********** 21 APRIL DEADLINE - ILX 2006 MUSIC POLL VOTING THREAD **********

VOTING:

You'll be voting for a maximum of 20 albums and 20 songs. The scoring will be:

#1--20 points
#2--19 points
#3--18 points
#4--17 points
#5--16 points
...
#10--11 points
...
#20--1 point

Lists must be of no more than 20, any more will be ignored. Unordered lists will get 10.5 points each. And please use the Artist - Album and Artist - Track formatting.

BLURBS:

Blurbs are great, release your inner VH1 talking head. For any track or album that you're willing to write a sentence or two or three (or more if you are so inclined), put an asterisk by it and I will contact you if I will be in need of your services. You'll have a week or so to write it.

DEADLINES:

Deadline for lists: April 21
Deadline for blurbs: April 26 (ish)

There's been plenty of time to reflect on 2006, so I think a couple of weeks is more than enough time to make your picks.

IN THIS THREAD:

No exit polling! I think a little mystery goes a long way, so don't post your ballots here. Campaigning for your favorite tracks and albums is a great idea, and this would certainly be the right place to do it. YSIs are no more (neverforget.gif) but linking to YouTube videos or other streaming media links works.

And now for the important stuff...the eligible tracks and albums list is here. I thought hosting it on a separate site would neaten this thread up a bit, especially if there are any errors that need to be corrected. The address to send your votes to is ilx2006poll@gmail.com. Also, if you've done a poll in the past and have any advice for me, please send it my way.

Thanks to Billy Dods and the Good Dr. Bill, whose well-crafted past poll posts were so easy to copy.

Are email addresses being obscured now? ilx2006pollATgmailDOTcom, I'll try to get the OP fixed.

musically, Friday, 6 April 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

Top work so far. Much better to have the lists on another page.

Alba, Friday, 6 April 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

Just to clarify, you're accepting a list of Singles *and* a list of Albums, right? Not a combined thing?

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

Also, because I missed it the first time scanning the original post:

HERE IS THE LIST OF NOMINATIONS

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

Right, a list of 20 albums and a list of 20 songs.

musically, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:29 (eighteen years ago)

What happens if I just send in 10 albums rated 1-10?

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

Damn i didn't nominate Isis in time. I cant vote on a list that doesn't have that!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

suggestion, have an additional optional voting category

best overlooked album - i.e an album that wasn't initially nominated by ILM

pick one only

it will interesting to see the albums mentioned !

djmartian, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:07 (eighteen years ago)

Damn, that reminds me of another category I wanted to have...worst album/track of 2006. Just name a handful of albums and songs that you truly loath(ed). Same deal with the asterisk for blurbs. I'll list the top 3 or so.

I'm not sure about best overlooked album...maybe if most people had used up their nominations, and if there had been serious campaigning for things that didn't get nominated, it would work. Plus, I don't think it's right to give an album that wasn't nominated the first time around a special highlight over an album that was nominated for but received too few votes.

musically, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

American V didn't make the candidate list? What were people thinking...

wesley useche, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

wait...wtf? Where is band of horses?

wesley useche, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

i warned people with a long list of artists who released albums in 2006 that weren't nominated hours before the deadline !

http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=41&threadid=56738

There are some high profile artists that missed out ! including these 20

Band of Horses, Bat for Lashes, Celtic Frost, Chris Clark, Comets on Fire, Converge, Cult of Luna, Envy, I Love You But I Have Chosen Darkness, Intronaut, Isis, The Mars Volta, My My, 120 Days, Red Sparowes, Secret Machines, Sickoakes, Alex Smoke - paradolia, Tool, Trentemoller

Suggestion, stick them in as late wildcards ! what's the harm in that ! let them sink or swim in the final poll !

even Killing Joke - was not honoured ! What would alexinnyc say ! HONOUR THE FIRE !

djmartian, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

I never saw the thread until it was too late. There's several bands in DJ Martians list that i would vote for. So yeah add them please!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

I think if no one bothered to nominate something after two weeks of the noms thread consistently being bumped to the top of the page, it's safe to say it probably won't get enough votes to place in the poll anyway. Plus, there was even a list posted with all those artists, so people were reminded.

And just a note: please order your list with the #1 on top and lowest on the bottom, and not by points, or else I might confuse your top album with your bottom album, etc.

musically, Saturday, 7 April 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

the only one I added to the list was Tapes n tapes

wesley useche, Saturday, 7 April 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

This is probably the only one I nominated that no one's heard: Shirrelle C. Limes and the Lemons - A Toast to the Month of July

That track is actually by one person, not a band. And she's great. Her album is, too. There aren't any other tracks that are as infectious as that one, but it's still a strong effort.

