why not just start a thread, this is worse than YSI spam.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

well sorry I only did three.

Polls ARE threads you know.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

why don't you create a poll about which poll is the worst

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

because polls are stupid, i just said that

as if the new ILX isn't eyebleedingly ugly enough without bright red [POLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!] all over the new answers page

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

OMG WHO IS THE SADISTIC FUCKER WHO IS MAKING YOU CLICK ON THOSE LINKS THAT SPECIFICALLY SAY NEW POLL?!?!?

NYCNative, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

no really this is pretty obnoxious

deej, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

the polls are fun .. it's good mindless stuff on a slow Friday at work

Stormy Davis, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

I think they should be on a separate board within the site, personally.

sleeve, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

i was going to suggest to keith that he change the red poll text to make it more subtle because i knew SOMEBODY would complain about their abundance.

blueski, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

as if the new ILX isn't eyebleedingly ugly enough

IT LOOKS THE SAME, WEIRDO

blueski, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

This is all very annoying. I agree with any comment amde above so long as it is negative.

I know, right?, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

It so does not look the same!

I know, right?, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

And it looked really horrible for a while.

I know, right?, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

Polls make more sense than some list threads, in that instead of having just a bunch of names listed throughout the thread, you actually get a "public opinion" result at the end.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

OK the gap between the two dashes is slightly wider than old ILX i know. there's just nothing we can do about it. i'm so sorry.

blueski, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

Hate the poll-starter, not the poll.

blueski, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

FUCK A RESULT

discussion forums are about DISCUSSION, not RESULTS, U MORANS

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

WE LIKE BOTH DISCUSSION AND RESULTS

blueski, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

I agree that a lot of the polls are really lame tho.

blueski, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

Poll threads also contain discussion.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

I apologize for nothing!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

Just because you don't like the poll subjects means the polls are crap but no one forces you to click them.
Most of the polls have had lots of replies and good discussions and aren't just those annoying list threads.

If a poll isn't on something you like. Then make your own!

the red [POLL closes: April 20][b/] really is annoying. it pushes the title of the thread off like 25 characters so your eye is constantly going left and right instead of just straight down scanning the first few words. terrible user experience. i've learned to completely ignore poll threads.

here's a brillian idea: put the [b][POLL closes: April 20]
after the name of the thread or just in the first post/question. no one really needs to know it's a poll before they click on the thread.

despite starting one, i hate the polls too. create an "I Love Polls" board or something, because it's not like ILM/ILE weren't poll-exhausted enough as is.

rps, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

YES PLEASE.

When I first logged on to ILM today the entire top half of New Answers was polls.

look, polling is great when you don't want nuance and an interesting comparison between several choices but unfortunately we are not electing the commander in chief of northern european melodic music

lfam, Friday, 13 April 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

There were several not particularly melodic acts in those polls. What they did have in common is they had either had some commercial success outside of their home country or some attention among (normal - not genre-specific) critics.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 13 April 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Good idea. I'll nominate Luke Haines.

Look -- people are going kind of nuts with the polls right now because it's new and fresh and fun in a different sort of way. Eventually the glossy sheen will wear off, and things will settle down. There will still be the occasional poll, but people will go back to arguing over semantics in their favorite genre of choice. So calm down. Either ignore them, or join in. It's fun!

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 14 April 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Poll to ban Jeff Treppel. all in say aye!

jaxon, Saturday, 14 April 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

"new and fresh and fun"

no.

elmo argonaut, Saturday, 14 April 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

Aye! Wait, what?

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 14 April 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

The problem with the poll results is that they attempt to resolve issues of taste that are meant to be disputed, bitterly, without end.

elmo argonaut, Saturday, 14 April 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

the problem with most of the recent polls is that they're really boring! blue oyster cult? led zeppelin? are we on fidonet circa 1989? who am i?

discography arguments in particular bore and frustrate me - everyone brings in their entire mass of preference, judgment, blind spots, desire, apprehension - all the things that make up what you think about music, all the things that are interesting - and then studiously bury them as far down as possible, pausing only to say "houses of the holy is very overlooked" then someone says "it's not overlooked, in fact it's over-rated!" and it all becomes about reputations, whether certain albums are "deserving" or not, like some old professor of russian literature who just goes on and on about turgenev getting too much respect in the 1910's but then his star falling a couple of decades later. that could be interesting if you're going to draw inferences about society and how values in culture shape opinions about music but that's not really happening on these poll threads.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 14 April 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

The problem with the poll results is that they attempt to resolve issues of taste that are meant to be disputed, bitterly, without end.

OTM. If you want to decide the best Beatles album (FFS, do you HAVE to), start a OPO thread, which might get some actual debate and discussion. Polls as implemented right now are an opporuntity to cast an anonymous vote which you don't have to justify, and which needn't be informed by previous debate. This makes them dumb and reductive. This is certainly why I skip them, and I guess why a lot of other people scroll right past them. We treat them as noise rather than signal.

I suspect people will get bored of starting them eventually and no code solution is needed, but honestly, stop fucking starting them.

caek, Saturday, 14 April 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

If you don't like them just ignore them. I don't see the need to tell everyone not to start them. If you're skipping them then it really shouldn't be annoying you.
If it's the fact that it comes up in red that's annoying people then that's not the poll starters fault. That can be changed easily I'm sure.

And yeah I think people will get bored. The poll function has been there a while now and this week is the 1st time it's been used so much. Things will settle down again.

Not everyone is going to like all the threads. Whether it's polls or not. If you don't like something skip it.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

You know, it's a lot more fun having one Now poll a week or every few days rather than three or four all started at once...

Matt DC, Monday, 20 August 2007 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah tbh it is getting beyond ridic at this point.

Trayce, Monday, 20 August 2007 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

(I am pro-Now polls incidentally but I'd rather have the back and forth of arguing over one in detail than spreading the same group of posters over four threads at once).

Matt DC, Monday, 20 August 2007 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, if they keep up at this rate, there won't be any more crappy corporate compilations or ass-backward "worst-of" lists to poll motherfuckers about.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 20 August 2007 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

i don't want to hide polls coz some of them are good, but fucksake geir stop spamming.

ILM has been taken over by polls. i like polls, so i don't want to turn off that preference. just asking if we can slow it down as there are way too many polls at the moment.

Bee OK, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

just checked out the 'hide polls' option. pretty good!

haitch, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

it'd be good if you could keep polls on ILE but hide them on ILX, the polls over there are usually better.

This is 2008, not 1908, keep up grandad!

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

i guess the only interesting thing about the regions polls is how you get one and then several people decide to start their own in response, as if it would never have occurred to anyone otherwise or happened any other way. just mad flurries rather than a spaced out but more consistent stream. happens with a lot of things on ILX tho, not just polls.

blueski, Friday, 1 February 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

You've got to have all the regional heats though before you move into the national finals. Followed by the champions league and world club championships. If I were you I'd get your bets in now for Tiger from Princes Risborough to go all the way.

NickB, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

I hope that when we eventually get to Best Of London we have the nous to do it by postcode.

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

never heard of London. is it near Wales?

Thomas, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)

I was thinking the best way to do London would be five polls: North, South, East, West, Home Counties. Really can't be arsed to do it myself though.

chap, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

I realise proposing five polls isn't really in the spirit of this thread.

NickB, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

re rateyourmusic: it would be kind of interesting if the only degree to which you could rate stuff was "i still like this record and understand why i bought it" vs "i no longer like this record and am not glad that i own a copy" -- the results would be more interesting than learning that, you know, more people like than dislike kind of blue
