I don't disagree that your son will eventually need to know Chinese. Once they stop loaning us money and letting us pay in the dollar, we'll all basically need to know Chinese. Before that, he'll need to know Spanish.

i want to learn spanish. i can read/speak french almost fluently, and understand TV-show spanish... but i wouldn't make it on a street.

Is Chinese really all that useful? There are lots of speakers, sure, but unlike Spanish they're mostly in one part of the world and Chinese culture isn't nearly as common in the western world as Hispanic. Unless you plan on going to China a lot it doesn't seem as useful. And Chinese isn't a single language, even Mandarin and Cantonese aren't single languages. If you just learnt one Mandarin/Cantonese language, even one of the most common ones, most of the billion+ Chinese speakers still wouldn't understand you. You'd have to learn several Chinese languages to be understood by as many people as you would be if you just learnt Spanish.
