Sly Stone - Collection box set

I could have sworn there was a thread on this but I can't find it for the life of me. Anyway, anyone heard this yet...it's finally coming out on Tuesday? I'm interested in whether any of the bonus tracks are worth listening to and if the sound has been improved. I'm also wondering whether each album is going to have it's own case - I hate those box sets that put each disc in a shitty piece of cardboard so you scratch the fuck out of your CDs every time you go to listen to them (I'm looking at you, Hanoi Rocks...)

use ILX Direct Search, not Google.

I have the box. Each album is being reissued separately, in a digipak with a nice booklet with brand-new liner notes by writers like Greg Tate, Barney Hoskyns, etc. The box puts all those digipaks into a nice white-and-purple slipcase, but there's no extra boxed-set-only booklet or anything like that. And yeah, the bonus tracks are worth hearing. Some of 'em are mono versions of the singles, but others are previously unreleased and occasionally killer.

unperson, Sunday, 8 April 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Do the There's a Riot Goin' On tracks still sound shitty?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 9 April 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

I see that all of the individual albums will be budget priced. nice.

abanana, Monday, 9 April 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone know the release date now? I thought it was this week, but Amazon is now showing the 24th.

jam, Monday, 9 April 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Best Buy's website says tomorrow. They've also sold out of whatever amount of the boxes they were selling through the site @ $39.99. They should be in the Best Buy B & Ms tomorrow for $49.99 which includes a bonus DVD.

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

what's on the DVD?!?

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

since I own 99% of this stuff already I'm not inclined to go out and buy it but a DVD packed with goodies might convince me

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

I actually have no idea. They don't mention it on the website, and all they said in the newspaper ad was "Free Bonus DVD."

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 9 April 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

Probably old Dick Cavett footage, maybe Woodstock, maybe that Angelo-Moore-back-from-the-dead Grammy footage.

unperson, Monday, 9 April 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

Just as long as it's not some "Best Buy Buzz Band Spring Sampler".

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 9 April 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

If anyone actually picks this up today let me know so we can figure out the differences in release date.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

I picked the box up at Best Buy this morning. Had to ask for it because they hadn't actually put the price tags on 'em yet. The DVD has two "never-before-seen" videos-"M'Lady" & "Everybody Is A Star". Haven't watched it yet.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, watched the DVD. Up front there is a disclaimer about the image quality of content, which was found in the vault and has not been previously issued. What we get are two faux-promo films for the songs. The root footage and audio stems from a live studio thing from '69-'70. Flaws in the footage have been covered by still images and groovy retro Op-Art. Audio's pretty nice. "EIAS" is a looser take than the single. Sly appears to be feeling no pain.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Official release date is now April 24, I believe, but that's good news if the box hit Best Buy already...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

The box came out two weeks before the individual discs will. These discs are also Serial Numbered on the back covers.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Cool, it's out here next Monday... I think I will want to get this.

Keith, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

how much is this box set going for...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

oh $40 nevermind

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

I paid $49.99. List is $69.99

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Think yourself lucky; it's £44 on Treasure Island.

Keith, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm....these are remastered, right? I mean that honestly...they were remastered releases, correct? Because I compared the three I already had back-to-back to the new releases and they sound EXACTLY the same to my ears. The bass on the new ones might be ever-so-slightly louder, but I can't realy tell for sure.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say, the production on There's a Riot Going On was always one of the things that attracted me to it. I like the fact that it sounds as though there's a pillow in front of the speakers.

Keith, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Just based on the advance (don't have final discs), the Riot remaster sounds very good and remains faithful to the muddiness of the original. It's clearer, but most of what it clarifies is still pretty dense, if that makes sense.

Matos W.K., Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

Cool... Well, in the sense that you obviously follow what I mean and still think it's cool. I look forward to hearing it.

Keith, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

I bought a couple of the individual ones yesterday (actually I exchanged them for PREFAB SPROUT 25th ANNIVERSARY BLAH BLAH) but I haven't listened to them yet. The packaging is very nice though. I did not notice a number, but it does say LIMITED EDITION. One of the extra tracks is called "My Monkey Butler is a Gorilla" which is promising. I hope Riot has extra surround sound muffling, like actually having the pillow wrapped around your head.