Tape Store, Saturday, 7 April 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

Here is a much clearer version of that Shirrelle C. Limes and the Lemons track...It also has the rest of the EP.

Tape Store, Saturday, 7 April 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm..."Back to Black" doesn't seem to have made it to the tracks list?

hobart paving, Saturday, 7 April 2007 08:48 (eighteen years ago)

I would assume it's ineligible due to being a 2007 single.

The Reverend, Saturday, 7 April 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

my first try with nuILX linking, forgive me for any errors.

some relatively odd or obscure things I nominated:

Buckethead- Soothsayer (live performance) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNxT2IKkmBo

Guns N' Roses- Catcher in the Rye http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOq6li2CQM4

Guns N' Roses- There Was a Time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umn1JLFBjUo

Guns N' Roses- Better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFbj8l4T_j0

and...

Hannah Montana- If We Were a Movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugWmA92taP8&mode=related&search=

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 7 April 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

Please consider voting for Margaret Berger's Samantha...imagine "Some Girls" by Rachel Stevens times a thousand. Just a wonderful pop track.

musically, Sunday, 8 April 2007 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

I recommend that people listen to Tokyo Jihen's album Adult, which should be easy enough to find on, say, a major jpop forum. I think of it as art rock, but made by someone who has no aversion to pop and is no stranger to the top Japan's music charts, and with a killer rhythm section, and things like that.

Here's the first song (though the video deviates from the album version by including a "humorous" (?) rapping section):

RE: Campaigning for your favorite tracks and albums is a great idea, and this would certainly be the right place to do it.

Reminder, these are the 20 albums that I initially nominated:

2006 Nominations - A list by djmartian

including links to myspace

djmartian, Sunday, 8 April 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

well, GNR finally hired a new manager and they sent youtube a letter. Sorry for the freshly dead links.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 8 April 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

I will be gone for the next few days, so please bump this thread a bit if it's ever on the brink of falling off the front page.

musically, Monday, 9 April 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I realize I'm the only person that nominated any metal bands other than the Pitchfork favorites, but most of the bands I nominated are fairly accessible. Damone (who aren't even really metal) should appeal to girl pop/punk fans, Into Eternity to Mastodon fans, etc. I don't know, give them a fair shot.

Jeff Treppel, Monday, 9 April 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

So is this to say no voting for those bands that didn't make the cut? Only one I really care about is Comets on Fire.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Well, the point of nominations is to create a list of albums/tracks to vote for, right? I thought it was fairly straightforward.

I've received 15 ballots so far...keep them coming!

musically, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, that is the point of nominations. Just wasn't clear based on the discussion above if a decision had been made. No big deal.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

No, it's fine, it's just that I want to make sure that people heed the nominations so that there's some amount of consensus with voting and the 50th place album doesn't just get one vote, etc. Of course, if that's the case I'll parse it down a bit from 50.

musically, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

No excuse this time...just bumping this to the main page. If you don't vote, you can't complain, etc.

musically, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

I really really think 45:33 should be under albums, not singles. Anyone agree?

sovietpanda, Thursday, 12 April 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

also, could the Delia & Gavin entry just be shortened to the Relevee single as a whole, including remixes?

sovietpanda, Thursday, 12 April 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah okay, I'm going to reiterate, 45:33 is an album, not a single.

sovietpanda, Thursday, 12 April 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

I disagree with you about 45:33...I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a workout song, not a workout album (at least according to every news item I've read).

Tape Store, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

I was also under the impression that the entire gimmick of 45:33 was that it was one long song. Did it chart on iTunes as one or the other?

As for Relevee, what seems to have been done in past ILX music polls is that remixes are counted separately from singles; I think last year the Jacques Lu Cont mix of Lose Control (or Mr. Brightside, I can't remember) placed, as well as the original.

musically, Thursday, 12 April 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

So... if we can campaign for choices - here are two that I think are worthy of slots... and would definitely distinguish the ILX list from every other poll out there:

Let's put Ayelet Rose Gottlieb's brilliant Mayim Rabim album on the list. It's innovative, exciting, exotic, new, etc. Despite it only ranking 9 on my Idolator list, I'm bumping it up to 1 to garner max points.

Also - Thursday's City By the Light Divided was criminally overlooked last year. I'll beg, barter and steal if you stick Thursday on your list. (Certainly you can find one slot for it.) Pretty, pretty please with angst on top?

Mordechai Shinefield, Friday, 13 April 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

felt good to finally have this going, to vote in it. had to scramble a bit to put together 20 songs. somehow i couldn't get that done for 2006 - like, my blog has a top 50 albums, but no top 50 songs! go figure.

you guys have no idea how much i miss posting here - being able to post here - on a regular basis. really. fuck a work server.

