Sufjan! How credible.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

:/ I'm not bloody Amrit Singh. I'm starting from the ground up and doing the best I can at it so if yo want to comment at least lay it out plain and clear don't make fucking vague comments and expect me to interpret them.

wesley useche, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 07:31 (eighteen years ago)

I've got good news! That gum you like is going to come back in style.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

These cds, all by talented artists demonstrate; from most, the result of a one year hiatus.

"Chan Marshall as a musician has had an ability to transcend all other neo-jazz artists. Her talent is beyond that of Norah Jones or any other modern jazz singers. While Norah Jones takes a modern sound and twists its to capture the jazz of the 60s, Chan takes a original creative sound and makes jazz a slave to her voice instead of the driving factor behind it. The Greatest is posibly one of the greatest pieces in the neo-jazz sound. Its something of a cornerstone in this genre."

Not sure that I agree with your characterization of Ms. Cat Power as a neo-jazz artist in sentence one. Then in sentence two you sorta lump her in with Norah Jones whom you call a modern jazz singer. I'm not so sure of those characterizations either. Chan worked with some Memphis soul musicians on her most recent cd, I'm not clear on how that makes her neo-jazz or modern jazz.

Have you ever heard Abby Lincoln, Cassandra Wilson, or Dee Dee Bridgewater? That's who I currently think of when I hear the term jazz singer.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

What jazz of the '60s are you saying that Norah Jones is trying to capture? Also,

"Chan takes a original creative sound"

Maybe that should be "an" instead of "a" and I'm not so sure "original creative" works well here stylistically or substantively

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

"Its a excellent cd but the….special features of the special edition do not make sense. Two flipbooks and a holographic cover. Not worth the 10 dollar premium if you ask me. The cd is excellent it sounds like the perfect followup to the album of 2004, Funeral"

It's "AN" not "a", plus did you have to use the word "excellent" twice?

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

hay yall! wesley useche get at me son, we could make beautiful music together.

1. Album reviews are dull.
2. Album reviews of records that everyone and their brother already has an opinion about even if they haven't heard the music on 'em are scarifyingly yawnful.
3. If you're gonna beg for attention, at least put on some makeup and talk about how impressive yr woodie was at the orgy.

i mean the way you wrote it, it sounds like an exaggeration but ... its not

deej, Thursday, 5 April 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

And, wait, what neo is Sufjan?

Drooone, Thursday, 5 April 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

Wesley, are you in need of an oink invite? Regardless, keep on rocking.

Oink Administrator, Thursday, 5 April 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Naw I don't have the hard drive space for lossless music nor the nice 5000 dollar vintage audio equipment from the 70s.

Sometime in the future no doubt ^_^

wesley useche, Thursday, 5 April 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

ok, chief.

consructive comments: "it is"=it's, not its.

and bought, not brought. etc.

All the bands and albums you talk about are fucking boring and obvious. People who listen to Jet might find your musical wisdom enlightening, but 95% of people on here don't really want to see any more Sufjan fellating.

Drooone, Thursday, 5 April 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

But I got to start somewhere if I want to write for pitchfork!

Missing commas, missing apostrophes, misspellings, reusing the same adjectives repeatedly in the same post...Johnny Cash is "morbose", Belle and Sebastian are "morbose"...
x-post
All right kid, you're putting us on...

marmotwolof, Thursday, 5 April 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

if you want to write for pitchfork, you can start by reviewing these two releases:

dan selzer, Thursday, 5 April 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

Well, when you're reviewing an older album (2+ years) already deemed classic by a lot of critics, it's going to be hard to say anything new (especially when it's something as simple-sounding as Sufjan Stevens). So, I wouldn't recommend reviewing it in the first place, but if it's something that you really want to write about, then you either need to somehow find something new to say or develop great voice.

You didn't seem to write much at all about your thoughts on the actual music, but when you did, it seemed to be trying a bit too hard (ex. 'beautiful orchestration' and 'demonstrating instrumental complexity' - these would be fine in a long review of the music itself, but the way your piece is structured now, they feel generic and really don't paint an aural picture of the music).

Lastly, try to have more fun with your writing. I'm not doubting that you are enjoying the process of blogging, but it doesn't come across in your writing. But really, keep writing...don't stop, and you'll likely improve.

