KENYA NOT FUCKING NORWAY!

wesley useche, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Biosphere gets my vote, I forgot he's Norwegian.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

No Noxagt?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

I have only included acts that have had at least some kind of international attention
Plus Annie...

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

no shining, no noxagt, no spunk, no maja ratkje...?

m the g, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

why no Noxagt?

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

Because Noxagt fucking suck.

I'm torn between Gorgoroth and Nils Petter Molvaer.

unperson, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm.. Forgot about 120 Days and Satyricon

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

Plus Annie...

"Chewing Gum" at UK#25 is way more than most of these acts were ever close to.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for royksopp, cuz they were on of the two artists i'd heard (the other was a-ha)...i feel bad i haven't heard Dimmu Borgir or Turbonegro...

was Frida from ABBA? I like that one "Somthing's going on" song or whatever it was...

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

no Hongroe, no credibility

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

A-ha for take on me alone.

wesley useche, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Kings of Convenience.

DavidM, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

how can you include Lene Marlin and not Marion Raven?

danzig, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

No Datarock, so I'll go with Ulver.

M@tt, you really need to hear both those bands, srsly.

John Justen, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Lotsa evil in the dark Norwegian landscape...

NYCNative, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Forgot about Kings Of Convenience, Datarock and Pleasure too. Dammit...

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Geir, forgot the melodic pop-rock band Superfamily
http://www.myspace.com/superfamilynorway

djmartian, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

No When?
No Jazzkammer / Jazkamer?
Uh, no fucking EMPEROR?

Oh Geir.

Matt #2, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for TNT as a protest.

Matt #2, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

Where the hell is Darkthrone? And Ildjarn! And Enslaved! And In The Woods! And Kampfar! And Solefald! And Taake! And Fleurety!

I actually wouldn't want to choose between Ulver and Emperor. Maybe I'll just pick Grieg. He was pretty kult.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

I limited myself to acts with some international following. Of course this is getting difficult in the metal genre, as about every single possible Norwegian Metal act has an international following consisting of about 10 people.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 April 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

ILDJARN
ILDJARN
ILDJARN

I live a few minutes from him and boy does he like cookies and tea. And RC cars/planes-

Weirdo.

(voted ulver)

MRZBW, Thursday, 5 April 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

The Moving Oos, baby! It's time to get in on the ground floor before their inevitable worldwide domination.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 April 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

okay i realized that i didn't have to choose between emperor and ulver so i voted for ulver too.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

Burzum is on the list for fucks sake! How can anyone in their right mind take Ulver over Burzum? (shakes head)

Siegbran, Thursday, 5 April 2007 08:03 (eighteen years ago)

Going for cold blondes here. Annie.

zeus, Thursday, 5 April 2007 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

I refuse to vote because of the no Emperor thing. :-(

the next grozart, Thursday, 5 April 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

WOT NO LINDSTRØM

braveclub, Thursday, 5 April 2007 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Burzum is on the list for fucks sake! How can anyone in their right mind take Ulver over Burzum?"

my heart says ulver. i love burzum, but i am obsessed with ulver. i probably listen to old mayhem records more often than i listen to burzum. okay, that might not be true. i've been listening to filosofem a lot lately.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, seriously, ulver are one of my favorite groups EVER. in any genre. i can't say the same for burzum. and at this point they should add a couple of years to his sentence for all the crappy music that he's inspired. on the other hand, i love tons of ulver-inspired bands.

scott seward, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd choose Ulver over Burzum.

the next grozart, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

MOTORPSYCHO ?!!!

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

It seems y'all need a little refresher course in Norwegian rock. Aside from omitting the Moving Oos, you have neglected to mention Jokke & Valentinerne. They are behind arguably the Stairway To Heaven of Norwegian rock, To Fulle Menn.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 April 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I was just about to say, where is Motorpsycho, you massive weirdo?!

myopic_void, Thursday, 5 April 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

It seems y'all need a little refresher course in Norwegian rock. Aside from omitting the Moving Oos, you have neglected to mention Jokke & Valentinerne. They are behind arguably the Stairway To Heaven of Norwegian rock, To Fulle Menn.

