When will y'all realize that Marissa Nadler is the nu-gothique schnizzle?

In a review I was reduced to describing her "Songs III: Bird on the Water: as "a fuller-voiced Hope Sandoval as Victorian brothel chanteuse reborn in the 70s as apprentice to doomed art-song folkie Judee Sill" but that leaves out the Deitrich aspects and scary Victorian sex/death/fairytale-animals lyrics thing.

Which, I firmly believe, isn't done nearly enough these days and never this well.

i, grey, Sunday, 15 April 2007 07:00 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds terrible. like "opening for dresden dolls after the free goth-clown facepainting" terrible.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 15 April 2007 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, certainly got my attention!

Soukesian, Sunday, 15 April 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

Quite a voice. If you can't get enough of those Victorian sex/death/fairytale-animals lyrics, Rasputina or Puerto Muerto may help.

Soukesian, Sunday, 15 April 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Marissa who?

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 15 April 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

there's only enough room in this world, etc.

wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 15 April 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

What happened to Veronica Lipgloss and the Evil Eyes? They was the nu-goth schinizzle.

bendy, Sunday, 15 April 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

That's all true about her sound, I'm still waiting for the songs to grab me. Actually, at this point they're all sounding the same.

Rich Smörgasbord, Sunday, 15 April 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

"Diamond Heart" and "Leather made Shoes" are actually pop songs in gloomy disguise.

She's not goth in the Hot Topic sense; she's not 'ethereal' because there's something authentically morbid in her eros thing, whatever she's doing isn't a pose.

i, grey, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

She's good. That said, and though I understand why she felt cheesed, I'm still a bit miffed that she was annoyed I had to skip her Terrastock 6 set (answer: because I was making goddamn sure I was front and center for Ghost).

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

i like Ballads of Living and Dying, but all her songs DO sound the same, especially on the second LP... definitely a case (for me) where one album is plenty.

resolved, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

I just know from the new CD and her pop-ness melody-wise and the Espers' guy's electro-noodling negate sameness.

i, grey, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

There's even one song that's in a major key!

Saying all her stuff sounds alike feels akin to saying all of Low's early stuff sounds alike. Well, duh--it's a voice and a fingerpicked guitar, so the sonics are limited, but the melodies, emotions and intents are vastly different--at least, and again, on the new CD.

i, grey, Sunday, 15 April 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

her first record is fucking great and i was trying to tell you all so in 2004. i didn't like the second one as much, and i haven't heard the new one. Ballads of Living & Dying, though, is the fucking jam.

I’ve seen her walking around twice since I moved here … she’s smokin’!

She’s also a musician of the highest caliber and a terrific songwriter.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 9 February 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

i picked that one up but i am not sure i've even listened to it yet. i'm worried, since her 2nd one disappointed me so much.

Feb. 2010:

I just finished up recording vocals for a full length Xasthur record. The LP will be released on Hydra Head records. More information coming soon on this exciting collaboration. I am currently working on a new full length record, with some touring coming up as well. A collaboration with James Blackshaw is also in the works.

not the exact same model, but similar to how gira financed the new swans record

mr. mandelbrot flythrough vertigo, esq. (Edward III), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

this is actually a great solution to the leak/download dilemma

you want a new album? money up front

mr. mandelbrot flythrough vertigo, esq. (Edward III), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

that said, I've never been a big fan of nadler, her material's a little too mannered, but maybe I've just heard the wrong things? when it comes to gothy freakfolk I'm more likely to reach for larkin grimm.

new self-titled is not nu-gothique schnizzle but rules nonetheless. very quiet music showcasing some of the loveliest singing i've ever heard

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 19 May 2011 14:04 (fourteen years ago)

is this out now? self-released, right?

akm, Thursday, 19 May 2011 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

don't think it's coming out till next month. got to hear it though through devious channels. this on vinyl would be divine. she sings like julianna barwick but with discernible lyrics and mellow folky melodies. my word

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 19 May 2011 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

all of her albums are very nice.

akm, Thursday, 19 May 2011 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

the only other one i've heard is bird on the water which yeah is awesome

I'll admit that I went into it expecting something quite different based on the title and Brodsky being present, so it took me the first half to realign with what they were doing, but I did come around about when "Estranged" came on.

Nadler’s mailing list has announced that the collaboration between Marissa Nadler and Stephen Brodsky, which produced the album Droneflower is now actually known as Droneflower, and Emily Lee has been added a member in order to create those two new songs. This all makes it sound like it is a proper band now, not just a one-off collaboration between Nadler and Brodsky. Strange then that the link posted by Ned still speaks of the Nadler and Brodsky "duo".

question for Marissa Nadler stans: has she recorded any other songs/albums in the same shoegazey/cocteausy vein as her incredible Sailors With Wax Wings feature? maybe Droneflower comes closest? I've been meaning to get into some of her other work since I first heard Ballads of Living and Dying in ≈2007, but she's made like 15 albums and idk how many guest appearances since then, so it's going to take some time
