Looks pretty good, but I'm open to recommendations on what else from the early years to check out. Outside of some of the DM stuff I really don't own albums from a lot of these artists..

looks great...the Robert Rental single is a fave, as is some of that solo Robert Gorl stuff.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

which Robert Rental track are you referring to, Dan?

Cameron Octigan, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

'double heart' probably. it rules. mute have been threatening to repress all the early vinyl for years. i wish they would so i could replace some of my worn out copies.

stirmonster, Thursday, 12 April 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

Dunno, the early stuff is easy for reference, but this looks like every single Mute single from the start until 1984, with their respective b-sides, and that is getting a bit over the top for me really.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 12 April 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

is important for reference, I mean

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 12 April 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

The only one that interests me is Volume I, which is awesomeness. Volume II does have 'Fred Vom Jupiter' by Die Doraus & Die Marinas, though, which has been a favourite for some time.

I must also confess that I know nothing of Robert Gorl, and very little of Frank Tovey, but most of the mid-late stuff that isn't Nick Cave I don't like, so I'm not holding out much hope for that.

emil.y, Thursday, 12 April 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

emil.y, dude ...

Fad Gadget & DAF are the shit! as are Neubauten, Boyd Rice, and Bruce Gilbert!

Cameron Octigan, Thursday, 12 April 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

I thought DAF were on Volume I? I do love them. I like the Fad Gadget I know, but I thought that was early, so Vol I covers it. Neubauten and Rice never moved me, and I don't know about Gilbert.

Convince me!

emil.y, Thursday, 12 April 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

(In fact, I just checked - both DAF & Boyd Rice are on Volume I, but CD 2.)

emil.y, Thursday, 12 April 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

Gorl's Darling Don't Leave Me, with backing vox by Annie Lennox, is a stellar new wave dance track. Both sides of the Robert Rental single are great and I actually prefer it to his earlier self-released single, Paralysis/ACC.

dan selzer, Thursday, 12 April 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa. On the one hand, this is overkill, but on the other, WANT. NEED. Hopefully this will see US release as importing box sets is always unpleasantly expensive...

Telephone thing, Thursday, 12 April 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

Too much Depeche (esp considering I already I already have their single box) and I'm not sure how well this plays, but otherwise - wow

baaderonixx, Thursday, 12 April 2007 08:06 (eighteen years ago)

I love Back To Nature by Fad Gadget. Their Best Of comp is a good place to start, I think it's got all their A&B sides on it?

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 12 April 2007 08:32 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

this is insane - 10 cds for 39.99! did anyone pick this up yet?

creme1, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

I got the first two volumes (4 cds) for £10

Mark G, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone seen a shop in the US that'll do mailorder that has this for less than $100?

Telephone thing, Sunday, 17 June 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

god. i'm gonna have to get this. but so ... many ... discs ...

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 17 June 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

I'm really tempted by this, too, but I've got most of the Depeche Mode, Frank Tovey, Birthday Party and the two Normal tracks, do I still need it when Yazoo isn't really my cup of tea anymore?

As for the best deal, Action Records seems to have a good price for us Yanks, dunno how much the shipping will be.

Mr. Odd, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

Check out Mute Online shop, you can get signed copies for no extra cost.

Mark G, Sunday, 17 June 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

UK ilx0rs may be interested to know itunes UK are selling the whole box set (10 discs, 130 songs, etc) digitally for 7.99 pounds.

Telephone thing, Friday, 6 July 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

i shouldn't tell mrs fiendish about that. she bought me the box for my birthday :/

(although, having just looked on iTunes, i cannae find it. so hey.)

ANYWAY. my god, this thing FUCKING RULES. i went through a brief early-mute phase back in the very early 1990s, when i was 16, but it was pretty much limited to DM and yazoo. i wouldn't have known to make of non and so on back then ... hell, even fad gadget was too weird and freaky for me.

but now this all makes such perfect sense ... the whole of the 1982 disc in particular is incredible. and that early fad gadget stuff is absolutely fucking mindblowing: "fireside favourite" is jaw-dropping. i have a copy of his first album on tape somewhere, unlistened-to in 15 years. i am a fucking knob.

anyway. i'm about halfway through the whole box at the moment, and in raptures. possibly grimly album of the year, this.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

I got this over a month ago...and I still haven't made it past the first CD.

I must get back to listening to it - but it's quite heavy going to digest it.

Bob Six, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

you think? i'm finding it surprisingly easy -- i've listened to nothing else since sunday afternoon. no, really.

i'm fully aware i might at some point start choking on all the wires, but for now: naah. keep bringing it on.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think listening to most of my music on pc via itunes has had a detrimental effect on my attention span.

I very rarely make it through a complete album these days. no, really

Bob Six, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

> this is insane - 10 cds for 39.99! did anyone pick this up yet?

recently reduced to £18 on amazon... "only 1 left" - i had the last but one 8)

(the mp3s are selling for £34...)

koogs, Friday, 2 July 2010 08:52 (fifteen years ago)

Awesome. I guess I got the last one, but there are still more available at that price from other sellers.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 July 2010 09:27 (fifteen years ago)

twelve years pass...

This was probably obvious for any one who owned U.S. copies of Mute albums (which would have Sire's logo somewhere) but Mute Records posted this quote from Daniel Miller in remembrance of Seymour Stein:

He was a huge supporter of Mute and our artists in America. He released my first single, Depeche Mode, Erasure, and Fad Gadget and was always a great mouthpiece for British music when nobody else in America was interested. I will miss him greatly. Thank you, Seymour, for everything you did for us, for me and for music in general.

I'm pretty green about the music business, but I imagine a good U.S. distributor for a U.K. indie is pretty much a godsend, one that can really make the difference between feast or famine?