:D

And Motorpsycho is indeed missing.

MRZBW, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

And here's some nice pro-shot Motorpsycho footage from last year.

MRZBW, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

No Motorpsycho = No credibility for this list.

Marty Innerlogic, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

Can you dig To Fulle Menn? I knew that you could...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D70Rdb7TkJw

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Motorpsycho, yes. Jokke was great, but there's hardly much of an international following.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 April 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Btw. it sucks how there don't appear to be any "Her Kommer Vinteren" clips om Youtube.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 April 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Dimmu Borgir because nobody else is going to, and Death Cult Armageddon is a mind-blowing record.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 6 April 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, I guarantee you that Dimmu Borgir will be in the top ten, mostly because outside of a-ha, edvard grieg, turbonegro, and secret garden, they've probably got more general name recognition than anyone else on the list.

(That is not a comment on them, BTW, just an accurate potrayal of the odds.)

John Justen, Friday, 6 April 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

whoops. portrayal. I CAN SPEL.

John Justen, Friday, 6 April 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but all the other metal dudes are going to vote for the more kvlt bands (as witnessed above), and the non-metal dudes sure as hell ain't gonna vote for Dimmu Borgir.

But seriously, why no Emperor? More than 10 people like them on ILM alone!

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 6 April 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

turbonegro by a mile. they are also the best european act, and the best rock band of the 90s.

and the worst norwegian act: Mortiis.

hooray for the land of my grandmother!

UncleTomfly, Friday, 6 April 2007 05:40 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Turbonegro too.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 6 April 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, I guarantee you that Dimmu Borgir will be in the top ten, mostly because outside of a-ha, edvard grieg, turbonegro, and secret garden, they've probably got more general name recognition than anyone else on the list.

Röyksopp?
Jan Garbarek?

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 April 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

THIS JUST IN. ROYKSOPP NOT THAT FAMOUS IN THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
THIS ALSO JUST IN. JAN GARBAREK NOT THAT FAMOUS ANYWHERE.

John Justen, Friday, 6 April 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

Turbonegro, Secret Garden and Dimmu Borgir not that famous in the general public either.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 April 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

Dimmu Borgir aren't known by, say, my parents (although that's true of a lot of bands), but they did play the Main stage at Ozzfest a couple years ago, and their last record has sold 112,000 copies to date, which is pretty damn good for a black metal band.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 6 April 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

They are well-known among people who are into metal. Which isn't the general public.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 April 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

EVERYBODY LOVES METAL!

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 6 April 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Geir doesn't.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 6 April 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

Metal wants & needs to think of itself as maligned in order to establish credential, but in fact there are many more voices maligning chartpop than metal.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 6 April 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

Geir, Turbonegro headline festivals, ampitheaters and theaters in europe and headline megaclubs in the usa - thus well known enough to live like rockstars.

UncleTomfly, Friday, 6 April 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

I would bet more people in the real world have heard of Turbonegro than say - Annie.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 6 April 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Turbonegro were lots of fun live, and I have two of their records that I enjoy very much, but I don't know if I would go so far as to call them the best rock band of the 90s.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 6 April 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

I would bet more people in the real world have heard of Turbonegro than say - Annie.

Sure. But more people have heard of Röyksopp than Turbonegro.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 April 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

greir you are way wrong. turbo have had multiple records on large labels and have the biggest organized rock fan cult outside of the greatful dead/

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

jeff, name one band rock band in the 90s that had a better 3 record run than "ass cobra" "apocalypse dudes" and "scandinavian leather"

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Monster Magnet. Superjudge, Dopes to Infinity, and Power Trip.

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

that doesn't even include spine of god, which is easily the best monster magnet record.

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer Dopes to Infinity. But if you include Spine of God, that's FOUR killer records in a row. (25... tab was a contract filler, I don't really count that)

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

and now that I googled royskopp, i see they were huge in the electronic world, but that is completely faceless over in the usa, outside of the dance world, i'll bet hardly anyone has heard of them -- whereas turbonegro are about as visible as you can possibly get on their level.

