TS: "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" vs "Johnny and Mary"

The great thing about pop music is that sometimes it can give us an insight into the lives of people we don't know.

Billy Joel makes the great point of "Why do white immigrants have to work so hard, surely they can live off their royalty cheques like I do?", but Robert Palmer always makes me think of what car adverts used to be like in the olden days.

Dunno about the lyrics, but these are both great songs, and among the best that the respective acts have made. I think I'll pick "Johnny & Mary" for the use of synths.

We're assuming that Joel and Palmer are, in effect, people.

This is a fair point. Although Joel is more objectionable, I always found it harder to view Palmer as a three-dimensional human.

I was just thinking about "Movin' Out" the other day when someone suggested "You May Be Right" on the thread about songs that start off with a vehicle's engine. Of course, "Movin' Out" doesn't qualify either since its engine sound doesn't occur until the song is almost over.

I don't know how anyone can't love a song that rhymes "bartender" with "medical center". You oughta know by now.

"Johnny and Mary" is okay. It does its thing. But you'll have to put me down for one of the best cold-opens in seventies-albums history.

"Johnny and Mary," btw: Palmer's best song.

I suppose Anthony, Mary and Johnny are too.

You know, Anthony is this guy who works in the grocery store and is saving his pennies for someday. He also has an awful stutter btw.
