pisces, Sunday, 15 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

i think 'Give It To Me' is pretty poor, 'The Way I Are' is a lot better as are 'Girlfriend' and 'The Sweet Escape'.

blueski, Sunday, 15 April 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

So battle of megahot producers ends with Timbaland on top of Ronson - both singles leave much to be desired. Their work is better when they're not claiming credit. Best single around is number 15 or 17.

danzig, Sunday, 15 April 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

There's something a bit distasteful about "Give It To Me"...the hottest producer + the hottest male singer + the hottest female singer = a mediocre song that will inevitably be #1 everywhere.

musically, Sunday, 15 April 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

well yeah that's true on paper but the hottest x + the hottest y frequently has negligible results. the whole is better than the parts here and that's rare i think.

pisces, Monday, 16 April 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

that's not happened for a while i'm saying.

...and it still hasn't.

everyone on 'give it to me' comes off as v smarmy and punchable, and i say this as someone who actually does like them all really. and the beat is dullzzzzzz.

lex pretend, Monday, 16 April 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

ok the last time it happened was 'maneater' or 'hung up'

lex pretend, Monday, 16 April 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)

i like "give it to me" better than any of the big justin or nelly f. hits from the last year. partly because it seems sort of tossed off.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 16 April 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

Surely not correct in this case. More like the worst.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:29 (eighteen years ago)

It was correct about a year ago when Orson topped though.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:29 (eighteen years ago)

You're not even trying anymore.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:31 (eighteen years ago)

At least there is a good song at number 10. Timbaland, Timberlake & co should listen to Kaiser Chiefs to learn what proper music sounds like.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

I briefly misread the above chart as "Alex Ferguson ft Crystal Waters" which would have been much more intriguing.

The "featuring" credit when applied to solo artists should be banned. It's as if Furtado and Timberlake are standing on Timbaland's nose, or something.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:40 (eighteen years ago)

'Destination Calabria' ?

what's this?

Marco Damiani, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

The latest dance hit...the horn sample is pretty catchy. The video is like 'Call on Me' set at band camp.

musically, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:50 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno, i had a smashing rum featuring coke on friday night

600, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

It's as if Furtado and Timberlake are standing on Timbaland's nose, or something.

But it is true. More like every Timbaland production ever should be credited to "Timbaland featuring...".

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:55 (eighteen years ago)

Also, interesting to note that almost a year ago this week, Morrissey was also denied the number 1 by a big bulgy black guy.

danzig, Monday, 16 April 2007 07:57 (eighteen years ago)

Musically wouldn't have mattered if said big bulgy black buy was Kele Okereke. It is music that counts, not skin colour.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 April 2007 08:08 (eighteen years ago)

Geir featuring Hongro (standing on his nose)

blueski, Monday, 16 April 2007 09:40 (eighteen years ago)

What is certain is it's about time Justin Timberlake got rid of Timbaland and replaced him with a proper producer such as Mitchell Froom, Nigel Godrich or Stephen Street.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard JT is on the next Radiohead album.

"Everyone who has had the misfortune to talk with people in the heart or on the edge of mental disorder, knows that their most sinister quality is a horrible clarity of detail; a connecting of one thing with another in a map more elaborate than a maze. If you argue with a madman, it is extremely probable that you will get the worst of it; for in many ways his mind moves all the quicker for not being delayed by the things that go with good judgment. He is not hampered by a sense of humour or by charity, or by the dumb certainties of experience. He is the more logical for losing certain sane affections. Indeed, the common phrase for insanity is in this respect a misleading one. The madman is not the man who has lost his reason. The madman is the man who has lost everything except his reason."
(Chesterton)

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Also clearly Girlfriend is the best song in that list by a country mile.

Matt DC, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

this is either fake Geir or the realest Geir alive

blueski, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

Also clearly Girlfriend is the best song in that list by a country mile

yeah agreed but 'glamorous' runs it close. 'beautiful liar' also very good and the emergence of the sun in recent days has made me warm to 'the sweet escape'...

lex pretend, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

woo-hoo! yee-hoo!

gwen is still annoying on it though.

lex pretend, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

avril should be commended for making the year's first pro-bullying video. bravo!

m the g, Monday, 16 April 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

PRO-BULLYING?!! links? details? etc?

pisces, Monday, 16 April 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the avril video is BRILLIANT.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ25-glGRzI

yeah! it's brilliant! glam avril and her clique of, like, rilly cool mates relentlessly and cruelly harass the dorky avril in glasses in myriad 'hilarious' ways in order to steal her fella. but it all turns out alright in the end, because dorky avril ends up in a tipped-over portaloo covered in human excrement. hurrah!

m the g, Monday, 16 April 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

i think it was supposed to be outcast/rebel girl vs. perfect prep girl. but they gave the prep glasses which makes it look like tuff/cool girl vs. shameful dork girl, which gives the whole thing a very mean-girls edge. but that's ok. she's a motherfucking princess.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 16 April 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

(Produced by Yorke/Godrich)

Trouble is, other than "OK Computer", Godrich is at his best when there are no Radiohead members around. He has done some excellent work with Beck, Jason Falkner and Paul McCartney.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

"Latest" is a bit of an exageration. This song's been around for ages, years even. It used to be called "Destination Unknown".

everything, Monday, 16 April 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

My grandfather was from Calabria. It breaks my heart that he died 30 years too early to see his manor immortalised by a pair of tits in a drummer girl outfit.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 16 April 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

A song can have been around for a while in the clubs but be a recent chart hit, which is the case of 'Destination Calabria'. Lots of dance hits tend to pick up steam in the clubs for a while before reaching the charts anyway.

Brian Potter and Andy Pipkin are two of Britain's most popular comedy characters.

This is why most of us just watch American import sitcoms.
