Love him, but feel no love for Hit The Plane Down. Never have.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 12 April 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

hit the plane down infuriates me the most. with western homes a close second. i don't know if they're the worst, but they're both the worst on great fucking albums.

ghost rider, Thursday, 12 April 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know if they're the worst, but they're both the worst on great fucking albums.

true this. I don't even really so much hate "Western Homes" as much as I hate it's placement.

will, Thursday, 12 April 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

haha wvs i love "western homes" and its placement!

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 12 April 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

"mussel rock (is a horse in transition)" (which is not listed above) is my favorite SS song, probably the only one besides "kennel district" that I can listen all the way through.

"hit the plane down" only gets good when malkmus starts doing his shaun ryder impression.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 12 April 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

Gah.

"Western Homes" works perfectly in its spot position on WZ. It's like the mint you pick up at the register on your way out to the parking lot.

And "Hit the Plane Down" always marked a good spot to roll down the window and have a cigarette during long roadtrips.

I'm not the fondest of "Whalebones", but sheesh. I've never understood the anti-spiralism that exists out there.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, I agree with the placement of Western Homes, it's perfect, especially after all that awesome Half a Canyon razzamatazz. Shit, I forgot mussel rock. I kind of like that one.

Mr. Que, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I like most of these except "Passat Dream." Even "Hit the Plane Down" has a certain stupid charm, although it shouldn't have been on the album.

Brent, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

he's so goddamn bland! like a computer programmed to spit out "generic 90s indie rock"

i like the way his guitar sounds, and how he plays it, i guess.

ghost rider, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

I liked a three or four off that first PSOI outing a lot.

It's just a bit disconcerting to follow up that Half a Canyon madness with Western Homes. For me.

that very well may have been what they were going for...

will, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

* a palate cleanser
* the pickled ginger after the awesome sushi roll
* the lemon sherbet after the chocolate thunderstorm of A-1 awesome jam tune

Mr. Que, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

also "Two States" is pretty awesome, but I went with Kennel District.

will, Thursday, 12 April 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Kennel District and Date With Ikea are two of my favorite Pavement songs - not just Spiral Stairs songs, Pavement as a whole.

Hit The Plane Down and Western Homes are my two least favorite Pavement songs.

joygoat, Thursday, 12 April 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

he's dropped the stupid band name and is releasing an album under his pseudonym. the mp3 is not bad!

"Went with 'kennel district'" - must've thought I was voting for best? But apparently didn't vote anyway.

seven years pass...

Who'd have thunk that one of the best rock albums of 2017 would be by this guy? What the shit happened?

Shat Parp (dog latin), Friday, 12 May 2017 13:30 (eight years ago)

Hmmm... I watched a video all the way thru, the subject matter being Scott at a laundromat interacting with some ķinda tough-guy guy, and the song I found only mildly interesting, very much of the quality I expected from the first PSOI record which I never heard. I remember that what the song lacked in melody, it made up wits a charming, spare, idiosyncratic instrumentation.

rip van wanko, Friday, 12 May 2017 13:44 (eight years ago)

Hold on, people actually think Date with Ikea's the worst one here? That's one of pavements best songs

josh az (2011nostalgia), Friday, 12 May 2017 19:46 (eight years ago)

Yeah, "Doris and the Daggers" is really good!

geoffreyess, Friday, 12 May 2017 19:59 (eight years ago)

Two States is the most ludicrous and painfully obvious Fall rip ever put to tape. At least that I've heard. He should be ashamed of himself. It's one thing to let your influences show through, but that thing is truly next level. In the worst sense. No wonder MES hates them. Though really that's not so hard to do and they've plenty of company. Still...

VyrnaKnowlIsAHeadbanger, Friday, 12 May 2017 20:02 (eight years ago)

date w ikea is good!

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Friday, 12 May 2017 20:14 (eight years ago)

yeah Date W/ Ikea with 3 votes here is the new worst thing on ILM

(i would've voted for Your Time To Change)

alpine static, Saturday, 13 May 2017 00:31 (eight years ago)

"Fame Throwa" and "Conduit for Sale" are huge Fall ripoffs too!

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 13 May 2017 00:38 (eight years ago)

yeah Date W/ Ikea with 3 votes here is the new worst thing on ILM

This times infinity. Those responsible should come forward to be fp'd properly. Huge song.

On Some Faraday Beach (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 13 May 2017 00:52 (eight years ago)

Hmm tbh I can't even remember how any of these songs go apart from Kennel District and Date W/ Ikea which I do like. I guess I don't like Spiral Stairs' songs much.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 13 May 2017 01:00 (eight years ago)

"Date" is a highlight on Brighten for sure.

After like seven times of suffering through "Hit the Plane Down" (when I was too lazy to skip it), I started liking it in that bizarre Stockton Syndrome way that sometimes happens with songs. (Phone auto corrected Stockholm, but seems appropriate to leave it)

Vinnie, Saturday, 13 May 2017 01:01 (eight years ago)

I've got a version of Plane taken from a scratched-up CD. Holds up pretty good!

pplains, Saturday, 13 May 2017 01:37 (eight years ago)

Hear it for yourself!

pplains, Saturday, 13 May 2017 01:42 (eight years ago)

"Stockton Syndrome" would be a great title for a Pavement bootleg

goodoldneon, Saturday, 13 May 2017 01:43 (eight years ago)

Yes Shrub you are correct. But Two States even mentions "the north" ala the early mes cliche and a woefully affected vocal approximation. I do like the intentionally ugly guitar solo though.

VyrnaKnowlIsAHeadbanger, Saturday, 13 May 2017 05:11 (eight years ago)

Sorry, Snrub. I meant. F-ing pad changed it on me.

VyrnaKnowlIsAHeadbanger, Saturday, 13 May 2017 05:13 (eight years ago)

Give me a moment to relish the irony of Kannberg autographing a copy of Terror Twilight (of all possible Pavement albums) and selling it with digital copies of his solo record on Pledge Music.

Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Saturday, 13 May 2017 19:46 (eight years ago)

echoing love for Date with Ikea, beautiful song. much needed break from Malkmus

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 13 May 2017 20:22 (eight years ago)