Beatrix Kiddo, Friday, 13 April 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I shouldn't talk about Relevee, I campaigned explicitly for the Lose Control remix last year.

As far as 45:33, yes it's one song, but it's an album length song. It's digested as an album, not like a single. It was on people's best albums lists, not singles. It just makes a lot more sense that way, I think.

sovietpanda, Friday, 13 April 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

No one remembered to nominate Supersilent!

And yes, Mayim Rabim is beautiful (and very lively, tuneful, and hooky if the Tzadik label scares you off.) Thom Jurek described it well here.

Ali Farka Touré's Savane is probably still my #1. I'll try to break down exactly why some time but it just feels good.

Sundar, Friday, 13 April 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

Listening to the White Willow album for the first time. Some really nice stuff on here.

I'll see if I can check out Thursday.

Sundar, Friday, 13 April 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still not sure about 45:33...I think I'm going to stick with it as a track. It's been mostly referred to as a track, not just on ILX but the press materials and reviews. It might not be right but I think there would be arguments for either way, so I'm inclined to just leave it the way it is.

musically, Friday, 13 April 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

I understand where you're coming from, and I don't mean to harp on it, but I really still think it should be changed.

It's counted as an album at both

Pazz & Jop - http://www.villagevoice.com/pazzandjop06/index.php?page=ballots&mid=7369

pitchfork - http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/40007/Staff_List_Top_50_Albums_of_2006/page_3

sovietpanda, Saturday, 14 April 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

Well if they both call it an album then I suppose that's the right way to go...if there are no objections I will change it to album. I'll make sure to get in touch with anyone who voted for it as a track and have them change their ballot a bit.

musically, Saturday, 14 April 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

I hope people haven't forgotten about this, and are slowly crafting their ballots...I haven't received nearly as many ballots as I'd like.

musically, Sunday, 15 April 2007 07:09 (eighteen years ago)

I totally need to make one.

The Reverend, Sunday, 15 April 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

'45.33' and 'fizheuer zieheuer' are totally singles. very long singles but still.

lex pretend, Sunday, 15 April 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

also marc houle's 'bay of figs' is def a single surely?

lex pretend, Sunday, 15 April 2007 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

To anyone making a list now - keep Ayelet Rose Gottlieb and Thursday at the job of the list. Most unique 2006 list ever.

Mordechai Shinefield, Sunday, 15 April 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

Well I think 45.33 could be argued either way, and since other major polls considered it an album that's a pretty convincing argument for me.

Please send in your ballots...at this point I'd probably do a top 15 or so for both polls. I'd like to do more!

musically, Sunday, 15 April 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

i don't really mind but fizheuer should be classed the same as 45.33 surely?

(am working on ballot! albums easy, tracks omg how to narrow down from 100)

lex pretend, Sunday, 15 April 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

yes, choosing 20 tracks is proving impossible - and I'm having difficulty trying to decide whether I should vote to my heart's content or whether I should vote strategically.

danzig, Sunday, 15 April 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Just googling it, it seems Bay of Figs is an album, and it was nominated as such. For consistency's sake I'll send "Fizheuer Zieheuer" to albums too.

musically, Sunday, 15 April 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

Bay of Figs is an album if it's on the album list. it's a single too though (ie the title track... off the album). fizheuer zieheur is a SINGLE.

resolved, Sunday, 15 April 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

I looked up Fizheuer Zieheur and it is called a single by most places, with much more consensus than 45.33. I'll leave it as a single then unless someone convinces me otherwise...

musically, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

I hope people haven't forgotten about this

still in acquisition mode. remotely queued like a motherfucker.

tremendoid, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still making my list. 20 singles is really tough to narrow down...

I agree with you Musically, "Fizheuer Zieheuer" is a single. It's definitely one general idea, just expanded upon for a really long time, where as 45:33 is definitely broken into different movements. If you read interviews with James Murphy he even talks about working on it similarly to how he would work on an album.

sovietpanda, Monday, 16 April 2007 08:39 (eighteen years ago)

Insisting that 45.33 is an album makes you look stupid and square.

