Metalheadz: probably the best record label ever - the whole aesthetic and self made mythology, the relentless sonic warfare, the way almost every artist who has recorded for them has raised their game spectacularly... ...I have loved following their evry step for the last 13 years (sniffle)

It's no coincidence that this current period in DnB, which must be its most fertile ever, is at a time when Goldie has returned to the fray after excursions in shite gangster films and various celebrity shenanigans - the guy's stil a proper musician and a dervish of creative energy, inspiring those around him.

DnB 5 Dubstep 0.

listening now. will be interesting to compare it to his EM from late '96 which i have and still adore.

first impression of difference = everything really does sound more compressed, fluid and often 'blunted' now - tho not necessarily denser. almost seems as if there's more focus on high-frequency sonics and effects rather than the bass also. i can't really hear the bass v well as it is altho i'm only listening thru average headphones on the PC.

blueski, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

lol, liquid d'n'b.

jim, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

SO TRUE.

jim, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks, looking forward to listening to this tonight!

Jordan, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, it's nice to hear some actual sub bass in DnB again. Forward to the mix at 29:20, now I remember what I loved about drum and bass. Commix is coming correct.

Belisarius, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

the Commix track reminds me of London Elec., but that's cool.

blueski, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

I'm talking about "Strictly" not "Be True." That stuttering b-line...womp wompwompwomp.

Belisarius, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Commix utterly rule!!

Iain Macdonald, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

"will be interesting to compare it to his EM from late '96 which i have and still adore."

the new mix is nowhere near as good as the EM mix from '96. I would kill to download that '96 mix. Lost my cassette of it about 7 years ago. It was my favourite drum'n'bass mix ever. Can anyone help with an upload. I'd be very grateful.

bass, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

i think i have a copy ... i'll check. i know for sure i have the photek and guy called gerald EMs, those are the shit.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

energy flash gordon, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 09:27 (eighteen years ago)

HOLD TIGHT CRU

Belisarius, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

having trouble locating my copy. problem is that i split it up into smaller chunks ages ago PLUS it's recorded from a D120 cassette and THEN encoded to only 128kbps, maybe only 64 mono even. anyway, have to find the bastard first, can't believe i deleted it off my main PC!

blueski, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 12 April 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

if you want the 96 in essential mix in 10 chunks (minus the sequence where he just drops a large chunk of the 'Timeless' suite) just go here

blueski, Thursday, 12 April 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

whoa, i didn't think i'd ever hear these essential mixes again!

After hearing Goldie's EM and the also pretty great INCredible sound mixes it was shocking how terrible goldie.co.uk and the D&B arena classics mixes were. I mean, it's a CD, if you trainwreck or the beat slips just go back and re-record it.

Also: Goldie's productions has always leaned heavily on guys like Rob Playford and the Quinn brothers Matrix and Optical.

That said, Metalheadz is a label without peer. You could argue Moving Shadow I suppose but let's be honest. METH001-050 (as well as the MDZ comps) were just devestating.

The Macallan 18 Year, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

quality is 128 but pretty good for a tape rip. (xpost)

blueski, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

This dude Heist and Tech Itch did the engineering on his new album.

Belisarius, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

still need to know what the last track on the '96 mix is (it's never mentioned after the Blame track on the ropey tracklistings you see on EM listing sites). pretty sure it's old Reinforced but that's it.

blueski, Thursday, 12 April 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

whatever this song is from the AGCG mix that samples Sade is great

deej, Thursday, 12 April 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

that's Dillinja's 'Promise' - available on the Platinum Breakz 2 comp

blueski, Thursday, 12 April 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

oh sorry wrong mix!

blueski, Thursday, 12 April 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

but then again how many dnb tracks were sampling Sade in '97 anyway?

blueski, Thursday, 12 April 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Still have this mix in frequent rotation. Aside from a couple near-trainwrecks, it's an outstanding selection of tunes.

So somebody went ahead and uploaded archives of many of the essential mixes from the 1990s. I'm still sorting through but jumped straight to the FSOL mix. Any suggestions?

Is linking to blog posts frowned upon? I'm not sure of the proper etiquette as far as that goes.

viborg, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

Doh. I was referring to the '96 mix, not the newer one.

viborg, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

why would linking to blog posts be frowned upon?

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

:(
