Inspired by the Swedish Tax Office refusing to register a newborn named "Metallica"......

Not if the band in question is Fuckhead; Metallica seems harmless.

Mark Rich@rdson, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

I wish my parents had named me Motorhead

There was a customer who always wore shirts with American flags on them and who was always trying to hug my female coworkers who had a baby son. We asked what the kid's name was, and he said "Toby Keith".

So, no.

Good for the Swedish Tax Office. Just because you're a total fucking retard with bad taste in music doesn't mean you should be allowed to make your kid's life hard.

davie, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

I reckon since it's the 21st century and all we should be calling our kids futuristic names like "Neon" and "Protorb".

My friend Kieran grew up in a small Sussex village and claims one of his contemporaries named his son Megadeth.

Aw, fuck. My parents named me after a rather distinctively-named singer and decided that I should go by it even though it was my middle name, which led to all sorts of childhood hell due to issues of going by something other than first name + no one can pronounce it + no one can spell it + anyone who can pronounce and spell it automatically going "Oh, you're named after _______, aren't you?" By the time I was fifteen or so I switched to going by my first name, but my family and closest friends still call me by my horrible middle name. The motherfuckers.

I have issues that still need to be resolved.

Oh, and insult to injury, I don't like the singer.

The Reverend, Thursday, 5 April 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

your name is meatloaf?

marmotwolof, Thursday, 5 April 2007 06:43 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait that's easy to pronounce

marmotwolof, Thursday, 5 April 2007 06:43 (eighteen years ago)

Totally. (xp)

The Reverend, Thursday, 5 April 2007 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

Limahl?

marmotwolof, Thursday, 5 April 2007 06:56 (eighteen years ago)

as long as it isn't a band that sucks...like metallica I don't see why not!

wesley useche, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the goverment should have a special committee to decide which bands suck and which don't, and whose names are therefore acceptable to give to your children.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

I was named after Bobby Darin and I survived.

You know, I always thought Krokus would be a lovely name for a little girl...

darin, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

i named after cory from 3 dog night :(

chaki, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

naming after a musician in a band is ok....naming after actual band is just stupid unless in extreme cases...like I might name my first son Hold Steady

wesley useche, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'm hoping that the "y" substitution for "al" will catch up with kid's names ala "Jackyl":

Rachyl

Much cooler!

darin, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:48 (eighteen years ago)

My GF has a friend with a daughter named Indie.

Display Name, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:48 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Rachyl is cooler than Rachal.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

I like it cuz it makes the kids' names look like cold medicine.

darin, Thursday, 5 April 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

Just use a subtle ümläut.

Siegbran, Thursday, 5 April 2007 08:01 (eighteen years ago)

max, Thursday, 5 April 2007 08:30 (eighteen years ago)

I think this should be allowed on the condition that the child's middle names are 'But Only Up To The Black Album'.

chap, Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

I was named after http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domenico_Modugno

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

There is a difference between using a common name and one that obviously isn't.

Display Name, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

poor kids.

circa1916, Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, fuck it. Name her Salmonella instead.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 April 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

I named my son after Daniel Johnston. His middle name is Jason, as my wife balked at the idea of calling him Spiritualized.