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

tab is filler, and taste aside, no way do any of those records measure up to apocalypse dudes.

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

I won't deny that Apocalypse Dudes is a great record. But as far as hard rock goes, Powertrip hits way harder.

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

Apocalypse Dudes is better than Powertrip(and I like powertrip) Spine Of God is easily the best MM album though.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

Seen both Live too and Turbonegro shaded it.

Live version of Spacelord vs live version of I Got Erection. Now that's a hard *snigger* one.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

cool it's a beavis and butthead and butthead fite on the norway thread!!! yay!!!!!

scott seward, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

Well,I disagree greatly, to my ears powertrip cant compare to AD and for damn sure nothing on it hits nearly as hard as "I got erection" on ass cobra, which I have seen turn J-crew wearing jocks at a Queens of the stone age show turn into crying little bitches.

but here we're getting into semantics and taste. Personally, I dont care for some of the radio-friendly alt rock that monster magnet made when they had their brush with serious fame. they were getting a little to close to the generic shit in the "rock radio" toilet for my enjoyment.

and my opinion of them is colored by the one time I saw Monster Magnet in 1993, when Dave threw a bitch fit onstage because they were playing outside at the edge in fort lauderdale instead of inside (and got blown away by clutch) and played a 4 song set - with tab 3rd. shitty attitude, shitty show instead of "spine of god" and when my friend who was their #1 fan in florida heckled them for being such little bitches, he got tossed and arrested for tresspassing.

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

so anyone who likes guitar distortion is beavis and butthead, scott?
should we start talking about the sweater music that fills up the bulk of the threads on this board to make you comfortable?

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

haha scott is beavis and butthead rolled into one uncle tomfly! Better check the rolling metal thread.
(Geir is Stuart.)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

gotcha. and by the way brigadier, looks like i will be bringing some funk to the uk for you in the fall

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

The UK is always in need of more funk.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

I created a new thread for the Turbonegro versus monster magnet discussion:

http://www.ilxor.com:8080/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=41&threadid=57068#unread

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 7 April 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

loch ness mouse, though apparently the last record is not so good

keythkeyth, Sunday, 8 April 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

Last day for voting.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

hi i am 100% ethnic norwegian and i just want to say fuck this poll for not havin no NOXAGT, who are awesome thanks

iiiijjjj, Monday, 9 April 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

OK, so I guess there are about 200 metal acts I might have included with maybe 100 people around the world loving their music.

More importantly, I forgot Magnet. I mean, he is even among my favourite acts of the past years, has certainly received international attention, and yet I forgot him.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

I think you're being a bit unfair to some of those bands. Who could get more than a 100 people at each of their gigs.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Do they know about the Moving Oos in Norway? I'm trying my best to spread the word in New Jersey.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, both Emperor and Immortal played a couple reunion shows in the US, charged 100 plus dollars for tickets, and still sold out every gig. They weren't playing stadiums or anything, but that indicates some level of popularity. It seems from other threads that you don't particularly like metal, but you still have to give the bigger/more influential bands their due -- a lot of those groups have pretty big fan bases across the world, and started entire subgenres.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 9 April 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

Out of the truly bigger Norwegian metal bands, I only forgot Satyricon. Mayhem, Burzum, Ulver and Dimmu Borgir are all in there.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 9 April 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, to be among the biggest acts, some crossover to non-metal fans is required.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 9 April 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

Looks like the results are in btw. Not too surprised about Turbonegro's win :)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 9 April 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure there's a way to quantify it, but I think Royksopp is pretty well known in the US. They headline KCRW type events and supported Basement Jaxx at Hollywood Bowl etc. "Remind Me" is also rather cleverly used in those GEICO cavemen ads.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

Go Turbonegro!!!

(emperor are very well known, that's a fact)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

I am surprised Annie didn't win given the amount of ILM-Love on here.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

There's a lot of ILM love of Turbonegro too.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)
