Who do you think is the best colombian music act? This list is primarily for those of Colombian origin but if a act with just one colombian in it is good enought it will be included. I will try to put the main ones on there if anyone wants to vote for another act name it.

No Dam, no credibility.

As much as I love Grupo Niche (despite their uneven output), I have to write in a vote for Joe Arroyo (who I'm suprised you left off your list). Also, do any of those people do cumbia? I guess it doesn't matter since I am not going to vote for any acts that mostly do cumbia, even though I like it. I don't actually know it in much depth.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 6 April 2007 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

(You did leave off a bunch of major salsa acts, but since I'm probably the only one who is going to vote for any of them, it doesn't matter. Again, the choice between Grupo Niche and Joe Arroyo is a tough one for me, and on another day I might go with Niche.)

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 6 April 2007 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Listening to "Por Ti No Morire" right now, which just kills.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 6 April 2007 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

Joe Arroyo is the man.

curmudgeon, Friday, 6 April 2007 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Diomedes in the house. Although Arroyo rules too.

La Lechera, Friday, 6 April 2007 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

I don't even recognize that name, and now I see he has tons of records out. But I don't actually know that much about Colombian music outside of salsa, which is not to say I have no interest in it. Vallenato especially I don't know too much about, which I gather is Diomedes's main thing.

Vallenato is totally Diomedes' thing. I love love love salsa, but nothing actually reminds me of Colombia like vallenato.

La Lechera, Friday, 6 April 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

And cumbia, I guess. But vallenato is more tear-jerking. My favorite Diomedes song is "Tu Eres La Reina" -- it's all about how much he loves Colombia.

La Lechera, Friday, 6 April 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

I am sure it isn't Shakira, but I've heard of her, so.... :)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 6 April 2007 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

Also I know that Carlos Vives can be kind of corny, but I like him anyway. "La Gota Fria" and that whole album of traditional songs he did was really good -- Clasicos de la Provincia, I think?

La Lechera, Friday, 6 April 2007 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

I like Carlos Vives too! but mostly for the more upbeat songs ("Fruta Fusca," especially, which got a surprising amount of play at one of the salsa/merengue/bachata -oriented clubs I used to go to regularly.) But even some of the slower things are okay, just not anything that really excites me.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 6 April 2007 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah sorry I don't really listen to colombian metal mostly folk rock and I forgot to put fricking Pescao Vivo on the list.

Someone kill me.

Aterciopelados!

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 6 April 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

Distric Of Columbia counts? OK, Marvin Gaye, then :)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 7 April 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

Where is FRUKO in this poll? I just bought this:
http://www.dustygroove.com/prip/3/8/450783i.htm
and it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. This comp is truly hot shit. Worth it for the percussion alone.

I just thought I would post this in case anyone was interested - es la verraquera!

La Lechera, Sunday, 15 April 2007 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

dammit. link didn't work. it's a comp entitled
COLOMBIA! The Golden Age of Discos Fuentes: The Powerhouse of Colombian Music 1960-76.

Anyway. It's great.

La Lechera, Sunday, 15 April 2007 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

Fruko is great. Of course, Joe Arroyo was with Fruko at one point. (Fruko y Sus Tesos are still making good salsa as far as I know.)

Search the archives for me mentioning them. Ahem.

Also, that Colombia! compilation was brought up on the rolling salsa thread (I think it was, unless it was the rolling whirled music thread).

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, well I just thought it should be on the COLOMBIA thread. I can't keep up ;)
Anyway, it's great, huh?

La Lechera, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

My enthusiasm cannot be contained to one thread.

La Lechera, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

It belongs here too, definitely. Actually, it's not as if I've heard it, but I've heard music from some of the same bands on there.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

This song kicks my ass, but maybe it's not vintage enough for you:

It sounds better on a club sound-system.

(Their videos are always ridiculous.)

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

i wish there were a way to stuff ballots for diomedes :(

remy bean, Sunday, 15 April 2007 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

MASACRE!

Siegbran, Sunday, 15 April 2007 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Anyone hear the new Aterciopelados yet?

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 07:17 (seventeen years ago)

Why weren't Bruce Springstreen or Bob Dylan an option here? Both are on Colombia.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

Marching powder does not count.