Tape Store, Thursday, 5 April 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

Well if you want me to put some unique stuff up I will working on reviewing some of the obscure music I evolved from listening to. I really tried to leave it behind me but ..oh well.

wesley useche, Thursday, 5 April 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

working on reviewing some of the obscure music I evolved from listening to.

Example?

And there are plenty of notable new releases that you could review...I'd be more interested in hearing what you have to say about Panda Bear or Timbaland than the Neutral Sufjan Fire.

While most poeple here have heard of these albums pretty much everyone I know haven't.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 5 April 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Continuing my reviews of new releases; I have three brand new album reviews to put up.

nice semicolon use

First album on our platter is the delectable.

the delectable!!!

blah blah... a album that is reminscent of The Beach Boys on Shrooms.

regurgitating the same talking points pitchfork already uses probably won't get you hired, bro. especially when your creepy home-schooling ethos somehow lead you to believe drugs should be capitalized.

The new album (named aptly after a community of Mediums and Psychics in Florida.) Is a change in pace for Oberst.

haha

He can take a drum beat from a rock song, combine it with a synthesizor from a trance track, and combine it with his own unique lyrics to form what people are calling Dance Punk.

HOW DO I SHOT SYNTHESIZOR INTO DANCE PUNK

almost every sentence in your review is laden with mistakes. since your family is too poor to afford an editor, you should really work on learning it yourself.

Final Judgement - 1.3

(p.s. you even spell 'judgment' wrong)

modestmickey, Friday, 6 April 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

damn blog editor needs spell checker installed..........

and I really havent read the pitchfork review of panda bears new album yet I did not even know it was up.

wesley useche, Friday, 6 April 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

no, you need to learn to edit yourself. i find it hard to believe you even checked that once.

modestmickey, Friday, 6 April 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't I was to tired to read after post and I am horrible at proofreading.

wesley useche, Friday, 6 April 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

You can get a plugin for firefox that spell checks everything you type in your browser.

PLEASE SHOT SYNTHESIZOR BEFORE NEXT POST PUBLISH

modestmickey, Friday, 6 April 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

I use opera...but im not typing it in my browser im using a blog publshing app I will probably just end up downloading the microsoft version that has the word spellcheck in it. I didn't download it before because I hate microsoft products.

wesley useche, Friday, 6 April 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

ok I went back and reworked the latest posts. Hope your happy now bitch troll

wesley useche, Friday, 6 April 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

you didn't correct the first sentence. or even the final one. i won't read what's in the middle.

Final Judgement - 0.3

modestmickey, Friday, 6 April 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

Not enough YSIs for ya Mickey?

Noodle Vague, Friday, 6 April 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

Obvious joke about really knowing how to spell judgement being called for here...

kv_nol, Friday, 6 April 2007 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

kv_nol, that's how he spells it after every 'review'

modestmickey, Friday, 6 April 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Judgement is an legit variant spelling. Look it up. (I'm not defending the horrible writing.)

There's something pathetically Judy Blume about a character who has taken a lot of shit elsewhere enthusiastically jumping all over an obviously clueless (maybe masochistic?) newbie here.

ghost rider, Friday, 6 April 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

there's something pathetically bill o'reilly (or insert other conservative commentator here) about seeing people as "characters" and then quik-psycho-sexual-analyzing them

modestmickey, Friday, 6 April 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

1) STOP RUSHING AROUND. seriously, if you just graduated from high school, you have a good deal of time before you need to start some imaginary "race" to become a Pitchfork writer.

2) following this credo, stop blogging and start INVESTIGATING music that you haven't heard.

3) keep writing, but don't pass off poorly-edited reviews of mostly-crappy albums as worthwhile reading material. in other words, please get better taste and Strunk & White's Elements of Style before posting stuff to a blog.

4) don't go on tirades/caricaturization trips against the public school system. it makes you seem like a useless snob.

the table is the table, Friday, 6 April 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

that said, the rest of you need to calm down. most immigrant kids don't come to the US speaking English like champions. so shut the fuck up with the strangely racist commentary.

the table is the table, Friday, 6 April 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Naw im billingual Know english just as well as spanish. I just do quirky and unique reviews...
