to joe jackson. you'll be into squeeze before the cock crows three times.

If there'd been loadsa dubstep on this mix this thread would have had at least one person saying 'LOL dubstep, so last season'

braveclub, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

Joe Jackson - "Look Sharp" is the place to start, I think.

Ben Boyerrr, Thursday, 5 April 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

(Didn't Mandy Moore cover a Squeeze song or 2 on some album of hers? Maybe Lex would be into that?)

Ben Boyerrr, Thursday, 5 April 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

Hot Chip ft. Hilary Duff 'Cool For Cats'

blueski, Thursday, 5 April 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

Joe Jackson's Night and Day, which Stepping Out is from, is a really underrated album. It also has Breaking Us in Two and lots of faux-latin funky NY style stuff, and can always be found for a dollar.

dan selzer, Thursday, 5 April 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

good tracks, but too many of them. it is a bit too "connect the dots"-y. even compared to the playgroup and erlend oye volumes.

the one hot chip track on it is pretty good. so is the young leek, i hadn't heard that before.

haitch, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

This is a bit of a stretch, would anyone in London like to interview Alex from Hot Chip about his top ten records tomorrow? You don't even have to type it up. Pretty easy and some free music in it for you. If you're have 30mins to spare, please email me jer✧✧✧@residentadvi✧✧✧.n✧✧.

Haven't heard this yet, but judging by the tracklisting it doesn't quite look as though it would mesh together. I'm quite fond of messy mixtapes with their seams showing but this looks a bit of a worthy mess. Still I suppose if it points punter in the direction of the source artists then it's no bad thing.

Points deducted, however, for (a) putting themselves and (b) putting their mates on the mixtape. Bit Hoxton insular pat-on-back nepotistic innit.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 April 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

I think the DJ Kicks thing is that the compiler always includes a new, exclusive track of their own on their CD.

Ben Boyerrr, Monday, 16 April 2007 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

yep there's always three releases when a new dj-kicks comes out - the mixed CD, double vinyl with some of the tracks unmixed, and a 12" with the artist's exclusive track.

haitch, Monday, 16 April 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

That'd be a good poll - best DJ Kicks track?

I loved Schwarz's "Imagination Limitation".

Tim F, Monday, 16 April 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

What was your first Joe Jackson song, Lex? "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" perhaps?

one month passes...

I bought this yesterday. Can't claim to be a "dance music person" per se, but I like it a lot. And there's definitely artists on here I'll be checking out.

This is definitely ok. I've got by my snobbishness re: the perceived obviousness I detect (knowing and calculated eclecticism = an obvious set-list).

The stylus review on it is way off. Comparing it unfavourably to the shitty fourtet dj kicks. Oh dear.
