Why? Because I am listening to Mingus' "A Modern Jazz Symposium" and Jimmy Knepper is tearing shit the fuck up!

I think I need to hear this, too.

That trombone shout choirs link isn't as fascinating as you might think, Jordan.

I saw Conrad Herwig with Eddie Palmieri, dude is totally sick and can play anything.

Jordan, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

i suppose my post was prob a pretty obvious one but nonetheless

i love the trombone, in theory, but have a small amount of trouble with it in practice...exceptions of course include Knepper, Fuller and Johnson...but nonetheless. It always seems like it just barely makes it around the bases, or something, that it feels extremely constrained in terms of the melodies that it is able to achieve, and it feels really limiting. That I'm never quite sure that the dudes are going to hit the notes they 'need' to or something.

deej, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

'Cause of it's microtonal properties, I've always been curious why it hasn't been more prominent in indian classical music. They sure seemed to take to the violin like gangbusters.

Oilyrags, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

speaking purely in jazz here btw

deej, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Roswell Rudd twice with Steve Lacy. Man, those guys played together like mindreaders.

Oilyrags, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really like fast/bebop trombone, the guys that can play runs like a sax or trumpet just because it's really hard. Trombone is a weapon, it can have so much character because of lack of keys/valves. I love lead trombone, the sound on the high notes is so much thicker than on higher-pitched instruments.

Jordan, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

Shit, I don't mean Roswell Rudd. I mean George Lewis.

Oilyrags, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

There's a great great Roswell Rudd solo on one of those JCOA albums (I think). I would LOVE to see him spit it out live.

Phenominal trombone solo on the recent Brownout 12", all in 16th notes and precise as hell, yet not technical-sounding at all.

I only keep going on about this cause it's a great track (Latin funk, not jazz) and because I forgot how great this instrument can be in the right hands.

factcheckr, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

the grachan moncur III mosaic box (jackie mclean, bobby hutcherson, tony williams) is still out there and might be the best $40 you spend all year.

dan, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

George Lewis is my favorite, especially Homage to Charles Parker. The first time I saw the Brotzmann Tentet, Jeb Bishop was playing out of his mind.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 6 April 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

I think my favorite Jeb Bishop is the afro-beat tune on Ted Sirota's record. Really simple and funky playing, not out at all.

Another thread on thrombone players

For 'classical' do check Richard Barrett's "Earth" (written for a duo w/perc). Can't think of a lot else..

xyzzzz__, Friday, 6 April 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

hurray Arkestra reprazent

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 6 April 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Man I'm late here, but Rosalino (while definitely not the best dad on earf) was an incredible player...his jubilant playing kinda takes on this unsettling Lynchian tone in light of the way his life ended.

deej otm re: Curtis Fuller, his Blues-ette is essential hard bop. Let's not forget Carl Fontana either, his The Great Fontana is an incredible sampler.

Man I'm lucky my Jazz History professor was a trombonist. Too many history books gloss over the trombone after swing, I'm glad he was there to keep my ears open.

I have the Grachan Moncur Blue Notes, and his two BYG albums, in my iPod. New Africa is amazing.

unperson, Friday, 6 April 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

I have a Blue Note/Mosaic Jackie McLean set - I need to bust that pup out again. Its gotta have a lot of the Moncur stuff, right?

julian priester's albums under his name for ECM in the 70s were always overlooked, i thought. just as good or better than a lot of the herb's 'lectric outputs

Barry Rogers is worth reading about:

(Thanks to James Redd and the Blecchs for pointing out that article.)

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

I guess the thing that's especially interesting to me (and relevant to this thread) is that I like his sound a lot, but apparently he hadn't really learned proper technique early on and was doing a lot of damage to himself physically, using too much force.