PJ Miller, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 07:15 (eighteen years ago)

I spotted the 'My Butler is a Gorilla' track in the shop and it was pretty hard not to just buy it there and then.

Keith, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

JUST GOT THE FRESH REMASTER... OMG THANK FUCKING GOD THEY REMASTERED THIS.

chaki, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

Matos OTM, and Chaki OTM too

jaybabcock, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

I can't decide if I should get the box or not. I'm kinda annoyed about re-purchasing things.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

box is worth getting, there's so much good stuff here, put together with real care & love: "fresh" properly mastered, the "riot" remaster, pretty great bonus tracks on each disk, photos i'd never seen before, some good liners, good design, etc. Sell back yr old sly cds at the same time and you end up well ahead for just a few bucks.

jaybabcock, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

eh maybe - most of my Sly is on vinyl

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

(cuz the old CDs sucked so bad!)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

god this is so good.

chaki, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

i was (very very) lucky enough to get these right before xmas and i am still listening to them four months later... it's been a long wait for we sly fans but the gates are finally opening...

jaybabcock, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

I've been waiting for the Riot remaster since the spring of 94 when I got that awful cd for the first time. Yesterday i got the box. it's a good day here.

Billy Pilgrim, Friday, 13 April 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

funny: the liner notes for both fresh and small talk call them "the last great sly album."

Billy Pilgrim, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

FITE

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

How does this compare, SQ-wise, with the 2-disc Essential comp?

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

the last great Sly album is actually Back On the Right Track!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

JUST GOT THE FRESH REMASTER... OMG THANK FUCKING GOD THEY REMASTERED THIS.

-- chaki, Thursday, April 12, 2007 10:08 PM (Yesterday)

i've grown up on the weird, deadened 'other' version, completely different takes/mixes, that got erroneously released in europe on CD. so so so much better.

stevie, Friday, 13 April 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

What blows my mind is they've ommitted Everybody is a Star, Hot Fun in the Summertime and Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)-- I mean WTF. When I heard that I decided to pass.

David K., Friday, 13 April 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

well, those are singles. but I guess they would've made sense as bonus tracks.

its this kind of thing that made me end up getting all of Sly's stuff on vinyl (only thing I'm missing now are the unreleased tracks from this box set and one of the Stone Flower 45s - which has never been reissued on CD anyway)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think they did what they did with the singles because they were banking on everyone who would buy the new discs would already have bought the Essential set, which had the songs. Not a good decision on Sony's part.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

christ that Joe Hicks Stone Flower 45 is going for $35.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

(erm, the one I'm missing that is)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

I still hold that Fresh sounds the same as the old CD.

Reatards Unite, Friday, 13 April 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

So I've bought the box set and am absolutely falling head over heels for all this stuff I've never heard before. Prior to this I've only had a couple battered pices of vinyl. What should I buy to grab those three singles that were omitted? Are they reissuing the hits set?

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

No complaints about the music on the (as-yet unpurchased) box, obv. Everybody reading this thead knows its greatness. But jesus x. christ, how the fuck could Sony omit those three tracks?! One of which was a #1 single for chrissakes. Mindboggling. They just don't get it, do they?

I swear, man - one of these days, pissed-off listeners are going to rise up and find an alternate means of acquiring music, one that'll cut the labels out of the equation entirely. It's just a matter of time.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard that the old hits album will be reissued, but it's still probably up in the air. Used copies of the Essential comp can be had for not too much though. Those songs (plus "I Get High On You") are on it.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

Am I the only one who doesn't hear any "remastering" anywhere on this set? All the way back to Dance To The Music, these tracks sound pretty much exactly the same as the CDs I already owned. Strangely enough, some sound even LESS crisp than before. I'm playing them back-to-back, and the mix on "Stand" actually feels a little muzzled. Did Epic just slap a new cover on existing prints, or am I crazy? (And when the heck will they officially release the excellent alternate version of Fresh?)

S-Scotch, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

five years pass...

Has there ever been any explanation from anyone at Sony as to why they left those singles off the box? Or any apology? 'cause that's just retarded.

FunkyTonk, Thursday, 20 December 2012 00:03 (twelve years ago)

of course not

If I was a carpenter, and you were a douchebag (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 20 December 2012 00:24 (twelve years ago)

I don't know about of course- they've admitted that the original price of the Genius Of Miles Davis box was unreasonably high.