Alba, Monday, 16 April 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

<i>still in acquisition mode. remotely queued like a motherfucker.</i>

Ya, I assume most people are like this and I'll get a ton of ballots on the 21st.

musically, Monday, 16 April 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

And don't be shy about picking some most hated tracks either...

musically, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm running out of bumping excuses. Oh, sticky topics, how I pine for thee.

musically, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 07:10 (eighteen years ago)

How the fuck did I not nominate "So Sick"? Me, WTF?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 08:41 (eighteen years ago)

I've received a few more ballots...only a few more days left!

musically, Thursday, 19 April 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

Ballots due on Saturday, so hopefully yours are getting close to finishing...

musically, Thursday, 19 April 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

still sorting mine it out.

musically, suggestion: maybe put a final reminder thread on ILE?

djmartian, Thursday, 19 April 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'll definitely do that soon.

musically, Thursday, 19 April 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

I am listening to the tracks I nominated, and I was wondering about some of them, but they are all really good! Except maybe "Tiburon," but I liked the idea of including one token highly formulaic reggaeton track. Anyway, ballot submitted.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 April 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

Got a ton of ballots today, so I think we're set for a decent results list. Just to hint at things, there are definitely some strong contenders (some obvious, some not...to me) but nothing has run away yet. Things are still very up for grabs.

musically, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

Oh great. Another list with TV on the Radio, The Hold Steady and Joanna Newsom in the top spots. Fuck.

voted

Bee OK, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

Will there be a list for worst songs/albums?

Tape Store, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

and none of those on Shinefield list made it.

Bee OK, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

Bee Ok: None of the ones I was stumping for made it, or none of the three I just mentioned made it? (Former: Boo. Latter: Yay!)

Mordechai Shinefield, Friday, 20 April 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

Tape Store, for some reason not as many people picked worst songs/albums as I expected. At this point there are enough votes to pick one of each, maybe. But I do expect a lot more ballots to come in during the next couple of days so maybe I can pick 2-3 from each, which is what I would prefer to do anyway.

musically, Friday, 20 April 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

bump

Billy Dods, Friday, 20 April 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think joanna is gonna fare as well on ilm as she has elsewhere

just a thought

stephen, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

as for the hold steady...totally worthy of top 10 placement

stephen, Friday, 20 April 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'd have to bump this mofo every five minutes to compete with all the other (inferior!) poll threads. sigh sigh sigh

musically, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

At this rate it will be the only thread in black type!

Spencer Chow, Friday, 20 April 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

"Oh great. Another list with TV on the Radio, The Hold Steady and Joanna Newsom in the top spots. Fuck."

Hold out hope for Paris Hilton, Mordechai! Lex and I both voted, at least.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 21 April 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

A little update...there's now a fairly strong first place album, but only a few points separating the rest of the top 5. Not as many points separating the lower ranks, so a high vote for an album could easily secure it a place on the list. I'll have an update on tracks soon.

musically, Saturday, 21 April 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of these types of threads, does anybody have the 1980s Tracks Results thread link? Also, what's the official word on the Albums Results? I mean, it's beyond late at this point but was there ever a reason given?

Cunga, Saturday, 21 April 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

80s tracks poll...no idea why the albums poll never happened.

musically, Saturday, 21 April 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

musically, Saturday, 21 April 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

Last day for voting...keep them coming, and consider writing some blurbs if you're so inclined.

musically, Saturday, 21 April 2007 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

oh shit i was gonna vote - no time now as am going out oh no! but i will be able to get one in tomorrow...

lex pretend, Saturday, 21 April 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not going to be too strict with the deadline, but please get it in as soon as possible. I'd like to finish up calculating the results in the next few days so I can give people enough time to write blurbs.

musically, Saturday, 21 April 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

I have blurb fever.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 22 April 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, voting is closed, thanks to everyone who nominated and voted! I will be in touch with some of you shortly. I hope to start posting the results in a week or so.

musically, Sunday, 22 April 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I should mention that I wouldn't mind doing some blurbing.

The Reverend, Monday, 23 April 2007 09:13 (eighteen years ago)

How many ballots did you receive?

Spencer Chow, Monday, 23 April 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

About 50 or so...fewer than the 2005 poll but I suppose that's what happens when you do it in April.

Due to an unfortunate incident yesterday involving my laptop and some coffee I had to put off sending out the blurb notifications, but if you expressed interest in writing blurbs for things that placed (which is something I still have to officially calculate, etc) I will definitely be getting in touch.

musically, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

Sent out blurb requests today...if all goes as planned I'll start the results post on Monday.

musically, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 07:25 (eighteen years ago)

It's Monday! What happened?

Mordechai Shinefield, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

I promise not to pull an 80s poll...just couldn't get around to it today. I'll try to post the first batch tomorrow.

musically, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 06:42 (eighteen years ago)

I feel terrible that of the whole album list I have only heard 2 albums from last year (Scritti, and Home Video). I am so out of the damn loop.

Trayce, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 06:43 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Was the results thread deleted or something? I can't find it anywhere!
